I'm putting a list together of my top 10 Epics (over 15 minutes) ever. I tend towards triumphant or haunting neo-prog so i know i'm gonna hear a lot of noise in this room but well...

1. Pink Floyd - Dogs - (The most overlooked Pink Floyd Song and perhaps their best)
2. Yes - Close To The Edge (Best bass line ever)
3. Genesis - Suppers Ready (Most Haunting song except for maybe Entangled)
4. Marillion - This Strange Engine (Most Beautiful Guitar Solo)
5. Edison's Children - The Awakening (Most Triumphant and Most Intense Guitar Outro... what Near The End by David Gilmour should have been... Also the Slow Burn Section  in the middle reminds me of many old Genesis & Yes Songs)
6. Yes - Gates of Delirium (The buildup to "Soon" and that guitar just takes me to another place)
7. Fish - Plague of Ghosts (Raingods With Zippos) - Perfect sequence of smaller songs into one final masterpiece
8. Genesis - Cinema Show - (2nd Best Haunting 12 string Guitar work after Suppers Ready)
9. Marillion - The Invisible Man (Marillion brought back the epic prog song in an absolutely amazing way. Perhaps the very best that Neo-Prog would ever get)
10. Transatlantic - The Whirlwind (Is It Really Happening makes Pink Floyd jealous)

okay... there's mine... don't be hating...

Thanks Snow... I just always seems that Animals is always overlooked. I can see why because it is the least commercial of all Pink Floyd albums and maybe the least accessible. Still I think it is their best.

yeah but I guess i'm sort of differentiating... there is the older "psychedelic" floyd that comes out of the Syd Barrett era of which you are talking about. I guess I am referring to the post DSOTM era where Pink Floyd elevated itself to a worldwide phenomenon. I should have been more specific I guess.

One interesting thing about the new Edison's Children (Pete Trewavas featuring Marillion) album. Much of the original tracks were done at Lead Singer Eric's Black Dirt Studio's which is owned by Brad Morrison... the original founder, manager and record company owner of the band Phish, where they did quite a few projects. You can almost hear the history of that old barn on the recordings.

Saw The Whirlwind by the way in New York with Pete Trewavas and  Mike Portnoy at the helm... What an incredible live show... to see Evermore done live with such precision was jaw dropping.  I wish I knew more of the Flower Kings Music, so I will start with the longs you mentioned... Glad to see you agree with me on my Yes choices...  Hope you listen to Pete Trewavas' new Edison's Children project as it is so different from his past music (Eric Blackwood is more of a Pink Floyd meets Tool kinda guy) and add that to your list. It is my favorite album of the decade so far.

Atom Heart Mother was a Number One hit album, and all Pink Floyd's albums were top ten hits.

I know it was. But it is a less commercial sounding album...especially these days.

If someone had told me, twenty years ago, that Clint Mansell would go on to produce what he does now, I would have laughed my @rse off. I used to love PWEI, but never took them very seriously.

I need to hear more of what he's doing these days. I'm intrigued. Didn;t he do the soundtrack, or some of it for the film Pi?

Magma - Kohntarkosz
Magma - Theusz Hamtaahk
Magma (or Jannick Top, take your pick) - De Futura
VdGG - Plague of Lighthouse Keepers
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Mike Oldfield - Amarok
Henry Cow - Living in the Heart of the Beast
Kayo Dot - On Limpid Form

(...counts on fingers)

Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Osore-zan
Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Dou no Kenbai

probably bad recommendations for a neo-prog fan, i don't even think any of the songs are particularly well-mastered x3

if i had to pick stuff by ten different groups then kick out some of the duplicates and replace with:
Aksak Maboul - Cinema
Zaar - Sefir
Fantomas - Delirium Cordia
Olive Mess - Stefan, the Shepherd Boy

looking back I guess it's weird that there's no Univers Zero or Art Zoyd, or Shub... I can't remember what they did to annoy me
