| I'm pretty sure that the Archives Vol 1 have got a studio recording of it (the B-side to I Know What I Like). That may be live but it doesn't seem like it. I mean the quality isn't the greatest but it seems on-par with the Trespass/NC recordings. Considering how it seems similar to that era in terms of writing as well, I'd guess it was a song written and recorded around that point in time that didn't see the light of day until SEBTP |

They released the demo on this box set: They never made it an official release on any other album. It was a live staple in their early years. I had it years ago on a Charisma sampler in the 70's that was the first time I had heard it. -------------

I first heard this gen of a song in the late 70's when the local TVOntario station aired the Belgian Pop Shop broadcast.....
This show has been officialy released on the NC or Foxtrot DVD-A of the boxset
I was also lucky enough to have a friend that posessed the single, so I got to hear it (and taped it) quite a few times in the late=70's and early-80's, until the tape died (it was my friend's BASF cassette, I only used XLIIS
I didn't get to hear another version for almost 20 years until that Archives boxset). I think gen should've added it as an extra to either NC or Trespass ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

| Good point Hugues. For many years the track gained almost legendary status as it was all but impossible to actually hear it. I'm talking of course about the pre download/Mp3 days. The non-album single "Happy the man" was the same. |

The first embryonic 'riff' from twighlight Alehouse can be heard between tracks on 'Genesis to Revelation' and was indeed a popular Live song from very early on but one which they never got around to recording in those days. a version was recorded for the BBC live sessions in 72 and there is some debate whether this version is the one which is often stated on bootlegs (its a bit rough but a great version!! a bit longer than the single version). A 'Live in the Studio' version from the belgian 'Rock of the 70's' TV programme from early 72 is available on various DVD's and as a DVD extra on the recent Genesis-1970-75 CD box set on the Foxtrot 2 disc. The version on the 'Archives' is the same as the 'B' side of 'I know what i like' single (1973, CB.224) but was released before that as a single sided 'Flexi disc' to members of the fan club and then free with New Musical express or Sounds (or even Melody maker- i forget!!).
A Great Genesis songs; one of the best ever in fact and well, well worth tracking down

A great song... but, I prefer the live Belgian TV version compared to the studio (B-side single) version. I often believe Genesis was a more powerful live band, than when they recorded in the studio. Both "Genesis Live" and "Seconds Out" are great examples of how good this band could be. ------------- CLH |
