I think this is a bit of a silly poll and we don't do those kinds of things around here. LOL
Which is to say, hell I don't know.

Are we having them joust with guitars or something?
Seems like Ray would be fiercer, but Mike could take him with the double neck thingy. Tongue

Ray.

But Rutherford will surely win because he's with Genesis which automatically makes him one of the best at what he does.

So that means Schulman.LOL

He was better in every way I can think of, plus he played a lot of instruments, something that the other guy didn't.Clap

TO be honest, I thought this was going to be somewhat of a tie... I like Mike's attack speed bass lines!

Never mind. I had no idea Ray was so highly acclaimed here.

Oh Ray Shulman easily. I love MIke Rutherford's bass playing skills but Ray Schulman beats him in every way.

Would you like some Bailey's?

The irony is that Mike is the one Genesis member, at least from the famous fivesome and leaving aside Phillips, who doesn't quite get his due. He is a wonderful bassist, indispensable to Genesis I reckon, but not better than Ray in my reading and, it seems, in that of majority of those who have voted so far on this poll.

It's kind of surprise for me to see this result in favor of the Gentle Giant bass player. I do think Shulman deserves it.

This guy:

Ray Shulman

http://www.blazemonger.com/GG/File:Rayhead.jpg">{{{width}}}
Name: Ray Shulman
Born: December 8, 1949, in Portsmouth, England
In band: 1970 - 1980
Instruments: Bass, trumpet, violin, vocals, viola, drums, percussion, recorder, guitar
If would´ve been Rutherford as versatile as Ray, I would´ve  thought about him.

I love Rutherford, but I don't think there is much comparison. Another vote for the leader.

I would like to find a poll where I gave Mike my vote as a bassist. I enjoy his bass lines. But this goes to Schulman.

This is, because PA members honestly answer your question Hug. This is not a poll Genesis vs. Gentle Giant, in which case, Genesis would win by miles.

You know (?) - it has taken me about 12.9 seconds to decide................it has to be Ray.  I love both of their respective bands' dearly.  Mike R. is highly skillled, but I'm sure that what he achieved post-Selling England never exceeded his approach.  Ray went from strength-to-strength on each album up to, at least a year later with 'Power And The Glory'.  Ray's bass-lines are a frad more complex than Mike's.  And then, comparing Ray's bass on 'Civilian' (1980), sure exceeds Mike's on Duke (1980).  Ray played extra instruments (namely, Violin) and Mike played a rather 'generic' lead-guitar.  They are both superb musicians, but for me, Ray takes the cake.  Discounting the executive mogul's decision of doing 'From Genesis To Revelation' as a debut album (3 stars for me), Gentle Giant produce their self-titled effort of a much higher quality (and a smidgeon better than 'Trespass').  Ray it is.

Mike Rutherford. I give him a plus for his rhythm guitar, which provided some unlikely chords with interesting tunings, and the texture created with his 12 string accompanyment with Anthony Phillips and Banks and Hackett.

A little surprised. Rutherford is pretty damn brilliant on A Trick Of The Tail. Shulman is obviously very talented as well but I can't think of anything off the top of my head that matches say Los Endos.

Go Ray!

How complex and funky can you get?

I am amazed at this vote. But to me Ray Shulman was one of *the* best prog bass players and not just vs Mike R.

I do think Rutherford is often an underrated member of Genesis, and an underrated bassist.  However, Shulman still wins this one.
