Hey there. I usually never used my headphone when I listened to music. Lately I regained interest, I wanted to listen to music around midnight and I live in a students home. As I liked the music being so close around me with the headphone I started to listen more and more with my headphone on.
After a while I rediscovered some prog-albums in my collection. I didn't like Larks Tongues that much, but with my headphone it felt like a totally new album to me! I hadn't heard some sound-effects that made the album much more mature and interesting. I had same experiences with other albums like Godbluf and live albums of Mahavishnu and other bands. Now my question for this forum is: do others have experiences with higher accessibility with certain albums/bands when listening through a headphone? |

every Gentle Giant album, Roxy Music's Avalon (pure magic), Crime Of the Century, Dark SIde of the Moon (one tip make shure to not to do anything that has to do with plates and things that can be shatered,, Time comes verry sudden and LOAD and you probably will jump and everything will go in thousend pieces), Foxtrot, Steely Dan - Aja and if you are a metal head then Mastodons - Crack the Skye will be satisfyeable |

There's so much going on, and only with headphones you can really appreciate that track which has one lady singing in English (was that the left ear?) and the other in French (the right?)  Seriously, I think albums like this one were recorded specifically for headphones!

I love my stereo system to death because it has a high enough sound quality for my tastes, but some albums just have to be listened to with headphones! Quieter albums like The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky for example, seem just like background music on a stereo, but on headphones they surround your head with an amazing atmoshpehere.
Another plus is of course the small sounds you only notice through headphones, like in alot of Devin Townsends 'wall of sound' style work, you can only make out some layers with headphones which make the album alot more fun  It also helps that my headphones have some serious bass that can blow your mind when post rock songs, for example, build up to massive endings (I don't think I would ever have loved GY!BE's work as much as I do if it weren't for my headphones)------------- 'Yeah, thats.. I remember the first time I heard the ending bit of Karn Evil 9 on headphones. The synth sound goes back and forth from ear to ear faster and faster and then seems to go out of the top of your head.

Pain of Salvations The Perfect Element is amazing on heaphones, Even after having the album for 3 1/2 years I was noticing new things on it when I got myself a excellent set of headphones last summer. I'll second Choirs of the Eye as well, another album thats fantastic to listen to on 'phones. ------------- Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

I've got a pair of very good headphones and when I really want to listen to music - I mean REALLY listen - I always use my headphones

Yes i think that the experience with headphones for any albums enchanced the music experience. I just don't use too much the headphones to protect my ears. But if you talk about specific albums, i can think of the excitement i had listening to the cd "Yes Songs" in my headphones many times. Wow!
