The Musical Box, as much as I like Starless I just feel they've never pulled the ending off live or in studio, its just not chaotic or explosive enough.

that's hard !! I picked up Starless only because of the production is better ( and maybe because of those 2 first second with mellotron so amazing haha )

Musical Box by a little, the ending of Box is one of the best end sections of any song. Both are terrific.

I love the two songs, but Starless wins, i think

The Musical Box beyond doubt. Indisputably one of the greatest tracks in all of progressive rock. Far more complex and interesting than Starless with tension and a climax that Crimson could never match, and Hackett's guitar playing makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Frankly, the less said about Starless the better. That's 11 minutes of my life I won't get back; I just can't listen to Fripp's repetitive and tuneless guitar playing any more. The first and last minutes have some interest; that's it.

Good match up. I picked Starless because it still makes my hair stand on end. The drama of Box has gotten slightly old to me, and musically the band were still a year or two away from their peak. Still a stone cold classic of course, and guaranteed to blow neophytes out of their chairs.

I would have thought Starless would be winning this... there was a time I thought that song was almost unbeatable within this forum. However, I do prefer Starless (specially live). On the other hand, if it had been set against Firth of Fifth... that would have been another story.

The Musical Box. One of the best of Genesis.

Starless by a country mile for me; just perfection IMO. The Musical Box would be great if it didn't sound like s**t. Horrible production.

Pretty much this. Both are damn near perfect songs though.

As much as i love The Musical Box, it hasn't aged as well as Starless.
Off of the same album, i think Fountain of Salmacis is better.
Like Dr. Prog said, it can has a sense of predictability, when it comes to the heavy/soft changes. I still love it though.

This isn't one of them.

The Musical Box is one of my favourite Genesis tracks, but I much prefer Starless. There is something deeply powerful about Starless, that the Musical Box lacks.

Both are absolutely great. But Starless wins by just a little.

Starless is fairly good although I'm not really blown away like most people in here. I probably like the instrumental version more actually.

The Musical Box is great, one of Genesis' most rocking tunes, but...I still have to go with Starless.
Besides, Starless has better lyricsWink

to me Musical Box is one of the greatest prog tracks, with one of the greatest end sequences, ever, and I'm not a huge Genesis fan.  In fact, I prefer KC overall, mostly on the basis of their earliest classics, but, like Hercules said, the first few minutes of Starless and the end are enough for me.  So Musical Box all the way

"Starless" is downright sublime, and one of my top 10 favorite songs ever recorded.  "The Musical Box," while wonderful in its own right, doesn't even come close.

Starless, just because I feel that it has more of a sense of movement and progression, from the soft opening section to the two note guitar solo to the epic ending....also, Starless has one of my favorite endings ever to a song...Musical Box is great too, probably one of my favorite Genesis tracks

I always believed that Musical Box is the best song ever.

It has everything,

1.- Great lyrics and concept
2.- Excellent melody in various passages
3.- Radical changes
4.- The best finale in history

This song describes Prog, the production is not perfect, but I thought we were here for the music.

Starless is great (One of the few King Crimson songs I like apart from ItCotCK), but doesn't come remotely close.

My 2 cents

Iván

I enjoy Starless more than anything by Genesis. It might have been a closer match against Supper's, and Musical v. Lizard might be close as well. Either way my vote goes to KC.

I do love Genesis and have just about all their progy albums, but i would prefer pretty much every KC track in their 70's on most of Genesis tracks.
