I´m making this suggestion on the behalf of Dean Watson. Here´s the link to his myspace page with samples from his first solo album ( actually it´s the full album that you´re able to hear) . Dean Watson is also 1/2 of the lineup in Where´s the Nine ( http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4017 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4017 ).

Hmm...it says on the myspace that you can buy the tracks. Doesn´t that qualify as being released?

He definitely released "officially" those tracks, but it's difficult to say in which measure do they make an "album".

Good stuff nonetheless.

Hey all!

Thanks for the nice comments.  I didn't respond back right away because I am waiting on my distributor to either yay or nay it.  They told me I was accepted to the label, then they came back and asked for a CD to be sent, which I have done, and they have recieved, and confirmed receipt.  They have mentioned they would get back to me shortly.

I did say in my private email to some of you that I was not signed but had download capability.  If that is not acceptable, hey, I'm fine with that, just needed to know.  If you all decide that 's ok for submission and/or review, let me know, othewise I understand and I'll get back to you as soon as I hear back from my distributor!

Dean, PA is an album-oriented database (just like RateYourMusic is too, for example), that is why sorting the pieces as an "individual release", with tracklist, cover-art of some sort, etc., would make the addition just a formality. Other than that, I must say again that I appreciate your talent and hope you make it big! Thumbs Up

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand.  I already have track listings, CD Cover art ready to go etc. etc.  Are you suggesting I might get submission if I do that?

Well, we need to have material in the form of "album(s)" to have bands/projects added to our database. This doesn't necessarily mean that the material needs to be released on CD by a record company; self-released digital files are also OK, provided those few conditions are fulfilled. For example, check out this page of a digital self-released album: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=23206 - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=23206
Basically, the only differences between it and the material you have available on MySpace are:
- the material was released as an album (--> album title) (--> visual identity of the release, ie the cover) consisting of the succession of certain pieces (-->tracklist, the musical "identity" of the album)
- that's it, actually.

Maybe I'm not getting something here.Confused

First off! What    is     all      the     fuss? Add the guy and worry about the details later. It's more than obvious at this stage that it's only business technicalities and formalities that have to be ironed out between Dean and the record company. I was one of the guys who he contacted and I've listened to his new music. Just like Where's The Nine I'll be one of the first guys to review it. We're lucky to have someone like him interrested in our site for Christ sake. ( insert sound effect of vibrationbaby pulling his hair out and bashing his head against the wall HERE ). C'mon guys!

It's not fuss Ian, just a little misunderstandng

As Alex said, the PA is album-oriented - we are here to review albums - listing an artist without an album is therefore meaningless so we have to check first.

Just had a listen recently. It's not the same heavy complex fusion as Where's the Nine but equally enjoyable and certainly progressive (always the main factor of course) if you ask me.
I'd say: add as fast as you can guys of the jazz rock/fusion team !  Thumbs Up

Hey All,

Been a while since I have posted here, mainly because I have  been writing and finishing up my next CD - Imposing Elements.  Question:  Given the number of remaining CD's I have from Unsettled, and the popularity I had with digital downloads, I have opted to release Imposing Elements as digital download only, ( although I might take up CD-Baby's option of demand only CD manufacture for those requesting hardcopy ) so I don't end up with another bundle of paperweights!

Given the nature of downloading these days, is it still possible to obtain acceptance onto the site for it, as well as get reviews and ratings?

Thanks!

I can answer both of the above questions for you, Dean.  First one:  The rating system here at PA only does "whole-star" ratings, so if someone would want to give an album, for example, 3.5 stars, then they have to make a judgement call as to whether they find it closer to 4-star or 3-star material.  Or, some people think it's better than a 3 but can't justify a 4, so they rate it a 3 and call it a 3.5, something like that.

Second, as long as it's an album, it can be added to the site since you're here.  Album art, track listing and lineup, and all that jazz would be appreciated (not sure if it's strictly required, but I'm sure you've got art anyway).

Hope my answers helped!

A minor addendum. I see that the option to buy your musical paperweights isn't mentioned on your bandcamp site. It probably won't hurt to mention that physical editions are available on request (or something similar).

FYI,

Had some issues with the artwork, my 'guy' was out sick, and because I promised a Feb 1 release date, I had to prematurely put up the CD with artwork that was a 'work in progress'.  We are finalizing that this week, and will then contact you all again about submission to the site.

I really like the tunes and the arrangements but the Holdsworth-clone thing kind of bothers me.  You certainly have Allan's thing down, but I'd like to hear your voice when you solo, not his.  Having exchanged several e-mails with Gary Husband in the past, I know both he and Allan don't have a favorable opinion of people that cop his playing. Don't get me wrong, as a guitarist and artist myself, I think you're an excellent player and I certainly don't mean to be harsh.  I just think you just need to find something more individual when you solo to go with your excellent tunes.

Really?  Really?  I'm honoured to be even considered 'sounding' like Allan Holdsworth.  Honestly, I never thought I did, never once.  I'm really into Beck, Morse, players like that.

You know, I gave the CD  a second listen this morning, in part because I know what it's like to pour your heart and soul into something only to have someone post a negative review of your work.  In retrospect, I think my criticism of your playing, and specifically, ,my assertion of having too strong a Holdsworth influence was misdirected.  While I do hear some allusions to Allan's playing, generally the playing, like you stated, is more rooted in rock players like Beck, Morse etc.  So, my apologies for my earlier post.

I think Elements may be one of best sounding indie releases I've heard this year.  The tunes and arrangements are extremely good.  I'm actually listening to your earlier release, Unsettled, as I type this, and it may even be a stronger piece of work.

Thanks Atomic!  You will hear new music from me soon, but not too soon, I'm trying to get a handle on electric bass at the moment - yep, hopefully another instrument under my belt, and it's much more difficult than any old guitar player might think - so I'm a bit in learning phase instead of writing phase, but I do have about 20 minutes of music written for my next CD "Fantasizer" - should see it in 2013!
Re ratings: Is there anything that can be done when these types of rating manipulations occur?  Perhaps not.  I guess we will never know if someone really thinks that way, or if they are manipulating.  Oh well, just thought I'd vent.  Thanks again.

I recommended no 1 star rates unless with a review but the idea was not popular. I agree it would be fair to hear why someone has rated an album with 1 star.

Posted By: Dean Watson
Date Posted: November 08 2012 at 09:48

It gets extremely fishy when the indiviual rating you joined less than one week ago, and when every rating they have done they have given a 1 star to, but 1 entry got 5 stars ....  I also believe 5 different raters are actually the same person.

It is beyond fishy and a disservice to the artist and other members. They probably did not listen to your music. Best not to to dwell on the negativity, sometimes 2 negatives do not equal a positive.

I don't recommend ratings without reviews at all. Fortunately, a rating with review counts as heavy as 10 (members) or 20 (collabs) ratings-only.

Hello All,

I now have physical CD's of Fantasizer! in my possession.  Again, if you're looking for a review, I can pop you one in the mail, but, also my music is up on Bandcamp, if your CD cabinet is full!

Thank you!
