I said "This is a good album but not certainly not my favorite". I don't really have a favorite album. It just depends on what I feel like listening to. So, I guess the last thing I listened to was my favorite album.

Favorite albums always change when you're a prog lover. If you are a normal music fan, you might be able to just sit back and say something like "Yeah, Led Zeppelin II is my favorite album." But for us proggers, favorite albums always change. So, it's pretty much an impossible question.
That being said, sure, you can have an overall favorite album, even if you don't listen to it much at the time. It could rise to the top of your listening list again sometime in the future, but it might be in the background now. Always possible.

My Favorite Album.......gotta be Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull followed closely by Close to the Edge (Yes) and Foxtrot (Genesis) and Brain Salad Surgery (ELP), throw Animals (PF) in too.

My favorite CD is every Dream Theater CD. They are all so good and perfect that it is not possible to pick one. It is unfair that this site only has 5 stars when these all deserve at least 6. My favorite song is every Dream Theater song. My favorite band is Dream Theater. I have 10 CDs and all of them are Dream Theater. There is no reason to listen to anything else because this is the best.

Doesn't matter how good an album is, after enough spins, you will become tired of it at some point. Same as with your favourite meal. That said, I would consider Buckethead - Population Override as a contender for the bringing-with-me-to-to-a-deserted-island picks.

Ah, you did ask why I don't like Yes. I don't like 'em because they're
pompous, they have a "fake classical" feel, are pretty arrogant and
pretentious, and the sound is cheesy, the vocals are pure crap, the
chorus is annoying, and many other reasons.

I think you should shut up. He should be allowed to think those albums suck. As a matter of fact I think they "suck" as well, with the exception of 'Thick', which is decent. There is more to prog rock than Yes, Genesis, Elp, Dream, Theater and The Mars Volta. Why didn't you suggest that he listens to Secret Oyster/Amon Düül? Because if you presume in generalities, you are bound to hit bullseye at some point, that is, if you continue flaming recklessly.
Ever thought about this: Perhaps lack of appreciation for 'Close to the Edge' is a matter of taste, and not a dislike for prog in general.
It is legal to not agree with the majority.

As far as classic prog, Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. As far
as modern prog/prog metal, Opeth - Blackwater Park. As far as
music in general, Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible.

The album that made you look into new areas of musical expression, in this case prog rock, is the best album you've ever known. In my case, it coul be "Trace" from the same name band, or Los Jaivas' "alturas de macchu picchu", or the ultimate I bought of The Tangent. But just don't attack the popular Yes & Genesis.

When I first listened to "Selling England by the Pound", I thought "it`s a good album, but I still prefer "A Trick of the Tail"". This happened in 1981.
P.S. When the threads of this Forum are filled with very big scans of album covers, it`s very boring for me to wait for my PC to load them. Anyway, I know this is going to happen again... Who`s next?

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Close to the Edge, but I admit, it is a
very good album, just not what I want to listen to a lot.
It's so hard to pick just one album, so here are my top choices:
Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets
Yes - Relayer
Rick Wakeman - The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table
Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III
The Who - Quadrophenia
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
King Crimson - Red

This must be the most terrible thread ever. People are saying SILLY THINGS here (I believe I even read that "all avant-garde sucks" "Can you believe that, Maggie?" "No John, I can't.")
I think having ONE FAVOURITE ALBUM is impossible, if you are a true music lover.
And YOU KNOW WHAT? I am not telling you what my favourite music is!
Probably no one even cares, because most people here only seem to be interested in talking about the same stuff over and over and over (and over) again. Here's a word of advice:
EXPLORE!
(You could start with John Cage, or Faust, or Edgard Varèse, or Smegma, or John Coltrane, maybe Magma, John Zorn anyone?)
(or you could play Brain Salad Surgery or Close To The Edge for the thousandth time.
Either way, have fun!)

your pissing people off cause basically your writing off some of the best prog albums (by consensus) as crap. You don't just say I don't like them or they arent the best, you say they suck. Who are you to say your prog is better when 90% of this site loves Genesis and Yes. |
What's wrong with saying they suck? Soon as Dream Theater get a lot of hassle on here... Surely he can voice his opinion if he thinks these bands suck.

As for my favourite... definately any Dream Theater album. I'll say "Images And Words" because it got me into Dream Theater and Prog Music, but in general I love them all.
