Well i know that the mars volta are influenced by king crimson but i think alot of their music sound like van der graaf like forexample a plague of lighthouse keepers sound like a song made in tmv fashion. So i think king crimson and van der graaf is perhaps the two only prog bands that sound like the mars volta.

Anybody else that can think of anything sounding like tmv?

TMV sounds like King Crimson, VdGG, and Led Zeppelin having a crack-addict orgy.

Mojo magazine produced on article on TMV about 18 months ago, and included an insert on the ten influential albums on the band - ICOTCK, and Birds Of Fire were no.1 and 2 on the list.

Pink Floyd.  Omar and Cedric's old band covered them on their anthology release.

The band lists Mahavishnu Orchestra as their biggest influence, also fripp and eno.

Do you know what's odd?  I love The Mars Volta, and I also love At The Drive-In, but when Omar and Cedric were in At The Drive-In, their sound didn't reflect those influences they listed in Volta.  Do you think they recently found them and used them in Volta?  Or did they always like the bands and wanted to be part of the scene ATDI was in...

One of the reasons they left ATDI was to pursue the music they play in TMV.  Omar grew tired of the "emo" tunes they were playing, so he and Cedric quit the band just as they were about to hit the big time.  Pretty courageous really, when you think about it.

Some of the salsa sounds that Omar grew up on can be heard in ATDI and they also did a pink floyd cover, but it wasn't until TMV that they could fully express themselves musically.

I think there is also some Rush and Led

Zeppelin influences in their music too.

i hear a bit of crimson, rush, lots of zeppelin, van der graaf, some yes influence, and of course mahavishnu sounds, but mostly i think the mars volta are their own sound, however highly/lowly influenced they were, though it is evident that they had their prog influences...here's a proposition:

who were their non prog influences (besides zeppelin)?

i'll have to think about this one

...emo is a dumb label applied to music with "emotion", or that's what it used to be

now it's a term used to refernce to a style of rock where induced indulgence in basically whining about things occurs. the perfect modern day emo exemplary lyric: "just kill me oh god just kill me so i can please just die happy" etc etc blah blah whining...

the mars volta definately do NOT fall into that category, and in my opinion, neither did ATDI

ATDI was more angry yelling in violent terms...

Cedric certainly did a lot more screaming in ATDI but I love "Arcarsenal" from Relationship Of Command ...I used to crank that song at least 3x in a row before moving on to the rest of the CD!

Relathionship of command is the only album that come close in terms of sound to the sound of The Mars Volta. Listen Arcarsenal and the guitar parts are like the ones in Cicatriz first minutes.

Well. I read a review with Omar and Cedric and heard one on a mexican radio and they quote in the latin influence the Fania All Stars (a 70's salsa band), Genesis and obviusly King Crimson. Cerdric is also a huge fan of Can and both Omar and Cedric have a total respect to Syd Barrett (they did a cover Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk when they were in ATDI). So, i think they are more fans of the psychedelic Pink Floyd era.

And as i read the other posts i found Led Zeppelin, Van Der Graaf and Mahavishnu Orchestra and some Yes (Close to the edge and Heart of Sunrise).

By the way Frances the Mute is driving me mad, i can't stop playing it and now i think i've blown the car speakers. I need therapy

Definitely.  In fact I immediately thought Yes when I first heard Francis the Mute.  Particularly Relayer era Yes.  Just listen to any bootleg of Yes from that period and you'll definitely hear a similarity.

They've said King Crimson & Can before.  Mahavishnu as well.

I hear some Yes (Relayer), some early King Crimson, lots of Mahavishnu, some Zeppelin...all the bands people listed, basically.

I was just going to point that one out. Omar sounds a lot like Steve Howe sometimes, and parts of the jam section of Cassandra Geminni seriously remind me of Gates and Sound Chaser.

I think Jeff Buckley is a strong influence.  Not only because the singer sound like him, but the wild emotion of the music.

I hear some punk band influences as well! Pistols and some early Clash.

When I listened to Francis The Mute, I sensed a lot of King Crimson influence, particularly some of the guitar parts and the sections with saxophones on Cassandra Gemini.

Also, I read that Omar started on bass but moved to guitar because he needed more strings to express himself.

When I interviewed John Frusciante (of Red Hot Chili Peppers) for the Van der Graaf Generator book I co-wrote < http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/095513370X/qid%3D1137093693/sr%3D8-1/ref%3Dpd%5Fka%5F1/026-4456074-1492463 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/095513370X/qid%3D11 37093693/sr%3D8-1/ref%3Dpd%5Fka%5F1/026-4456074-1492463  > we were talking about VdGG's H to He and JF said that when he guested on MV's 'De-Loused' cd, he and Omar did this double guitar thing that reminded JF of Fripp's double lead on 'Emperor' from the H to He album. He mentioned it to Omar and Omar knew exactly what he was talking about and agreed. So, it's probably safe to say that MV (or at least Omar) are VdGG fans (John even mentioned that they were).
