I'm not the world's greatest DT fan but I saw this on sale in HMV for £2 at the weekend (along with Opeth's Blackwater Park) so I thought I'd risk it as it's supposed to be their best. I was pleasantly surprised - one of my complaints about DT is that they are lacking in the melody department - but this is quite melodic and reminiscent of some of Salem Hill's concept work in places.
Anyway, the question I have is - why is this Metropolis part 2? Where or what is part 1?

Part 1 is a song on Images and Words.
And yes - Scenes From a Memory is awesome!

Metropolis PT-1 is an epic song included in their second album "Images & Words". it's a 10 minutes song with one of the best instrumental parts ever made in a prog album (I'm not kidding).
The goal of the second part was to emulate the melodies and there are many musical references, both lyrically and musically to that song, but in the "story" there are evident differences. The first part is more sci-fy story and it's not very clear what the story is about, but there are references to reencarnation and the characters mentioned on the PT-2, The Miracle and The Sleeper. For many people this is their favorite song and is one classic in their live concerts.
You should check it out. It's fun to recognize the references and the parts repprissed in the second part. Just that the singing of Labrie is not that clear as in PT-2, he was too over the top for some people and I liked it, but for most people, he get's a little bit annoying. Try to check out the song man. I'm sure you willl appreciate it, have fun...

This is an answer to both dogs: I do have the album and I do read where it was the album on sale. It was to make the emphasis that I need the "legal" copy of the album. It's hard to find in Guatemala and in a very high price, so I have a copy of the copy of my brother... so I "have it" but I have to buy it now...
The expression was to show you my determination to have it, I need a legal official copy in my hands... OK...?

Yep. I guess it's not worth the price of a flight to the UK to get a cheap copy though.

The follow up Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance is even better imo. Jordan Rudess flexes his muscles and it has a more expansive instrumental feel compared to other DT albums that I've heard.

Do you have to bring a downer on Chopper who bought the CD? He already says he likes it and this isn't a thread about criticizing it.

Imo scenes of a memory is a great album, but images and words still takes the cake as the best DT album.

Images & Words is definitely worth having, besides containing some great music (much more than just Metropolis Pt 1) it can be considered an historical album for the prog-metal genre.
But it is a bit more immature than Metropolis Pt 2.
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is a must-have as well.

Hola Juan!! Have you tried eBay? My cousins in Honduras have purchased some albums thru there. I guess the issues is finding a vendor who will ship to Guatemala.
I broke my PT2 CD and found another one on eBay for US6 delvd to my house. I use eBay a lot, CD are cheap and they DO have the UPC code which I verify with the record label to make sure it is the same, not some illegal copy.
But I also use Zune Marketplace which is subscription service to download all the music I want.
Good luck
EDIT: BTW....Metro PT2 is amazing album!!! For sure one of my favorites.....

There's a live DVD with the whole of Metropolis part 2, perhaps you would be interested in that one too. I also like 6 degrees a lot, but for contrary reasons than most: I love CD 1, but find CD 2 (the actual 6 degrees song ) rather dull. However, for proggers certainly CD 2 is the most interesting part. I also think you might like to check out the song "Octavarium" from the album of the same name, that is one of my very favourite epics, and one of the favourite DT songs on this site.

1.- 6DOIT
2.- Metropolis
3.- Images and Words
4.- Octavarium
5.- Awake
Metropolis is one of the best albums all time I ever heard.

True, quite true. I just bought this at a sale, just to own a legal copy instead of the one I ripped when I was a kid back in the day. My girlfriend has always said, that DT is something she'll probably never learn to like. Now she was pretty surprised, that this is the same band than on, say, Octavarium, and she really liked this. A lot more melodic. There was a lot of melodies in metal back in the 90's :)
