From this selection I choose The Lamb.

The Lamb from the list, but The Snow Goose is THE greatest concept album ever.

It's between Tales and The Lamb, both are masterpieces and are very individual pieces from each band. The former is Anderson's/Howe's album and the latter is Gabriel's.

I'll go for Tales since The Lamb will surely get more votes.

The Lamb

The Lamb is more dynamic than TOTO.

And The Lamb is more vintage prog sounding than The Wall.

So The Lamb for me.

I'm not much of a Genesis fan, and I find the Wall somewhat trying. TFTO is great all the way through, though. I don't understand why it gets so much hatred flung its way.

TTFO and The Lamb are generally unlistenable and a lot of what was wrong with the prog scene at the time. The Wall is pretty neat, though. So the four star release wins over the two two star releases. Smile

Broken Heart

Seriously, I'd go with Tales. It is indeed a very "prog" release, maybe even too prog and in this sense our friend here might not be as awfully wrong as it might seem the first time you read the aforequoted sentence LOL
Anyway, Tales might not be free of flaws but one cannot say it's not monumental.

It's not a concept. Unless I awfully misread the lyrics of Are You Ready Eddy? or Jeremy Bender...

For the music only: Tales
For the mix between music and concept (expressed by lyrics, performance, etc.): The Lamb
For the most powerful concept: The Wall

Three winners. I voted for Tales simply because it has the least votes.

"The Lamb Lies Down Broadway" is probably my favorite album of all time.  It's 94 minutes long, but I wouldn't change a note.  "Tales From Topographic Oceans" is also great, but it has too much filler for me to consider it a 5-star masterpiece.  "The Wall" has a nice concept and a few good songs, but there is way too much filler for me to compare with the other two.

ok... this is an easy one for me: Tales!!! I do like the Wall but I don't think it is Pink Floyd's best musically and isnothing compared to the other two... and I enjoy very much some parts of The Lamb but I still don't get the entire album....

When it comes to great concept albums I can only think of three that really are truly monumental:

1). The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
2). Be (Pain of Salvation)
3). God In Three Persons (The Residents)

This doesn't necessarily mean that they are matched by equally great compositions... with the exception of God In Three Persons LOL

The Lamb>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The Wall=TFTO

All of these are 4 star albums at least, but The Lamb (which is one of my all-time favorite albums) is significantly ahead of both of these.

1. Tales
2. Lamb
3. Wall

I notice that all the other suggestions of what should have been on this list (well, the one's I'm familiar with) are all single record/disk releases whereas the great monuments of the list are all double record releases.  I think double record is intrinsic to monumental here.  Geek

Snow Goose was Camel at its peak. It's hard to justify Tales, the Lamb, or the Wall being the best from Yes, Genesis or Pink Floyd.

I think The Lamb smokes the other two here for the quality of its songs, as well as being a rather more convincing concept album. Quadrophenia might just about pip it for my favourite obvious double concept album, with a nod to the subtler/shorter varieties... Still Life, Ys, Darwin!, Felona E Sorona, Au Dela Du Delire etc.

I'd say as a concept album, The Wall is the most effective of the three, though all three are very close in overall quality.  Topographic Oceans probably gets the most listens from me, as it has an intangible spiritual quality that I can't quite place (I don't bother deciphering the meaning of the lyrics), and the music itself is very lovely.  About 75% of Lamb is amazing music, but I never quite bought the concept - it's just too obtuse to really make much sense even after you read the story and the numerous analyses written about it online.

The Wall it is.  It kicked my butt when I was 10 years old, and it still spooks me out a bit.  It was my first R-rated movie and some of the images in that film left me with nightmares for weeks afterward.  Good sheet.

3 great and cherished albums in my collection.

I could not possibly be without any of them.

If pushed, I'll go for Tales, but it's close as they are all superb.

My favourite by far of those three albums is The Wall, both musically and concept-wise. I will freely admit to not liking The Lamb... at all, while Tales by and large leaves me somewhat cold (even if it's one of Micky's favourite albums of all time).

The question is simply Concept Album....I have to pick the Wall out of all 3. Although I agree with other points made about musicality and extreme amount of filler songs, double LP is a lot of music.
I also take points off due to the movie The Wall......wow just horridly done, added nothing to the album.

Tough choices...good poll.
Thanks

The Lamb by a long way. They're all flawed, but like the White album disc 1 of The Lamb is pretty close to perfect and disc 2 is patchy but still has plenty of great songs. TFTO has some wonderful passages of music but doesn't really hang together that well, and I've always found the Wall pretty mediocre with the exception of a few songs.

...from the (limited) list - I voted The Lamb...
but it trails some distance behind Subterranea (IQ) which is THE (modern) Monumental Prog Concept Album
- also honorable mention must go to Brave (Marillion)

Three masterpieces, but my vote goes to The Wall not only for the music but for the theatrically of the story. Also applies for the Lamb, but I think It's more powerfull the Pink Floyd one.

The Lamb... and Tales... are my winners. Not a big fan of The Wall (but great fan of Pink Floyd).

TFTO.

The Wall has about 3 good tracks and only one of those is great. The Lamb has a great first disc and a substandard second disc. TFTO has 3 mindblowingly good epics and one avant epic.

Lamb is the funniest, all the laughs Waters NOW says he wishes were on The Wall. (I thought that was what The Trial was for). Superb melodies all over Lamb. And finishes on one of Genesis' finest tunes.  (Which is saying alot.)

But.... only three? Why these three? No Brick? No Tommy, Quadrophenia, no APP, or TDSOTM. Not even that totally insignificant reject Close To The Edge?? (Kidding of course. one has to insert this bit.) Oh, that is only a semi concept piece with... B Sides. So, no 2112, Tarkus, Meddle, Foxtrot.

Or if we use our imagination, how about Cygnus? (Starts on one album, finishes on another.) Now that is amusing. The hidden concept album...

Can't vote, Tales vs Lamb? The Wall is a superb album as well. Something that is as determinedly uncommercial in intent (it needed Gilmour and Ezrin to make it palatable to the non prog crowd...)

^I agree there could've been more variety, although I find it more interesting with less options. Much tighter competition.

The poll is about "monumental" concept albums, which seems to apply only to double albums in the OP's view.
