What you think which Pink Floyd songs are underrated and never caught real attention but are very good piece of work?
You can name few songs not just one, and you can name songs from any Pink Floyd phase.

On the Turning Away
Yet Another Movie/Round and Around
Terminal Frost

In my opinion, if Dogs of War wasn't on A Momentary Lapse of Reason, it would be a very easy 4/5. Now, it's probably a high 3.5/5.

Is "Echoes" from "Meddle" underrated?   I don't hear it discussed much, and I consider it to be a masterpiece.

"Dogs" from "Animals" is another favorite of mine.  I rather believe that "Animals" is something of a forgotten album, unless that is just my perspective.

Nah. It has a rather huge following

I would say that Atom Heart Mother is rather underrated. Maybe not on the archives, but the album got pretty much universally bad reviews elsewhere

The Wish you were here album gets some mixed reviews, but I think it's great. Obscured by Clouds is amazing and really should be looked at again. See Emily Play's actually a pretty fun tune, very Beatles-esque. Interstellar Overdrive is also very awesome, but not the first thing people think of when they think, "Pink Floyd"

Remember A Day, Paintbox and Summer '68 are three of my favourite Floyd tracks and I think they are massively under rated.  There was something about Rick's songs, quite mounrful and introspective, but beautiful.

I should think so, and it is a great track. I also agree with the post re Final Cut. Although essentially a Waters solo piece, under the Floyd name, it is a great album and statement.

Good choice matey as I've always loved these track to bits and yes, Rick's songs have a eerie callow wisdom about them that's genuinely moving. Great lyrics to boot.

I agree with Gareth about the Richard Wright compositions. But I would also add the Ummagumma studio album (except The Grand Vizier's Garden Party).

I think Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict is one of the most underrated Floyd Songs.

Another one: The studio version of Careful with That Axe, Eugene, which is unjustly overshadowed by the live versions.

I really love Have a cigar from Wish you were here, for me one of better Floyd songs, Gilmour guitar rocks on this song.

Also Summer 68 from AHM, where you can see all R.Wright talent but, he was always overshadowed by Waters and Gilmour, there was also similar situation in Yes with Rick Wakeman.

Also Alans Psychedelic Breakfast is for me a little masterpiece, song which never caught too much attention.

Not being a HARDCORE Pink Floyd fan, I can say I'm terribly dissapointed at "A Saucerful Of Secrets"... ALL those songs had a great potential but musically they just sound a bit dull... ._. So I won't call any of them underrated, although "Remember A Day" might come close to it. I'm also not a fan of aMLoR, "Dogs of War" sucks imo, and I never checked out "Final Cut" because I honestly hated "The Division Bell"

With that being said...:
1. The Trial - seriously brilliant song, and it's totally overlooked;
2. Fearless - yep,I think it's great;
3. Atom Heart Mother - Very original, although they FRIGGIN OVEREXTENDED IT... if it was like 15 minutes long it would be awesome:
4. Any Colour You Like - great instrumental imho;
5. Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk - let the flames begin;

A lot of stuff from More ( Main theme, Cymbaline, Cirrus minor, Green is the colour, Quicksilver ) Fat old sun, Summer 68, most of Rick early tracks , Alan psychedelic breakfast, Embryo, some tracks from Obscured by clouds, Julia dream , the narrow way, Sysyphus, Let there be more light.....there are so many because too many poeple are only keen on Dark side and Wish you were here though they are great albums of course

I would say that the soundtracks they did for the movies More and Obscured by Clouds are underrated because they didn't get as much attention as Dark Side or The Wall but, to me, those soundtracks are some of the best work Floyd ever did

I was just about to say Embryo, but in all fairness it has never been released outside the BBC sessions and other bootleg recordings. Brilliant track - where the Floyd comes close to symphonic kraut.

One of my favorite songs which never gets any notice is Biding my time from the Relics record. Floyd meets New Orleans old school jazz orchestra.

Ummagumma studio album is nice piece of work, also people must realize that all expiriment which Floyd did came to making something so gold like Dark side of moon, Pink Floyd is band which had normal natural development. And phase Dark side - Wish you were here - Animals - Wall is best phase, but without Meddle,Ummagumma,Atom heart mother it will never be that way.

Also Ummagumma live album is for me one of best psychedelic/prog live albums, maybe better than Live at Pompei which has cult status to Floyd fans.

But you know Ummagumma live album is cult too it's a Floyd classic, i remember at the time i was a teen listening to that album in my room with friends ( and incense LOL ) it was something new, something very special, yes the four pieces are high times in the pop music story, no doubt

I agree with you there, that track is interesting in their output, wish they'd expanded this feel a couple more times in their career. Not complaining, but I did enjoy Biding My Time, sounds like they're having fun

I can think of several Pink Floyd songs that I love and don't get much attention from the band members or fans in general, at least as far as I've seen:
- Julia Dream.
- Let there be more Light.
- Remember a Day.
- The Narrow Way (Specially part 3... and part 2 is pretty cool too).
- Mudmen.
- When the Tigers Broke Free.
- The Hero's Return (parts 1 & 2 together, only released as a single, I believe, the one released on the album is far too short to be actually enjoyed, it rather leaves me frustrated).
- The Fletcher Memorial Home.
- The Final Cut (the song).
- On the Turning Away.
- Yet Another Movie.
- Terminal Frost.
- Marooned.
- A Great Day for Freedom.

Though there are more songs that I like that don't receive so much attention, but I guess these are my very favourites. And some others that I love and that some may consider un-appreciated, but that I actually think they receive enough love. Oh, and a special mention for "Murder", by David Gilmour solo, which is a really great song that doesn't get much attention either (the live version is really great, I wish it would be officially released).

At least in PA, I'm under the impression that Echoes, Dogs, and Animals in general, are very well apreciated. Echoes would very likely win almost any poll about Pink Floyd songs. And Animals would beat just about any album, and end up in a very close competition against Dark Side and Wish you Were here.

Very beautiful song too. Though the live versions of the 70's were far better than the studio (not so "beautiful", but with some really cool extended solos). The live version Gilmour did on his las tour was also very good, with the guitar solo extended (though not as much as on the 70's), and with an updated more polished sound... it would actually have fitted very well on "The Division Bell" or "On an Island". And there's also the acoustic version on the DVD "David Gilmour on Concert"... though unfortunatley that doesn't have the guitar solo at all.

Posted By: Dellinger
Date Posted: June 24 2011 at 22:28
Oh, another special mention to the version of Wright's "Breakthrough" played on "David Gilmour on Concert", sung by Wright himself... really beautiful, much better than the original (for me), and with Gilmour's guitars and backing vocals, the female chorus, and Dick Parry on Sax, it almost sounds like a genuine Pink Floyd song.

Five tracks from the Saucerful of Secrets album come immediately to mind:

Saucerful of Secrets (very different to the Ummagumma version)
Let There be More Light
Corporal Clegg
Remember a Day
Jugband Blues

Also;
See Emily Play
If
Summer 68
Atom Heart Mother
Welcome to the Machine

I would have said Fat Old Sun once, but it seems to have become quite fashionable in recent years.

Fearless is probably under-rated but i think it is spoilt by the football crowd chanting at the end.  If Waters was determined to include this on Meddle it should have been stuck on the end of Seamus which was already a novelty track.

It is a very coherent composition quite amusingly warped towards the end.  Although we like to compare prog epics to the best of classical music, very few show the sophisticated play upon themes and variations that AHM does.  (PR scores again with Shine On You Crazy Diamond, btw.)

I love 'Pigs' too, probably my favourite track on the album - for its atmosphere and outro amongst other moments. Although compositionally I still find 'Dogs' more interesting and with 'Sheep' it's nice to have the band pick up the pace a little, but 'Pigs' just has always been a fav, especially lyrically.

Bike - I love Syd´s lyrical performance there. Peter Gabriel has always been at the top, when it comes to epitomizing and ridiculing the English ways, but I think Syd was there first, and he did one hell of a job. Funny and finger pointing mirror - he was.
I really love that guy.

In a strange sort of way - I completely agree with you, although I wouldn´t rate it as high as Animals, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother or Wish you were here. Just goes to show how individual music is, and how weird and inhuman it is to put a number/verdict on music you adore...

Hmm.
I do remember that since the release of Dark Side of the Moon
Floyd weren't underground anymore, cause from then on they attracted general attention.
So underrated songs would more or less come from the phase
before the release of DSOTM.
Wonderful, but not fully appreciated imo are the lesser
known songs from Saucerful of Secrets like Let there be more
light, Remember a Day, Corporal Clegg or Jugband Blues (Syd's
last effort with the Floyd).

Have a nice day
wishes

Was running a poll just a few days ago, it was ranked nr. 1 1971 track on PA, wouldent call that underrating.

Pow R. Toc H.

Not sure if it's exactly underrated, but I don't always hear about it when the debut is mentioned

I'll second "On the Turning Away"  It's been my favorite Floyd song since I heard it over 20 years ago.

"Learning to Fly"

AMLOR is my second favorite album after DSOTM

I think AMLOR is a great album too.
Might have been recived a lot better, had it not come out, right after the dramatic split.

I also like AMLOR pretty much (and mostly "On the Turning Away" (though I prefer slightly the live verson on Delicate Sound of Thunder). However, I like even better The Division Bell.

I first heard it also on DSoT, excellent version.

Don't know about underrated, but Fearless is one of my favourite PF songs, though that might be because I'm a Liverpool fanWink

Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast is pretty overlooked, I think. I love it, it's in my top 5 for Floyd. A Saucerful Of Secrets and Sysphus also come to mind for underrated PF songs.

I think that "Have a Cigar" is an underrated one.
I like it best of them all !!!

I don't really like "Have a Cigar" so much, but the version played on the tribute album produced by Billy Sherwood is really cool... kind of more hard rock, with more guitars and less keyboards... somehow I feel it suits the song better.

I'd tip Have a Cigar too, one of my fav Roy Harper vocals

Yep. I think that Harper's voice gives a lot to it.

Good singer, really. The Same Old Rock is another of his performances that I really like

i'd say "Alan's psychedelic breakfast"
in some part of the long instrumental part there is a voice says "uzaylı seni seviyorum" in Turkish, which means "i love you alien"
it was really shocking to figure it out!

Two Suns in the Sunset, The Gunner's Dream, Wot's...Uh, the Deal, A Pillow of Winds, Fletcher Memorial Home, Nobody's Home, maybe Mudmen. In general, both Obscured by Clouds and The Final Cut are left forgotten. I could never do that.

As is Atom Heart Mother and Summer of '69.  AHM is tragically overlooked in total.

I particularly agree with Mudmen... really love that song. The Fletcher Memorial Home is also great... and even more from The Final Cut is the title track; I guess that one could have been a great single.

Poles apart - my joint fav track along with High hopes off The Division Bell.

I suppose any of the early ones, especially the ones from Ummagumma.

The Narrow Way.... Ummagumma ('69)
Sysuphys... Ummaguma
Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk... The Piper at the Gates of Dawn ('67)
See-Saw... A Saucerful of Secrets ('68)
Burning Bridges... Obscured by Clouds ('72)

I depends who's rating it; if it's the radio DJ, then the list could go on for ever- there are even songs from the mainstream years that haven't been given enough credit: Dogs, Welcome to the Machine...
