Can't help but be excited awaiting the new release however I wonder what impact the loss of Portnoy will have on the music. Will be interesting to see how it turns out.

So excited...its so great when one of your favourite bands releases a new album. And from the title...song are gonna be about Portnoy. In my head, from the song titles, I think the album may have a similar vein to Octavarium being more digestable and contempary, yet show progression from Black Clouds. Tomorrow more details will be announced, which may be the times and the cover

(As a joke, my brother said that the album cover will be a bunch of pics of Portnoy mixed together to make a bigger picture of Portnoy haha)

Awesome.  It sounds more progressive and less like straight-forward metal, but I won't get my hopes up.

Sounds decent. I'll be buying it and listening to it on day one and not one day earlier...

^I would prefer if no track exceeds 9-10 minutes... I'm not really a lover of gigantic prog-metal or prog epics. It's difficult to find a time to listen to them for me.

i know what you mean, and with 9 tracks I feel we'll get a nice mix of lengths. As much as I love BC&SL, it's almost like you had to plan when you could listen to it, having 4 very long songs on it.

The Shaman's Trance interests me, as well as the last 2 songs, based on their history.

It will turn out to be one long composition made up of these 9 movements and each will be 14-25min long, the title is actually telling the future of this release.....On Sept 12th the song list change will be announced.

I don't have any hopes for the album, but I am interested in a sans-Portnoy DT. Maybe both DT and Opeth will be going light on the metal.

Oh and the song titles are horrid as well.

I will be cautiously optimistic thanks to their new drummer, but my hopes are not very high for this album LOL

I love how everyone has such extreme opinions about all this crap.

What terrible fake artwork! What hideous song titles!

Then you have the DT fanboys which are what they always are.

It's all so ridiculous.

My only real hope is that DT got a cover artist that actually knows how to use Photoshop, not just some dude who really likes likes contrast and whose only book is Symbolism and You: A Modern Artist's Guide to Being Deep.

This year is the perfect storm of progressive rock fan melodrama. New Yes album has certain unnamed forum members going around bawwing about Jon Anderson not being there in every other thread, everyone else is crying because Opeth grew out of being repetitive and instead will focus on being mediocre, and Steven Wilson is still getting sh*t for Fear of a Blank Planet.

You upset, prog fans?

I understand that Mike Mangini would be drumming for DT. And you may be aware that he played with the thrash metal band Annihilator. So, he is not less metal than Portnoy !

A Dramatic Turn of Events is available as a $105 special edition boxset...

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/dreamtheaterdeluxe/?utm_source=Exact%2BTarget&utm_medium=EX%2B%28D2C%2BDT%29&utm_campaign=EX%2B%28D2C%2BDT%29" rel="nofollow - http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/dreamtheaterdeluxe/?utm_source=Exact%2BTarget&utm_medium=EX%2B(D2C%2BDT)&utm_campaign=EX%2B(D2C%2BDT)

I definitely won't be picking it up because the special features are a lithograph of the bad album artwork, a dvd of already-released drummer auditions, and an instrumental version of the album.  The turntable mat seems to be the only worthwhile feature.

I'll definitely be sticking to the standard edition.

As for the album, I own most of their back catalog on CD but haven't purchaced a single DT album since Octavarium (and I only got that one because it was being autographed by the band). I prefer to stream their music off Spotify instead.

I looked at this yesterday too.......very bad marketing ploy, including the "Willie Wonka" golden ticket search. $105 for material that makes no sense to have, an instrumental version?? Why?? Lithograph....are u really thinking I'm gonna hang that on my wall so my wife can yell at me everytime she sees that 3rd grade CGI in a frame...on her wall??
Might be worth $50.....

I would probably take the vinyl version with the turntable mat.......That's it.

On the Backs of Angels is very average song, really not too much going on there. I've listened to it many times over the past week.
I will be SHOCKED if it comes anywhere close to Scenes or even SDoIT.

Have you heard the teasers? Based on those, I would say On The Backs Of Angels is probably the least best song on the album.

I don't trust any of those "samples" unless they're from DT's channel or Roadrunner's channel. The band, Petrucci in particular, is really hyping this album as being very proggy, with a mix of metal, and even some jazzy moments as he said in an interview

We know for sure it's going to more interesting then 90% of the music that is made today. That's what's important... And it can't be as bad as Black Clouds...

I thought Black Clouds was an improvement over 8vm and Systematic Chaos overall musically. The only thing that kind of drags it down is Mike Portnoy who didn't seem as inspired as everyone else (ironically), or at least wasn't doing anything special. It's also the only album where you literally can't hear John Myung except in one part of The Count of Tuscany before the atmospheric guitar solo and guitar swells.

Doing a million side-projects at once PLUS having your main band at the same time does not helps creativity-wise.

And I don't believe I actually dislike anything by DT, the only album which still leaves me disappointed is FII.

One thing I do detest is the hyping, it most probably leads to disappointments (PS: see Porcupine Tree's latest for more information on this subjetc TongueLOL).

More like the whole situation with MP leaving was overdramatized and now people have some stubborn preconception in their head of how it's going to sound so much different than before.

" http://www.prog-sphere.com/2011/07/11/resurfacing-an-interview-with-james-labrie/" rel="nofollow - Here is the truth of the matter: The main composers of this band have always been John and…

Petrucci…

Yes, let’s make sure of it – John Petrucci and Jordan have been the main contributors with riffs and stuff."

"We are a progressive band, but our core, our basic sound is metal and rock."

I didn't say it was going to be a completely different sound or anything, just that they did things differently to make the album (different song structures, writing without a drummer, etc.) and from the teasers Ive heard, there's is some new stuff. I agree with OTBOA, but Petrucci himself said that On The Backs Of Angels was more like a "DT song", but the other ones sound refreshing - aka - not the usual DT fare.

I'm listening Adrenaline Mob, I think that MP are enjoying with the music and has left the physical and mental preparation before the gigs that requires DT.
