Anyway, thanks Scott for your postin' this info.
I am so relieved to hear from you causing tears in my eyes. I am more emotional than I thought.
Appreciate your comments. At the moment on the news it says 19 dead, and there is footage of the massive waves taking out the buildings, seen over and over. Australia is watching intensely.
the announcer said now 'theres a horrible sense of not knowing what to do' and they are talking to an Australian, Walter Antony, caught in the quake.

There are always threats of aftershocks, landslides, and I see there are tsunami warnings posted for Australia, NZ, Mexico and Hawaii. Precautionary and I hope it stays that way and Japan can escape with as little damage as possible.

I am sure the warnings are only pre-cautionary. You are much closer but they are expecting tides (on top of the norm of course) of a meter in Hawaii and up to 20 inches on the US West Coast. Not drastic but amazing to see how far reaching these things can be.

the Tsunami 2004 killed people in Somalia and Yemen 100 miles away from the epicenter, so the distance a tsunami travels have not to much effect it is what the ocean is like, is it deep, or shallow water, alot of obstruensy in the water, the wave gets smaller,

So that's both Kaz and Kei okay? That's great news. My tsunami is due in a few hours but I doubt it will even be close to a meter thank goodness (in fact I suspect people will be at the beaches this morning waiting for it)
Posted By: JJLehto

Yes, like when a hurricane or nor easter hits here and people go to surf the crazy waves. One meter is not so bad but I believe the rip tide that comes with these things can be very bad. Especially if you were in the ocean waiting for it not taking it too seriously. Hope people are smart about this!

The word "awesome" has some positive connotations - I haven't seen it used in a negative sense. But still, let's keep in mind that Snowie used the word to describe the pictures of the Tsunami - not the phenomenon itself, and certainly not the effect it had on the people.

Apparently they sent out a tsunami warning in Australia.... but with the thousands islands between Tokyo and Aussieland, I doubt that they'll get anything...
New Guinea and Philippines will most likely absorb its impact well before it hits the wallabies... Kiwiland, I'm less sure
I can't imagine those Tuvalu-like atolls out in the middle of the Pacific with those 8m max altitudes...

Mike.... use your google translater
there is almost never anything positive linked with the word "awe", beit awesome or awful
only popular culture mis-use the word awesome for instilling respect from an oeuvre in someone

^ I looked it up at dictionary.com and it said that awesome often gets confused with "awful".
"Awe" is typically a form of appreciation or admiration - hence the expression "to be in awe of someone or something".
Awful is a contraction of awe full >> filled with fear >>> but it's been diverted or digressed into atrocious or bad
Awesome: impressive, imposing, terrifying

My heart goes out to the Japanese people and I have been in touch with PA friends through Facebook. Words is worthless though, but words is all I can offer.
I will publish some interviews and reviews this weekend. This from the luxury of a safe mountaintop on the other side of the world. I have some moral quandaries with going on as normal in ProgArchives this weekend. But let me make it clear that all interviews and work done this weekend will be done in deep, humble respect & love for the Japanese people. I hope and believe these sentiments are shared by other reviewers too this weekend.
Yes, this sounds stupid, but I have my moral standards and my clumsy ways to express them.

Just slightly (0.1) nastier than the Chilean quake, but seeing as how this is measuring magnitude, that's still absurdly strong. Terrible, considering the population density of the Japanese home islands.

The video I've seen is devastating, what with large ships, small buildings, and of course cars being tossed around like children's toys. I've been in a few earthquakes here, one of which had me hanging on for my life, and it was smaller in magnitude than the largest aftershocks they have seen from this one. By all means, let's hope for the best, though apparently it's too late for many.

Insane indeed.
In California, about 50 miles from where I live, docked boats were bumping into each other like bumper cars!
The sheer power is absolutely unbelievable.
I'm worried for the coasts of Chile. The waves are travelling at full force towards the coast.

News broadcasts in Australia said just now: 10 metre waves hit Japan, nuclear reactor in danger of radiation leaks, Tsunami damage in Hawaii.
The footage coming out now is incredibly upsetting, people running and buildings being toppled. The wall of water coming through swept up cars and planes like toys, and thats unnerving to see.
Its on every channel at the moment and even a Japanese broadcast/

People in other countries exactly encouraged Japan. I think that I am glad. Thank you.
The aftershock still continues to Japanese capital. Especially, a catastrophic region comes out one after another in the northern part of Japan. Physical strength is deprived surely.
Anyway, we will not give up hoping. I think that I am glad if it prays for the recovery.

Does anybody knows what is going on in the Pacific? If even the Western US coast had some causalities, I fear that small island nations such are Tuvalu and Vanuatu will be wiped off the face of Earth. Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, Pitcairn, Easter Island?!?

Let's not forget last year's Chilean quake. That one did some axis-tilting of its own.

The news on here right now states the facts:
so far 413 confirmed dead
215,000 seeking shelters
over 1,200 casualties from tsunami and quake
more than 3000 homes destroyed
more than 80 blazes and oil refinery still burning furiously
rescue operations in effect. A child rescued from flooded home.
The epicentre hit by more than 50 aftershocks, one of which is 7.4 Richter.
The tsunami continues to PACIFIC ISLANDS
no word has come out of there yet.

but amazingly, it quickly dropped out of global scrutiny, because of that mining disaster and the 33 miners to save....

Hey Kaz & Damo (and whoever else from Japan I might forget)....
nice to hear from you two.... you salvaged the most important... your lives
And if you're able to post so soon after the disaster.... it means that you've still got power supplies (and hopefully water as well)
Now of course that Nuke reactor issue is very worrysome..... and obviously it was under-estimated by the politicians who claimed at first that there was no real problems.... not that such denials will change anything to the actual problem...

I've been following the news coverage this morning. It is a little frustrating and enough to make a person angry although we are not making reference to gas prices here but people's lives. The 2nd worst nuclear accident in history? People are scared and there is talk of exposure. Now they will discuss the dangers of exposure on the news and the president will give another speech. I can't believe this. Boom! All in one shot and Japan is suffering disaster and a possible nuclear fall out. I think I will pray for the people of Japan. Watching the news just angers me.

The explosion actually appears to not have been all that serious - it all depends on whether the actual reactor vessel is still intact. Let's hope that it is - or rather that the people working to keep it intact succeed.

Yes thank you! I feel a whole lot better now But seriously, I did view that in the report and let's hope for the best. I have a tough time digesting the reality don't you? Even when I consider this kind of tragic news report to be more than expected in today's day and age.
Posted By: Mr ProgFreak

I don't know whether being a hard-nosed atheist and skeptic has anything to do with it - but I don't feel like any of this is tough to digest.
From my point of view, the world we live in is completely indifferent to human suffering. Good things happen, bad things happen, but there is no intent behind any of them - and none of them are affected by prayer or wishful thinking, and neither are the "bad" things a form of punishment.
Regarding the news reporting: My favorite source of information has been BBC - they had the most useful information and the least nuclear scare mongering. I don't mean to say that the fear of a nuclear catastrophy is irrational in this case - it isn't - but there are safety precautions to prevent a core meltdown, and until we hear otherwise, we can have some trust in them being effective.
