that is really hard to come up with a list...much less pick ONE...

some of the ones to come directly to mind

Osanna - Animale senza respiro ...lost in a coin flip with Oro Caldo
Battiato - Sequenze e Frequenze...   lost in a coin flip with Oro Caldo
Balletto di Bronzo - Epilogo
VDGG - Squid 1/Squid 2/Octopus (wow.. that blew me away)
Talk Talk - The Rainbow
ELP - Toccata
Yes - The Ancient
Guru Guru - Immer Lustig
Magma - Kobaia
Traffic - Low Spark..
Rush - The Necromancer
Caravan - For RIchard
PFM - L'Isola di Niente

sh*t..

oh man...  I could just keep on going.. so many great ones.

edit...

not that leaving it off my impromptu list makes the slightest difference in the world.  but considering how much crap I send down the commode their way...  it makes sense to put them on the list.

Genesis -  The Cinema Show.

If only Genesis could have reached those heights on more than one song.. which is why I seperate them from others that could and did reach that kind of nirvana many more times.  There is something to said for being clever.. which Genesis was.. but there is more to be said for making music that sticks to your soul.  absolutely stunning piece of music.

I'm going to cause myself to be tarred and feathered by saying I love Coheed And Cambria's The Willing Well.
But, Starless by King Crimson is absolutely devestating. one of the best recordings ever..

Pass the tar and I will get the Feathers, Jack!
Coheed and Cambria is not prog! I don't care what the consensus is, its rubbish. I heard many of their album tracks and nothing comes close to what u may consider prog. What is prog about them? So they have a couple of conceptual albums - BD! Who hasnt?. OK Frank Sinatra has concept albums, is he prog, what about Beach Boys - prog? I Think Not! Its not enuff ot have concept albums to be termed prog. So what else is there a couple of time sig changes? Coheed and Cambria are alternative music! But that's all.

OTOH, Yes KC Starless is incredible!

I would venture to suggest that the guy two posts previous has not heard Coheed And Cambria's 29 minute The Willing Well which certainly IS a prog song, though many of their other tracks are not.

I thought I would only write unmentioned ones though Raff and Ivan did remind some of my favorites but there are few left. Let's see :

Amon duul II - Phalus dei
Il baletto di bronzo - Introduzione (funny how some of you chose Epilogo while I'm in love with this one)
David Bowie - Cygent comitee
Comus - Drip drip
Can - You do it right (somebody stoled my beloved "Halleluwah")
Deep purple - April & Child in time
Discipline - all 4 tracks from "Unfolded like staircase. all more than 10 minutes and all magic.
Focus - Hamburger concerto (how did you all miss this one I wonder)
Faust - Krautrock
Gong - Flying teapot
Peter Hamil - A louse is not a home & In the black room
King crimson - The battle of glass tears (the epic song from the conceptual half album - Lizard) & Fracture
Proto-kaw - Incomudro (I prefer this early version on Kansas' version)
Par Lindh project - Gradus ad parnasum
Spirogyra - In the western world (their only one above 10 minutes although the 9 minute track called "The furthest point" is better IMO)
UK - Carrying no cross
VDGG - Murglys III & La rossa
Vangelis - Heaven and hell I & II

and Micky, it's very easy ! Just say "Starless" and you'll be on the right side (I guess it is hell but who knows). Anyway, What's the point dreaming on blond ugly cows while at your home there's a beautyful dark hair and brown skin lady ? Is it another case of giving nuts to those who have no teeth ? Life isn't fair !

simply too many great ones...

Few more that I forgot to mention (and so did everyone else) :

Popol vuh - Einsjagger & Sibensjagger
Trespass - Morning light (the title track from their second album which is much better than the former IMO)
Alan Parson's project - The fall of the house of Usher
Jane - Between heaven and hell (one of the greayest epics ever IMO)

And yes, the long track from Gnidrolog's "Lady lake" is calle "I could never be a soldier' and it was allready mentioned (for good reason if you ask me).

Wow, this is a broad topic.  I'll do my best....

1. "Hamburger Concerto" by Focus
2. "Song for America" by Kansas
3. "The Count of Tuscany" by Dream Theater
4. "Supper's Ready" by Genesis
5. "Atom Heart Mother" by Pink Floyd
6. "At the End of the Day" by Spock's Beard
7. "Victorian Brickwork" by Big Big Train
8. "Mei" by Echolyn
9. "Xanadu" by Rush
10. "Child in Time" by Deep Purple

Numbers 2 - 10 are probably badly out of order, but for the life of me I couldn't decide how they should go.

1/"Supper's Ready": Without doubt, my FAVORITE epic!

3/"Octavarium": A head-spinning opus of technical chops (bordering on fetishistic), imagination and some truly captivating playing!
