two legends and pioneers in rock/psych/blues/pop/prog/ music, who started abruptly at the same time who have influenced everyone in their time and after, with thier playing, they are by far not the most technical but hell they had the TONE everyone was after (spessialy Clapton), only Hendrix is ranked over them mainstreemly when it comes to importants on guitar,

so who is your pick, Tongue,  also interested in guitarists voice in this, who have influenced you the most of these two guys

Tough one for sure but I picked Clapton........I love his sound from early days to now. Both amazing guitarists and writers........some of the best for sure.

Townshend.   Clapton has always been pretty boring for me, save the brief period in Cream.

Townshend. Both are great, but Clapton sometimes bores me and his later solo work never did much for me.

I played guitar in a few Glasgow pub bands during the 80's (I was never better than mediocre) and am disappointed to say that although I intuitively knew Clapton was the superior technician, it was Pete who fired my imagination and stirred my young 20 something Lemming blood all those years ago. Yep, it's my loss I guess but Clapton has always bored me rigid.

Both for me, I can't imagine rock without either of them.

^I feel similarly. Musically, I'd take Clapton, but Pete had a vision that either swept you up in a torrent or capsized you at the shore. I guess my pick is Clapton for how subtle he could be. I have the lead electric line to Wonderful Tonight in my head all the time. Can't say the same about Love Reign O'er Me.

Clapton for lead guitar (Townshend was v. good on everything but lead). Twonshend for composition. The Who for being one in several million. Derek and The Dominos for being the most original blues band ever.

Townshend ofr breaking a guitar over friendand addict Clapton's head in frustration at EC's then lackadaisical approach. Clapton for giving good concert but (IMHO) mainly shy to dull studio performances (nothing since 461 Ocean Boulevard). Townshend for getting togther with Gilmour ...but a point or two off for that supremely dire Who's Last 'live' album. The opposite of Live At Leeds... with which album  has Eric has his eqivalent in the Dominos live album... EC for his work with George Harrison... Both for the Secret Policeman's Ball.... honours even.

Anyway it's Page and Zeppelin for me...Wink

Pete - the soulful idea man
Clapton - the soulful player
Page - the pretentious pothead moron that had lots of experience - and used it to make the same smelly cock rock for years...soulfully.

Clapton had his moments (not many though, relative to the length of his career), but Townshend as a guitar player connected with me a higher percentage of the time.  which isn't to say he couldn't be dull too.

Pete.

I didn't get a chance to vote in this poll being new to the forums, but I gotta go with Clapton. I dig a lot of Clapton's music with Cream as well as what he did with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. I like the Who as well and I think Townsend is a great player, I just like Clapton more.

Unfortunately, I am very ignorant when it comes to Pete Townshend's solo career (he is not as exposed as Eric Clapton in the media). However, recently I stumbled upon a few songs on youtube and they are very decent pop/AOR and most to my taste than Eric Clapton's stuff (except the excellent 'behind the sun' which is somewhat TOTO-related, with Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro guesting).

Eric had Jeff Porcaro, Pete had Simon Phillips !

Short term memory loss is starting to turn long term.  I was like, "Yeah, great poll."  Then I voted for Pete again and that "already voted" box popped up.  I even commented!  Gotta stop eating those frosted flakes.
