Here's the list:

http://www.emptywords.org/GuitarWorld_03-2004.htm - http://www.emptywords.org/GuitarWorld_03-2004.htm

"This is not a list that ranks who can play the fastest or with the most taste, feeling or technique (although many players on our list have all of those arrows in their quiver)," the editors stress in the accompanying introduction. "It is, rather, a tribute to the great men who sh*t iron and piss stainless steel razor blades, and do it every time they plug into an amplifier."

such lists are always interesting ... I particularly enjoy the fact that Michael Angelo Batio is at position 97. No offense intended ... being the 97. best guitarist in the world is something, too!

Lists like these are usually based on mainstream artists, or the
most commonly known ones. This is true becase John Petrucci
apparently "sh*ts more razor blades" then Paul Gilbert, Michael
Angelo, Satriani, Laiho, and Michael Romeo!

Jimi Hendrix, heavy metal?? I dont think he fits into that list.LOL

In my mind he is one of the ,if not THE best guitar player that ever lived

Again... I ask...

HOW does CC Deville fit this description? Was this some kind of side effect from too much hairspray or cocaine abuse?

I don't agree with putting Alex Lifeson in the 30's.  I have that issue, and I think it's blasphemy.  Putting the people who have influenced below the people who have BEEN influenced is a crime, IMO. He could hand Hammett/Hetfield (#2), Zakk Wylde (#8), and {R.I.P.} Dimebag Darrell (#9) their asses.

- these lists come and go.

The #1 is absolutely correct, and I was very pleased to find Oystein Aarseth on the list as well.

The best thing about that list is that Adam Jones is at #9

All nu-metal bands are never allowed to be on lists like this again, IMO.

Head and Munkey (WTF kind of names are those??? ) above Satch and countless other great guitarists???

Guitar magazines are worthless. It's always either jazz, praising that classic rock gods of the past, or hopelessly trying to gain attention with nu-metal and alternative bands on the cover (Korn, Nickelback anyone?)

I read Guitar World...and they always seem to cover one of a few bands; The White Stripes, Korn or Nirvana.  ALRIGHT ALREADY!!!!!!!

how is tony iommi #1? he's not that great, folks. black sabbath was a great band, but butler wrote most of the riffs. iommi was basically a less-good version of jimmy page (who SHOULD be #1)

All lists of guitarists from any genre should be topped by the Mighty Shawn Lane!

I actually think this is one of the most seeminly accurate "lists" a metal mag. has ever put out.  The list is alright with me.

But remember, this is just the opinions of a few, and I don't think it was done at random, actually, i know it wasn't.

Weren't you the guy from the other thread who said that Van Halen seem like a bad joke ... and you don't know Shawn Lane? I suggest you brush up on your knowledge of (metal) guitarists before you make such bold statements.

I used to read that rag so i have that issue. A few things that I noticed:

This was the first list by a rock guitar magazine that didn't put Hendrix at No1. I know its a metal list and all, but i thought they'd put him on top anyway.

Max Cavalera/Andreas Kisser are missing. It doesn't bother me  as I don't care much for Sepultura (let alone Soulfly), but they are famous and influential enough to have been included. I assume whoever compiled the list had simply forgotten about them.

^ consider the possibility that there might be more than 100 noteworthy guitarists ... I think that even a list of 250 would still be missing some vital names.

True, though  but I still think Sepultura's more important than Poison .

........Interesting.

I disagree with most of that list. Some names are ranked way to high, some to low, some don't belong there, IMO of course. Much of that is based off band popularity, opposed to the guitarist's talent.  Whaterver...not my list.

Yes. But that still doesn't change the fact that I've never heard of the lad. Or more accurately, have heard of him, now, but don't know in which bands ( if any ) he played in.

Plenty of info on Lane there, and I pasted in a link to a concert of his.

All lists of greatest guitarists are open to debate. It's always a challenge not to get too annoyed when you see something you don't like in there. Ah well.

Yeah. Mick Mars is better than Joe Satriani. I don't think so. Maybe in a parallel universe.

Check out digitaldreamdoor's list, by my man Troy Ponce. It's 1000X  better than  that  sh*t, though it only focuses on technical skill, which isn't a bad thing.

I seriously disagree with that list. Tony is a very good guitarist but he has nothing on someone like Vai or even Hendrix!
