So, we all have one or two albums by a band few others know about. And we listen to them and think... this needs to reach more people! Sometimes it´s not even the band itself or a whole album, sometimes it´s just a song. So, let´s talk about them.

I´ll go first with:

Twin Zero´s Monolith. Not the album, but the actual song Monolith. It´s a 22 epic divided into 7 sections and it´s just... awesome. If you are into post metal, Tool (although it has nothing to do with Tool´s music) or don´t mind a bit of heavy sections I HIGHLY recomment this to anyone. There is a real idea behind the music, with a very original and minimalistic aproach, you can really hear a mastermind behind it who really thought every aspect of the piece. Not to be disrespectful, but it´s not a Dream Theater, Genesis blueprint/clone kind of epic, of which there are a lot. This is really unique stuff. I repeat, Monolith the song, not the album. The album consists of the 22 min epic and two other songs, which, although not bad, don´t come close to the heights of the epic. Monolith, the song, is a masterpiece, it really is and I urge you to check it out.

So, which unknown little wonder do you know?

I have quite a few, but the first one to spring to mind is Faithful Breath's "Fading Beauty", which is a gorgeous symphonic prog album from 1973, years before the band was to strangely morph into an 80s metal act. The album essentially consists of two side-long epics, rooted firmly in the mellotron-drenched symphonic prog scene of the early 70s. A wonderful album that I have listened to many times over the years. A hidden gem!

Patrick Moraz: Timecode. Man I love that album. Be warned though, its a cross between Peter Gabriel III and generic AOR production, with that characteristic 1984 sound (like Tull's and Zee's album of that year). It's great though!

Edit: Realizing I said generic AOR 1) some generic AOR production but obviously Moraz is a experimentalist first and foremost. 2) as a second recommendation I think most Prog fans have overlooked: Bob Dylan's (for instance) Infidels (1983), but its not necessarily prog.

Circle Takes The Square - As The Roots Undo

An orgy of avant-metal, hardcore and heavy punk. Prog tech-metal as you've never heard it, one of my top 3 albums from the genre for sure.

This side of the water in the UK - well known . Theme music for a well loved art TV programme The South Bank Show came from this and indeed one episode was about this album.

Madder Mortem's Deadlands. Its an amazing pice of progressive metal with doom and death metal leanings and a fantastic vocalist in Agnete Kirkvaarg, a powerful and unique female vocalist that cant be pigeonholed with the operatic types you get in goth/symph metal.

Audience - House On The Hill. Howard Werth gives it vocal welly whilst haunting sax and acoustic guitar make for a pretty stunning combination. Everyone i've persuaded to listen to this has bought it.

Autumn Grass - Continuum
Missing Pieces - National Health
Estación de sombra - Nazca
Manna/Mirage - The Muffins
Osiris - Zao
J'un Oeil - Sloche (this album is at the top of the jazz rock section on prog archives so it should be getting more listens)
Arkham's self titled

I think Egg's The Civil Surface doesn't get enough appreciation. There's some extremely ****ing complicated stuff going on there and I love it.

Chimpan A - S/T.  Not really prog, just beautiful. Rob Reed from Magenta is part of this project,

Al Stewart - Last days of the century.  Seems like a lot of people like Al around here but no one ever talks about this one.

An Endless Sporadic's debut EP is only about 20 minutes long, but it's absolutely bursting with energy.  An instrumental prog metal duo create awesome songs that seamlessly flow from DT-esque heavy riffing and soloing, to funk, fusion, jazzy keyboard rock, noise, breakdowns, lounge music, and back again.  A truly awesome little EP.

His most popular seems to be Year of the cat, but my favourite of his is "Past, present and future" - the song Roads to Moscow is particularly good.

I've attended Al Stewart concerts numerous times over the years and he always pleases. As a lyricist he is unsurpassed!  And if I were forced to choose Roads To Moscow might well be my favorite. Wink

This is a very special album for me! I bought the LP in 1978. It wasn't so strange then. I think Julian Lloyd Webber talked Andrew into doing this album or maybe it was some sort of bet they had made between each other. There was history on Paganini ...written on the innersleeve. I purchased the cd for about 25 dollars. Rod Argent is superb on this one! They all are very brilliant. A strange direction for Andrew Lloyd Webber because it was a progressive rock album with progressive musicians playing the music of Paganini as opposed to a straight up Classical recording or typical Broadway play. Paganini was said by followers in the 18th century, to have been in league with the devil. Strange how those accusations haven't changed much as his 24 caprices were adapted by many Heavy Metal guitarists that wrote songs about the devil. Probably a hoax if anything as he was judged that way because he dressed in black, and was a tall man with huge hands to play the violin. His appeared shocking to folks. The whole Variations is rather bewitching to me. Especially the ambient type sections inbetween that lead into the pieces themselves. Webber was very crafty with this project. He really should have continued fusing classical with prog. Very highly recommended!
