Subject: A Poll For Those Who Know After Crying

Welcome to another round of the Post 70's World Cup!

For this one and only occasion I've decided to change the title of the poll.

I figured out that naming it Porcupine Tree vs. After Crying would attract lots of PT fanboys who might not even know there's a band called After Crying, and yet vote for their much beloved band.

In order to at least try to avoid in part this unfair situation, with this change of title I'm trying to narrow the voters into:

- Those who know After Crying

and,

- Those who without knowing them were curious enough to see what this poll was about

Besides, those who are familiar with the hungarian band are much likely to have heard Porcupine Tree, so I don't think this is unfair for Steven Wilson's band.

Anyway, I still think PT will take over this poll easily, nevermind the way it was set.

I know I might get a lot of s**t for this, but what the hell, let's spice up things a little bit.

World Cup so far:

Deadline for this poll: November 1st

Plenty members unfamiliar with one of the two bands were reasonable enough to say that they will not vote. Up to now, many (if not all) of the bands advanced based on the scoreline on top, without any means of telling who were all the ones voting, what they voted, why they voted that or how fair their reasoning was, so I don't see why bother now.

Porcupine Tree for me. After Crying's first two albums are excellent but PT is one of my all time favs.

Even if I love the early PT, After Crying are one of my all time fav bands.

I'd say all of them, but I have a little preference for De Profundis and Megalazzottag. Also Overnight Music is a good choice.

Tough one. I like both bands, but I'll give the edge to Porcupine Tree for the variety of styles in their whole catalogue.

Wow. Interesting results so far. Perhaps this is skewing the poll in favor of AC?

Also, no vote from me. I don't know AC.

I love both band's music, though quite different (although both developed and changed their sound throughout the years).
I'll give my vote to After Crying.

I agree. I would also toss a vote to their live album Struggle For Life which is wonderful as well. (And works as a good compliation of AC, at least of their middle/late period)

Yeah, I think this is a bit unfair. I understand why Morningrise did this, but I think it's making it even more unfair than if it was normal.

Also, for the record, I think it's annoying how PT monopolizes so many polls.

To me this is just wrong,it's tainted the whole process.
Okay this is from a PT fanboy sure but this isn't fair at all.

I don't really mind thid decision, if Porcupine Tree falls out of the polls, everything would become so much more interesting, however, it might end up with Dream Theater just walking throught the rest of the matches. I don't really mind PT or DT winning this, but it would be far more interesting if they didn't make it to the finals.

This is really thankless work, a creating of polls, isn't it? If Morningrise would make a poll named "Porcupine Tree vs. After Crying", the winner would be quite obvious but many complainers would advert to unfair contest. In this case, there is a bunch of another complainers who see a kind of favouritism behind it. So, what to choose?Confused

I agree, but it still is unfair.

All imho:

It would be more fair if this had been done from the beginning. With each poll title mentioning only the underdog. Ofcourse the knowledge would quickly spread among the frequent visitors of pa. Now it just seems like favouritism.

-------------
Thanks !! Your topics always so good and informative. I like you talk.

I'm aware of what I've done and I knew this wouldn't seem right to a lot of people.

But try to understand that I didn't want a poll where voters knew only 1 of the competitors. That was even more unfair to my eyes. At the moment the poll is 14-12 in favour of After Crying and I'm pretty sure that all the people who voted knew both contestants. Is that favoritism? I don't think so.

If I had done this the way I had been doing it, the scoreboard probably would have shown a massive victory of Porcupine Tree filled with meaningless votes of people interested only on PT reaching the finals.

I didn't do this before because it occured to me just recently, and I figured out that the only match that would need this idea would be this one. The monster versus the total underdog.

To those who still think this is unfair, you could post something in one of the old polls of the tournament to make people realise that the competition is taking place on this current poll. I could not prevent that.

Finally, try to understand that running a poll for 5 months and counting can be a little boring, and innovation sometimes is needed.

To be honest, I didn't think After Crying would be winning.

What I wonder is the reaction of people on the next match, when they see that Porcupine Tree has already played.
So far the people on this poll have been very polite, even when they didn't agree with what I've done. But if Porcupine Tree finally is eliminated, my god, I won't be able to make another poll on PA ever again LOL

If you want to know if I do have a favorite, look at my nickname and think again. Anyway, I don't think DT will go much further, as they have as much detractors as fans. They had trouble beating Talk Talk, whom I love, but is not a strong opponent in my opinion.

I'm quite bad at Opeth (even if I have seen them live 3 times and another upcoming concert) so I didn't know that they have an album called Morning Rise. Now I do. I could take the opportunity and ask for a good 2nd album to buy by them, I have Still Life (and it was good enough to get me to go and see them 3 times). So... what's your recomendation?

LOL

Once I close this poll I'll probably change the title to the usual one. Just to prove 2 points:

1- After I do that I'm sure there will be a flood of votes for PT.
2- Lots of people don't read what's happening on these polls. They are mere clickers.

People who know After Crying, also know Porcupine Tree, and half of them voted for the latter.

But it's ok. Perhaps I've touched a nerve with my "proving points" comment. If so, I'm sorry to anyone who felt attacked, and I won't do what I'd say I will.

why would they click on this poll??

As I said before, I knew this wouldn't seem right to a lot of people. I'm aware this is not completely fair and I understand your reasons.

But still, I think that naming this poll Porcupine Tree vs. After Crying would attract a much larger number of people who don't know After Crying, and vote anyway for PT than the ones who are being left out because they don't like After Crying.

I don't see it that way. But I guess we will go round in circles on this discussion.

I honestly don't care who wins this competition. I just enjoy the process of making it, the debates and things like that. I surely do have favorites, but it won't matter a lot to me if Opeth is eliminated by The Tangent on the next round. If that happens, well, I'm sorry for them.

I also thought it was a good idea to innovate a little just for a change. Obviously, you didn't think the same

After this poll closes and you rename the title, I just bet that there will be a complete landslide of PT votes.

I also bet most of them will be from people that have never heard After Crying, but since most of them also wont post, there's no way to prove it.

Sticking the unknown underdog against the steamroller that is PT, who have gained the most votes in just about every poll they've ever been in on this site for the last 5 years, was always going to end up with a foregone conclusion within a few hours of the poll opening.

Would someone post some of After Crying's best songs? Might as well for us who don't know them very well.

In defense of the whiners. They would not whine if they did not care.

Anyone feel like starting a similar poll where bands can only participate if their number of ratings is below a maximum. That way only underdogs participate. Or some mathematicaly inclined could invent a system that handicaps popular bands. Something like 3 votes for Porcupine Tree equal 1 for After Crying.

Allow me to apologize for any past & future whining from myself. You're doing a great job. Chapeau!
If fun is the purpose than this is achieved.

Thanks !! Your topics always so good and informative. I like you talk.

well ... now thanks to Anthony's poll

we know that Hoyry-Kone is more popular than Genesis with people that are interested in a Hoyry-Kone poll

This is interesting .... no doubt....

but does not tell us the whole story..... does it??

I hope I've introduced somebody to the After Crying. For those who have liked them let me suggest the Czech "Collegium Musicum" and the Romanian Phoenix , too.

There's a lot of hidden treasures behind the iron curtain.

The experiment lasted only 10 hours, with just 14 votes and a difference of only 2 for Hoyry Kone. That's not very representative.

Anyway, Porcupine Tree advanced to the next round, so I guess that people interested in an After Crying poll still prefered Porcupine Tree over them.

Fushta!!

(those who have seen Dracula: Dead And Loving It might understand this last word LOL)

You assumed that everyone who's heard After Crying has also heard PT, even though you changed the title to nullify non-objectivity, you just skewed the poll in a different way.

I like PT for sure,  but the whole idea of running a tournament with the same standard title in approx 29 of 30 of the polls and a totally different title that just happens to include one of the favourites to win the tournament strikes me as unfair.

I would have voiced the same opinion even if the band being singled out was one I didn't like

If PT would have been eliminated, then the tournament would have been ruined, because you never would know who should have won.

The same could be said if  Opeth was singled out.   The tournament would be ruined..... which would be sad..... even though I don't like Opeth
