See, the real trick is not just picking your favorite player of each instrument, but rather trying to choose a band that would actually have great chemistry and make good music together.  for instance, John petrucci and tony banks probably shouldnt be in the same band...

I am not quite sure who I would put in such a band, but I'll give it some thought and get back to you.

I woudn't select the most talented virtuosos on each instrument, I'd just select a group of guys who would compose good music with their combined unique talents.

Daniel Gildenlow: composition, lead vocals, songwriting

Robert Fripp: composition, guitar

Neil Peart: percussion, songwriting

Miles Davis: composition, trumpet

Victor Wooten: bass, backing vocals

David Jackson: saxophone

Tomas Bodin: composition, keyboard, backing vocals

John McLaughlin: lead guitar

Drums - John Bonzo
Guitar - Hendrix
Bass - Gary Thain
Vocals - Jon Anderson (well not dead, but sings like an angel), Jim Morrison will do also.
Piano/keyboards - Bach

You are very very right, GS. Despite not really wanting to participate, I've searched for an old lineup I selected on one of these threads where I took this into account, and I'll reproduce it here as a (IMO) cracking example of this:

Originally posted by Me from ages ago Me from ages ago wrote:

Ian Anderson
(Tull) - Lead vocals, flute, acoustic guitar, SOLE lyricist

Reason: A strong band needs a strong leader. Anderson is one of the most charismatic, humourous and entertaining frontmen in prog. Though, I must point out that I'm recruiting 70's Anderson, at a time when he was interested in playing more overtly progressive music.

Kerry Minnear (Gentle Giant) - Keys, vibes, cello, vocals, everything

Reason: Tull toured with Giant in the mid 70s and the two groups really clicked and influenced one another musically (the Songs From The Wood and Free Hand albums are a testament to this). Also, Kerry Minnear just happens to be THE GREATEST KEYBOARDIST OF ALL TIME and is adept and many other instruments besides. A real asset.

Jan Akkerman (Focus) - Guitar

Reason: Surely I don't need to justify this one?

John Wetton (King Crimson) - Bass, vocals

Reason: An extremely competent but not egotistical bassist. Squire would take the band in a far too Yes-like direction. His solo album is a testament to the fact that Squire=Yes. I think Wetton could handle going in the direction of the other member's ideas, as well as contributing his own. Also, he'd have a fine voice for harmony duities, and with Minnear on-board you'd expect plenty of multi-part vocals.

Mattias Olsson - Drums, percussion, (vocals?)

Reason: I really dig orchestral percussion. Also, this group is going to want to use a lot of very unusual instruments, so they need someone who's used to hitting strange things with sticks.

So there we are - A group that would play lengthy, but non-epic songs encompassing a wide variety of styles and instruments, complete with rip-roaring solos on guitar, flute, keys and tuned percussion, complex arrangements and intelligent, witty lyrics.

Hmmm... believe it or not this has inspired me to think up a new, jazzier dream band! Argh! God save us from these threads!

If everyone in it's instrument is brillinat and is sufficiently open minded to hear other's opinion (basic in making prog, then any group of the best musicians will be alright)

Vocals - Peter Hamill

Guitar - David Gilmour

Bass - Chris Squire

Drums - Neil Peart or Christian Vander, I still don't know.

Keyboards - Rick Wakeman & Keith Emerson (If Banco had two keiboards, why can't we ?)

Flute - Ian Anderson !!!!

Sound engeneer, Alan Parson ... of course !

And as advisors ... Waters and ... ME ! jajaja

I read somewhere that just a bit before Jimmy Hendrix's death, he and Keith Emerson had talked about a project together.  Anybody heard of this?  That would have been an interesting sound!!

I've heard of it

it's about keith emerson and greg lake who were auditionnning drumers ... and they auditioned the drummer from the jimi hendrix experience. so hendrix went jealous so he wanted to do ... Hendrix, Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Now that would have been interesting.

GoldenSpiral and Trouserpress' notes on chemistry are well-taken. The players should 'work' musically, although part of the fun is mixing and matching. Anyway, without further ado, here's one band that would be fun, for an intense kick:

Bass: Jannick Top--one of the most propulsive musicians I've ever heard
Guitar: Robert Fripp--a laser to cut through the pummeling low-end
Guitar: Tony Iommi--would essentially work with Top to provide a massive, sinister foundation.
Drums: John Bonham--one of few drummers who could beat the hell out of his set with grooves.
Drums: Lenny White--to keep Bonham funky and also to provide fills.
Vocals: Alberto Piras--we'd need someone of his grandeur to project over the density of everyone else's playing.

How I picture it all taking shape would be with Top pushing the whole thing forward with bass lines a la De Futura. Bonham would complement the evil bass lines with his bass drum destruction a la Out on the Tiles/Immigrant Song/Wanton Song. Lenny would provide some funkiness and fills like he did with Return to Forever and his own Venusian Summer. Iommi would provide the essential melodies with riffs along the lines of Into the Void/Sabbath Bloody Sabbath/National Acrobat. Fripp would make it all glow a searing red with his sustains like Starless/Larks Tongues 1. Alberto would wail over the top to carry the whole outfit to the gates of heaven.

If Howe gets uppity, HES OUT.  I've no tolerance for that.  The main thrust of the band would be Ian Anderson, Tony Banks, and Ian McDonald.

We could always get Steve Hackett to replace Howe, that'd be pretty sweet as well, I just thought Yes had to have a represantative.

Well, considering the fact that Asia's lineup looked damned good on paper, one should probably be quite careful about what one wishes for.

        Singer/Songwriter:  Robert Plant (Zep)

        Lead Guitarist:  David Gilmour (Floyd)

        Rhythm Guitarist:  Alex Lifeson  (Rush)

Keyboardist:  "Ikey" Isaiah Owens (Mars Volta)

        Bassist:  Les Claypool (Primus)

        Saxaphonist:  Dick Parry (*Session Musician*)

Drums:  Mike Bordin (Faith No More)

Apart from the great affinity for master Fripp, the guitarist will most likely be named Steve, right?!?!? . If you don't believe me, just count the Steve's in most appreciated prog bands (please take Deep Purple '90's into consideration)

OK, let's have a go...

Vocals - Jon Anderson (He's capable at a multitude of instruments and is without competetion my favorite singer, and lyricist in the Prog world)

Keys - Rick Wakeman (I couldn't concieve a supergroup without him! He could have more of a role in composition than in Yes.)

Guitar - Steve Hackett (I'm trying not to overrepresent Yes, here.  Besides, Hackett is another of my favorite guitarists.)

Bass - Geddy Lee (Had to get a Canadian in somewhere.  He could do some vocals, too if he really wanted to...)

Drums - Carl Palmer (He provides more power than Billy, and I think he would fit well with Geddy)

Does anyone see any fundemental problem with this lineup?

I've slightly changed my mind since the last time I posted in one of these, in the interest of examining the personalities of the members:

Guitar/Composition/Arrangement: Frank Zappa
Guitar: Robert Fripp
Vocals: Peter Gabriel
Bass/Vocals: Kevin Ayers (From Soft Machine, hopefully some of you have heard of him...)
Drums: Either Terry Bozzio or Bill Bruford
Keyboards: This is probably the most difficult choice, but I'm going to say either David Sinclair from Caravan (Who can also do backing vocals), or Rick Wakeman (Who might be a bit too aggresive for Fripp and Zappa)

I have done something like that several times before, but will do it again:

Roman Bunka - guitar, oud. This excellent guitar player is way too little known.
If dead people count: Pierre Moerlen - drums, xylophone. marimba, vibraphone. If not, I will replace him with either Christian Vander of Magma or Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru.
Helmut Hattler - bass. Another fantastic musician that should be talked about a lot more. Hardly anyone knows him though.
Didier Malherbe - saxes, flute, doudouk, zeff, ocarina. The best flautist of prog (no, it is NOT Ian Anderson).
Simon House - violin, keyboards.
Barbara Dennerlein - organ (including the bass pedals; would be interesting to have two bass players in the band, so to speak. Her pedal technique is unsurpassed).
Peter Hammill - vocals, rhythm guitar, additional keyboards
Inga Rumpf  - vocals
No idea what this band would come up with; it would definitely be something strange though.

Nick Turner ?  hmmmm i dont think he would really bring anything musically to my line up that's why i  chose
Didier Malherbe instead far better Musician than Ole Nick Turner  , as to Del who needs more electronics when you got the Mighty Tim Blake in your Band

I'm thinking Beck ain't gonna allow a keyboard player in the mix, unless perhaps Jan Hammer is available.

Jeff's down with Tony Hymas too.

Here's some that nearly happened:
Since you mention Fripp/Wetton/Bruford,  add Ian MacDonald, as Fripp was contemplating in '74.
And how about the aborted Wetton/Wakeman/Bruford trio?
Or a real fruition of XYZ?
Finally, here's one that almost happened:
Keith Emerson - keys
Steve Hackett - guitar
Jack Bruce - bass/vocals
Simon Phillips - drums
R.I.P. Cry

Two Bands

A grouping that I believe would bring out the best (both prog and otherwise) in each other:

Vocals: Tom Waits; Carl McCoy (Fields if the Nephilim: Elisium album only)

Electric Guitars: Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins)

Acoustic Guitar: Kaki King

Electric Violin/Electric Mandolin: Nash the Slash

Bass: Rob Fordyce (ex-Cairo)

Keyboards: Kevin Moore (Post-Dream Theater material only)

Drums: Tim Alexander (Primus)

Why the above? Because I can. Now for the more traditional grouping:

Vocals: Peter Hammill; Peter Gabriel

Guitar: Robert Fripp

Bass: Tony Levin

Keys: Kit Watkins; Jan Hammer

Drums: Christian Vander

Percussion: Jamie Muir

Sax: Ornette Coleman

Perhaps produced by Brian Eno?

Even Better:

Vocals: Mr. Doctor; Jon Anderson; Tom Waits; Toby Twining; Elizabeth Frasier

Guitar: Micheal Hedges

Violin: David Cross

Bass/vocals: Chris Squire

Drums: Bill Bruford; Billy Cobham

Keys: Peter Bardens

A very lush, yet mildly disturbing band

As I say every time

Hammill (vocals, lyrics, pianos, keys, guitar), Cross (violins, viola), Giles (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Haskell (bass, vocals), Schetagne (percussion) (or Muir or some similar slightly unusual percussionist)

To go for something a bit different, a set I'd find very interesting

Robert Fripp (acoustic and electric guitar), Christian Vander (drums, percussion, cymbals... many, many cymbals), Chris Karrer (electric violin, guitar)

Would love to see how you could work that out into an album.

The thing with a lot of these bands is that they'd probably never actually work out together at all. But it is kinda fun, isn't it?
Anyway...

Vocals - Geoff Tate
Guitars - Steve Vai
Bass/Backing vox - Geddy Lee
Keyboards - Jon Lord
Drums/Backing vox - Mike Portnoy

I'm usually not a fan of this game... just can't see those "dream bands" working most of the time. However, I have to admit that I like daydreaming about how this might have sounded:

Mike Oldfield - guitar, bass, keyboard
Geddy Lee - vocals, bass, keyboard
Neil Peart - drums, percussion

sometime between '78 and '84.

(Of course Geddy and Mike would be taking turns on bass, not play at the same time. Smile)

Mike has worked with Jon Anderson, and with drummers like Carl Palmer, Phil Collins, Simon Phillips and Morris Pert, so it's not that much of a stretch. Still probably wouldn't have worked though... just nice to think about.

Well Sonja was my teen idol, and I got to see Curved Air on the 1974 'reunion' tour, and i can say that she is/was a totally astonishing performer.  If you listen to the first three Curved Air albums, it's amazing how many styles she manages to sing in, and sing well.
