What's your favorite instrument? I think I covered a good deal of many instruments used in prog/ fusion. If you choose other say your favorite instrument.

Electric piano is the quintessential fusion instrument whether it be a Rhodes, Wurli, or even an RMI (which is transistor based). After that, I'd probably choose Soprano Sax.

For pure Timbre I love the harpsichord. Although, it's not exactly a popular fusion instrument.

Anyway though, the piano is much more versatile and I prefer it overall.

Electric guitar is leading instrument in Prog and Rock music generally. Due to sure bias, this instrument would have to be excluded from the poll.

At all cost, guitar was my choice obviously, followed by bass and keyboards. Then drums and saxophones (mainly tenor) by a margin.

hmm maybe I should do another poll without the guitar.

Incidentally, this idea isn´t too original here. Maybe, let try to divide all instruments to sections, i.e. string, wind, etc.

When Prog and Fusion are grouped together - Acoustic/Classical guitar when used in hands of great musicians like Howe and DiMeola, they add a dimension to the recording

I'd have to say it is the piano.

I play guitar and of course love hearing it in all the music I listen to, but in prog I really like the mellotron and theremin.

Violins, violas, cellos, double basses and string ensembles always make a good addition

Favorite instrument is bass guitar, and prog and fusion has really original bass pieces.

I went with synth.

I voted for Electric Bass Guitar since it is possible to have outstanding prog without electric guitar (Weather Report), but impossible without the bass guitar, or so it seems.

Electric synth standing in for bass is close, BUT you can't emulate the trebly piano-string sound of Squire & Lake with the synth!  The fretless sounds of Jaco and Percy Jones are also thoroughly unique.

Fretted?  Make mine a Rick 4001.   Fretless?  My Manson (pictured) does nicely.

Both instruments used here:

Not in prog or jazz fusion, but i'm feeling that they should be the genres' next step forward?

On a serious note, my favourite instrument ever is the Fender Rhodes. Gotta be vintage as well, imitations lack the richness and quality.

The bass guitar...it can add so much depth with the way the player is using it...(Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, etc...)
