Both of these are great albums and both seem kind of misunderstood to me. Passion Play was the "self-indulgent" follow-up to TAAB and Minstrel is the low rated masterpiece to me.  Which one do you like better? I prefer MITG.

I prefer MInstrel too, but this is not to say I do not like A Passion Play.

A Passion Play by far, though Minstrel is excellent.

At least I'm not alone in preferring Minstrel.  But it's sort of like asking a chocoholic if they prefer chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, or chocolate ice cream.

LOL

Oh!

You've nailed my favorite two Jethro Tull albums.  I could really vote either way these days.

In any event, A Passion Play is far superior to Thick as a Brick

I've been fonder longer with Minstrel in the Gallery though...

...what to do, what to do...

Minstrel is my favorite JT album ever. So, it was really an easy choice.

DO IT It's a better album than TaaB, even though my favorite Tull "song" is the first half of TaaB. LOL

SAME HERE! My fave Tull song, and one of my all-time fave songs is Thick as a Brick Part 1, but A Passion Play has both parts which are brilliant thus making it a better album.

I probably will check it out eventually, but there are a lot of albums by a lot of bands which I'm going to check out first, so it may take a long time to get here. LOL

Minstrel is tulls weakest vital realease of the 15 spanning 1969-1982 imo. A passion play is fairly good but wouldn't be among my top 5 of these 13. That shows how strong Tull were. Here's how i rank them:

Thick as a brick-excellent album
Living in the past-stunning bunch of classic singles and other super extras
Heavy horses-very very good album. Some brilliant prog folk
Bursting out-super live album and one of the best you'll ever find
Warchild-was an average soundtrack album but 7 very good bonus tracks make it tulls #1 remaster. You'll wonder what the band was thinking. Genius band trying to be commecrial
Stormwatch-pretty cool album and 4 very enjoyable bonus tracks.
Songs from the wood-pretty good album but not as genius as heavy horses
Benefit-fairly good album but 3 super bonus tracks
Aqualung-strong side 1, average side 2, 2 cool bonus tracks
A-pretty cool album
Broadsword and the beast-fairly good album and at least 2 strong bonus tracks
A passion play-pretty good album
Stand up-fairly good album with 3 cool bonus tracks
Too old to rock n roll too young to die-pretty average soundtrack but last 2 tracks and 2 bonus tracks are strong
Minstrel in the gallery-Decent album but tull becomes guitar orientated, more repetitive and glamour like and the acoustics become simpler and longer. Cool bonus tracks though

The bold releases are probably the only 2 which rank 4 star at best. Probably 7.5/10 which is still quite good but the other 13 releases are better imo. All of the others would get 8.5/10 or more  Wink

A Passion Play would seem up your alley.

A Passion Play, but only just. Minstrel is my second favorite Tull album by a narrow margin.

Minstrel in the Gallery. A Passion Play has some excellent moments, but nevertheless it is a 4-star album matched against a rounded-up 3-star album.
