My girldriend's favourite prog bands (not that I've exposed her to too many, yet) are Porcupine Tree and Magma (hint: see sig Wink)

It depends on the girl.  We have various females at PA, and they have disparate tastes. Some are into Krautrock, RIO/Avant, Zeuhl, Heavy Prog, you name it.

As for my girl (six years old), she actually asks for me to put on Magma, but, then, she also asks for Mellow Candle, so....

As for Collin's fronted Genesis (the Collins' era), only the early albums are really Prog era, I think. I haven't noticed girls/women at PA extolling their love for Collins.  I have for Christian Vander and others.

The girls I know are into Dream Theater, Tool, and Pink Floyd.

Absolutely. I think Baldjean would agree, too...

Maybe he was asking for fave prog band of non prog loving females, in which case I think Collins era Genesis would probably win out.

It's funny, the girls I know like what I said (DT, Tool, PF), yet hate all other prog.

It would only count if they liked Collins' Prog era Genesis, though (or the Prog side of Collins' fronted Genesis).

So far, of the things I've exposed my girlfriend to listen, she has enjoyed Genesis (both eras), Dream Theater and Muse the most. It seems very difficult that she will get into Opeth ever  LOL(because of the growling, you know...).

Well lets see what my mom likes.... PF, Tool, and Radiohead. She can't stand Dream Theater because she thinks they're a glam metal band (she even said they sounded like one in BCaSL). Cry

A better title for this thread would be 'why do guys who get into prog-rock find women to be such a mystery'.
I seriously doubt that there is a 'brand' of prog-rock 'made for a woman' (ie like deoderants etc) just as there is not a brand of prog rock made for the guys.

I guess the other question would be 'why do threads like this tend to show up on prog rock sites?'

For grunge it would be easier for me though. It seems like a common pattern that of the girls I know, they mostly like Stone Temple Pilots and Silverchair the most. Don't ask me why. I don't have a clue.

It's because male prog rock rock fans tend to be clueless when it comes to women and are looking for answers which they can't find in real life -- especially the socially inept ones (and let's face it, such communities attract the socially inept/ inexperienced) that spend their time on message boards rather than out there in the "real world".

I'm far from socially inept, and I can say that there are lots of girls/women out there who like a few prog bands (without even knowing what prog is). Most of them only like 3-5 prog bands, though. However, one or two of my female friends do like prog in general. One of my friends is really into prog metal and likes Dream Theater, Tool, Shadow Gallery, Psychotic Waltz, Symphony X, and more. Another one I know is into the older stuff like PF, Yes, Genesis, and even VdGG (which I introduced her to). Speaking of which, maybe I should introduce her to Magma. LOL

This thread smells a bit like the old "Girls? In my Prog?" thema which rises from times to times in the forum.
It reminds that, in high school, I knew a girl rather fond of alternative rock (think Garbage and that stuff), but which enjoyed Kraftwerk and covered Deep Purple's "Child In Time" with her band.
I also should have talked a bit more with another girl who told me she liked progressive rock, especially Mike Oldfield.

There are no rules. My girlfriend is into blues, hard rock and AOR and she really dislikes prog, except for Pink Floyd. Eric Clapton is indeed her God. Since she's into Dire Straits, I tried some mild Tull as well as some radio-friendly prog, but she simply doesn't like it.

When I want to annoy her, I play the most brutal avant rock stuff in my car stereo. To my surprise, she liked The Residents a lot!LOL

You know what almost caused my wife to yank it out of the car player and fling it out the window: Philip Glass - Music With Changing Parts.  I was not playing it to annoy her though. LOL

Wow, I would almost consider this a sexist remark. My girlfriend hates Collins era Genesis, she thinks it's sh*t just like we do. Women aren't stupid and they don't just like sappy ballads 'n sh*t. i would say that just as many, if not more men like what we consider to be poor music over women.

My girlfriend listens to the following prog bands:

Isis
OSI
Opeth
Mars Volta
Rush
Nightwish
Jethro Tull (her favorite being Heavy Horses)
Klaatu
Tiles
Mastodon
3 (the modern one)
Coheed & Cambria
Porcuoine Tree + Steven Wilson
Radiohead (from Kid A onwards)
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Pink Floyd + Syd Barrett Solo
Traffic
The Decemberists

So I'm actually quite offended by the ignorance in the OP.

The Missus tells me that it depends upon the "mood of the night". Tonight, I think we'll have a montage, but she is partial to a lot of Oldfield, Gabriel, Yes, IQ, Porcupine Tree and quite a few others. In fact, the only one she hates with a passion is my favourite band - H era MarillionCry

Yes, I know, my english is terrible. But what i real wanted with this topic was to know the girls opinion about that = PA girls members comments, since i know there is not such thing like an homogeneous musical taste for different genders (im not stupid), all i wanted to found was some similarity  between the PA girls outline, and its sad that this was so misunderstood. But it could be my gramatical fault.  And i started with the "Genesis Collins era" example cause my ex-girlfriend love it and i ask for many women in my city if they likes prog and the most close to that i ve got was songs like "Illegal Alien"; "Mama" etc, thats not exactly prog, i know... "Pardon me" if it sound sexist, but it wasnt at all my itention.

Well in that case, knowing that there's about....six active women of this entire forum you could probably ask them. Sorry for misunderstanding.

All righty, I guess I could have a go at this. My favourite prog band is Jethro Tull, but my overall favourite band is Queen. Now in terms of subgenres, Prog Folk is at the top, this including bands like Comus, Spirogyra, Mellow Candle, Loudest Whisper, The Pentangle, Tir Na nOg, Fresh Maggots etc etc. But then there's also the Zeuhl bunch which include Magma, Shub-Niggurath or Weidorje; RPI - QVL, PFM or Nouva Idea; then the usual suspects like Yes, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Zappa, Genesis (PG era), Caravan and so on. I cannot put them all down, but as far as I'm concerned they are pretty varied. :D

my girlfriend's fave bands are Floyd, Supertyramp,  Tangerine Dream and Moody Blues, but she also enjoys my specially-for-her-edited ITCOTCK, her favourite making love album.

Oh--a language thing.  Okay, makes some sense now.

I would argue the point that men and women like different things though.  I think that might not really be true.

When I first got into music that I really liked, made me think and stuff (it was only much later that I discovered this music actually had a name--"progressive"; before that it was just "the music I liked") my boyfriend at the time liked most of the same stuff--VdGG, Genesis, Floyd.  But we did diverge on different things.  He was a Zappa fan, I never much was, he *llloooovvveeeedddd* Rush and Queen, and I was meh on them.

I don't think he was much into the folk-rock stuff I liked.

I don't think it is a gender thing.  I think it is a people thing.

No, it's written "ITCOTCK", not "ITCOCK".

I'm going out (but, seriously, people, could you stop using this acronym? Visually, it can make people having wrong ideas about King Crimson).

In case of itchy cock, I think it's the girl who is the first to leave the flat, disgusted, furious and somewhat sad.

Now that I'm in this thread, I would need an information from Alucard: wasn't it you who told me that you read somewhere that French bassist Joëlle Léandre talked about Genesis' Nursery Cryme in an old interview?

If your girl has an itchy cock are you sure she's really a girl? Tongue

Well... Depends. If she's the cock between the thighs, I will have some doubts about her gender. But maybe she's just a hermaphrodite.

If she has the cock in one hand and a cutting object in the other hand... I think I would slowly move closer to the door...

I've known some female Tool fans.
My friend's mom loves Yes.
Most women I've known though, have absolutely hated Gentle Giant.
