Subject: Dream Theater nominated for Grammy award

From Dream Theater's facebook page:

"2011 has been quite an amazing year for us. We watched 'A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS'—our eleventh studio album—enter the Top Ten in 14 countries around the world including the U.S. And now we land our first-ever Grammy nomination [for the song "On The Backs of Angels" in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category]. It’s the icing on the cake--we’re honored and thrilled, no doubt about it. It took us a while to receive this Grammy attention--and we’ve done it on our own terms musically, so it feels particularly sweet. What keeps you going as a musician is the love and support from the fans--they are always there for us on this crazy adventure. So we give them a big shout-out as we celebrate our Grammy nomination. See you all on the road…and let's all keep dreaming big.”

I don't really care about the Grammy's, they're worse for representing the art than the Academy Awards are for representing films. But the fact that a prog band got nominated for (what used to be) a more popular category, is cool in and of itself.

Comments?

And it's not even their best song.

I wonder wat Mike Portnoy thinks of this.
I'm always surprised how many people have actually heard of Dream Theater. Their music is so uncompromisingly radio-unfriendly: very heavy and long tracks.

By the way: this is no challenge to anyone to come up with bands that are more radio-unfriendly.
I am speaking in relative terms. And I'm sure anyone here can.

Thanks !! Your topics always so good and informative. I like you talk.

Probably an imposter. I don't know what DTF is.

Let me guess

Death To Frogs?

I think most people that are into any kind of rock music, are at least aware of Dream Theater. They're much more well known than Porcupine Tree or The Mars Volta in terms of modern bands.

It'd be nice to see them win.

I might just tune in to the Grammy's this year just to see if they win it or not.

I honestly hope they win.  The music they have put out over the years has been of a consistent high quality to my ears.  Too bad Portnoy couldn't have been a part of this.

The Mars Volta won the best hard rock/metal grammy in 2009 for "Wax Simulacra." Why isn't there a grammy for Prog?

Recent Music Acquisitions:
Johnny Marr-"The Messenger"
Steven Wilson-"The Raven that Refused to Sing"
Fish-"Sunsets on Empire"

I can bet everything that the least "hard" act on the list will get the award, so it's between Foo Fighters and Sum 41. As Foo Fighters are more popular, they will win. At least they have eventually released a few enjoyable songs.

Too bad they can't be given nominated for a such like A Change of Seasons or Metropolis pt 1. Those are magical beyond words. But nevertheless On the backs of Angels was still a nice DT tune.

We can save those for real prog awards or something.

I'm not a fan, nor a hater, but hats off to them all the same. Beer
If not hats off at least a smiley beer toast or whatever the hell that is.
The one thing you can count on is that if a prog artist gets an award for something it wont be for anything prog. Wink

Unless it's one of those technical categories award, like Best Recording Engineer.

Posted By: SMSM
Date Posted: December 06 2011 at 17:53
Just one example - After seeing Santana get multiple Grammys for the pop Supernatural and were ignored for far better high quality recordings, getting a grammy or even being nominated may be considered an insult and a slight on the recording nominated.

If there was a prog catagory, Asia would win all the time

Like to add, I supported Jethro Tull winning over Metallica, Crest of a Knave was very close to Led Zepplin stuff, while Justice for All borded on punk

Silly goose.....Prog can't win a grammy, only artists can win a grammy.

I hope Dream Theater wins the award, sure its not their best. But the album has been their best charting album and that is what has gotten them on the ballot and the Grammy committee attention.

I like Dream Theater

I even think that DT's nominated song is better than Mastodon's Curl of the Burl. While the latter is good, it's nowhere near the best tracks on the album.
