Favorite this, favorite that.. how important are our favorite bands?

1. Choose your five favorite bands
2. Vote and tell me about what your personal poll was

for instance..

KC, VdGG, GG, Magma & SBB vs. The rest of my collection
I myself voted for The rest.

the nice part of being a music hound is that I have dozens (at least) favorite bands.

So Zep, Beatles, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, CSN

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Could I get by on just Kansas, Yes, Echolyn, Rush, and one other band I've not thought of?

Probably.  I certainly wouldn't want to do without them.

Pretty easy, I'd choose my 5 favorite artists:

Frank Zappa (huge discography, diversity of the best), Deep Purple, Miles Davis (not actually my top 5, but I'd choose him in this instance lol), Pink Floyd and maybe some other Prog band, Yes maybe.

It would be extremely more interesting if people who voted for their five favourites would tell us what they are. Otherwise, well,it's dull.

Can, Magma, Ruins, The Cardiacs, and Henry Cow for me, and I believe I'll vote for those 5.  I'd have a good chunk of material between the five, and I'd eventually figure out a way to get the rest of my collection back. LOL

Hmm...could I make Ruins "various Tatsuya Yoshida-led bands"?  Then I'd be set for life basically...I'd get Koenjihyakkei, Korekyojinn, The World Heritage and some other stuff thrown in for free. LOL

It was difficult and I voted for my 5 favourite bands : VdGG, Genesis, ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull.
But I didn't include in the "rest" my collection of classical music that is 100 times more important for me than all prog bands.
Mozart+Beethoven+Thcaikovsky+Bach+Shumann+Ravel would win VS my rock collection Disapprove

my five favourite bands are more important to me than everything else left over that i have, so i voted for them
        they are:

Triumvirat, Brainstorm, Dzyan, Wallenstein, and Colosseum

i have a separate gigantic collection of classical music that is very important to me as well, and the top five there also outweigh the rest-
Bruckner, Berlioz, Richard Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler

I know my five favourite bands and artists (Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Nick Drake and ELP) well enough and I'm in a mood to explore some music outside my limited scope, so I vote for the rest of my collection.

The rest of my collection. I'm more of an album-based devotee than a devotee of certain bands/ artists (there are hundreds of albums by hundreds of different acts/ bands that I love).

Genesis
Porcupine Tree
Marillion
Van Der Graaf Generator Vs. Everything Else... I don't know, I just don't know

Interesting and thought provoking poll. For that refreshing change, a great bigClapClapClapClap

My five favourites:

Marillion
Genesis
Jethro Tull
Yes
Pink Floyd

So, four classic bands, and one neo. However, I most certainly could not live without the other great music I have. Just looking at neo, what would life be without IQ and Pendragon? Ugh. If I had to take one album to a desert island, at the moment it would be David Minasian's exceptional 2010 release. What about life without Rush?

The simple fact is that the vast majority of music I have, I love, with only a few stinkers that I could well do without.

Tull, Crimson, Camel, Yes and Floyd for me. The rest are very close and could not live without them, but these five are the real deal.

Yes.. this poll turned out to be exciting, I myself didn't really no what would happen. When thinking about it, and looking at my 'holy section' of my record collection.. it does feel strange leaving it behind.

My 5 favorite bands:

Genesis
Yes
Rush
Opeth
Dream Theater

I would certainly miss out on these guys but I think I'd vote for the rest. Now, would this include my current collection or could it also include further additions to it?

My top five
ELP
IQ
Rush
Yes
Genesis

versus
Porcupine Tree
Tangerine Dream
Eloy
Kayak
Muse
Radiohead
Mansun
Par Lindh Project
Iron Maiden
Focus
Magenta
Glass Hammer
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
Spocks Beard
etc

truly horrible question!!

The only way I could pick my top five over the rest is to switch PT with Yes. That would give me a more balanced top five and I might be happy with just that, but then it wouldn't honestly be my top five favourite bands anymore. So I have to vote for ''the rest''. Par Lindh and Glass Hammer gives me a good hit of symphonic prog while there is plenty of neo prog out there to choose. The biggest miss for me would be Genesis who are completely unique.

Posted By: Nathaniel607

I don't see how anyone can vote for top five to be honest. No matter how diverse or large the discography of your top five artists, there will be a comparatively infinite amount of other music out there! It just seems crazy to me! Heck, I wouldn't do it if it was Top 20!

EDIT: Well, actually, it depends on the theoretical consequences of this vote... does the rest of our collection just disappear, or does it mean we can never listen to music outside our top five ever again? So could we not just vote "The Rest" then re-buy the top 5?

I'm putting too much thought into this... Smile

Hmmm... my top five artists would most likely be:

The Residents
Zappa
Robyn Hitchcock
XTC
and
and
and
shoot, would that be King Crimson, Richard Thompson, maybe Porcupine Tree, The Beatles?  Drat, I don't know.

If I chose to rid myself of the five and went with the rest, can I assume that in the "rest" there are compilations and box sets and such things that just might include a song or two by the sacred five?

Oddly enough I don't actually have five favorite bands because I've got so much good stuff in my collection now.  Terms like 'favorite" and "best" lose any meaning.

Magma, Yes, King Crimson, Zappa & Genesis.
I can't imagine life without these.

But there are fantastic music I would desperately miss:
Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, VDGG, Hatfield, Caravan, National Health, Wyatt, Miles Davis, Mahavishnu, Strawbs, Greenslade, Colosseum, Pekka Pohjola, Matching Mole, Kaipa, Manning, Roy Harper, Kevin Ayers, Peter Gabriel, Traffic, Hancock, Di Meola, Laswell ...

Quantity-wise, my collection would square off against the combined heft of:

Zappa
Crimson
Davis
Prince
Bowie

That basically covers anything and everything anyone would ever want to listen to.

vote for everything else. I think i could do a favorite albums list but a favorite artist list is a different story.
Ask me to pick my top 10-15 albums against everything else and THEN you might get a different answer.

1989 should be the last stop for anyone who truly cares about the art form once known as music. Anything after that is an absolute insult to the masterpieces of the Golden Age. And really, who said anything about 69?

I have a really diverse collection, so I'd definitely go with the rest of it. I don't listen to half of my top five bands nearly as often as I used to anyway, since I know all their music so well by now.

EDIT: I guess my top five if I had to pick would be:
Queen
Jethro Tull
Rush
The Kinks
Be Bop Deluxe

With about a hundred others that could just as easily take the number five slot.

I don't even know who my top 5 would be. According to lastfm they are Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Tears for Fears, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Yes, I could easily go with the rest of my collection, I've heard those 5 so much I don't need to really hear them anymore. XD

Siouxsie & The Banshees
Anekdoten

Eh...Megadeth .. Sabbath... Thumbs Down
