What I mean by that is:

If your listening to an album, especially one that takes up most of a CD (up to 80 minutes), so you pause the music somewhere half way?

I don't do this regularly, but sometimes, especially for long albums, if I remember to do so, I'll pause it when I feel a half way point has been reached.

3 good reasons to do this are:
1 - you get an idea of what the album would be like if released in the 70s on vinyl (if it was, then there you go).
2 - you get to give your ears a break, which helps keep the music, for the second half of an album, fresh.
3 - bathroom breaks

Does anyone else do this?

No. I totally submit my bladder and intestines to the mandate of whoever decided to put 80 minutes of damn music into one single cd.

Yeah, I do.  Sometimes for a bathroom break or even to listen to other clips of music on Amazon if I'm shopping online.

I sometimes pause books for several months.

I wish I didn't have to pause as often but since I use headphones and I often can't have 80 minutes of undivided attention I pause frequently.

Yea, headphones for 80 minutes or more can be much, I sometimes will get a earache or something. With speakers I can go a lot longer.

How do you figure you're halfway through a movie (besides looking at the time?). Books are obvious.

Like what? And we're talking about pausing halfway, obviously everyone pauses music in general.

Oh, and I don't deliberately pause anything halfway, I just pause at any point I feel like pausing in.

I'm lucky if I can get through an entire song without pausing, stopping, going to another genre, whatever.  I'm prone to weird mood swings, musically.  One minute it'll be Yes, then suddenly I need to hear the Swans.  And because I have 10,000 songs with me at all times, I'm all over the place.

Well, it's very easy to check if you're using iTunes or WMP. Just highlight the songs and see where the halfway point is. If you have a 80 minute CD with 8 tracks, and the first 5 are about 40 minutes, you'd pause after the 5th song.

Again, I don't do this on the reg, but occasionally I'll do this for some minor entertainment.

Well I feel bad for not giving an album the "full" experience, not getting into it fully, but eh, not all can listened to.

Mostly not, I even schedule listening music in my free time and in such way that I get to listen to a certain number of full albums within that interval of time.

One of the cool things about recorded music is that you have the option.  Also one of the things about DVD or the older technology VHS that I really appreciate.  And unless you're a pig who trashes you own bathroom, you get to excrete your personal waste products in peace somewhat.

Good point. When I'm listening to vinyl, I almost always play the whole side through, and sit and listen to it, very different from when I'm listening to the iPod (when I seem to have A.D.D.).  It's more a sense of occasion when you put a record on.  Quite often, though, I will only play one side of the record and not the other.

I see this isn't a very popular thing to do.

I don't know, I sometimes wish to experience the vinyl age, even with new music, but I don't have the means to play vinyl right now.

Yes, sir.

My Dark Side of the Moon experience (through the ages):
Age:

5:
-Hear 'Money' playing on parents' stereo in background
-Play a video game

9:
-What the f**k is a Rogered Waters?

13:
-Listen to 'Money' on Youtube
-Go play a video game

16:
-Listen to each song from beginning to end without interruption late at night perfectly

21:
-Listen up to the clocks in 'Time', but just as the song properly begins...
-Get up and make offspring a sandwich
-Listen from 'Time' to 'Breathe (Reprise)'
-Take out the trash
-Listen from 'Breathe (Reprise)' to 'Us and Them'
-Clean the living room
-Listen from 'Us and Them' to 'Any Colour You Like' (awfully frustratingly)
-Wash the dishes
-Sit down, get ready to pick up halfway through 'Any Colour' but...
-Wipe a child's ass and come back to shut the machine off in frustration
-Play 'Money' on youtube
-Go play a video game

Funny how inexplicably complicated things become with age.

You are starting to scare me.  I hail from the vinyls age and have two non functioning turntables.  The best one's I've had had a lever to lift and drop the needle so indeed you could pause but I always almost immediately recorded my vinyls to cassette to keep them from potential needle damage and again pausing was a simple matter.

But to answer the question, no.  I never tried to deliberately PAUSE halfway.  It would have been coincidental.  More likely a quarter in or a quarter left to go.

I was doing stuff like you can do with the digital ripping on cassette many years before that came into being.  Copying my stuff to cassette for portability.  Making assortment tapes (playlists anyone?).

I can't say Ive done it deliberately either, just something I might do if I realize there's a 'break' in the album, and I need to use the bathroom or get a coffee.

Ive done this a couple of times, but, I've made playlists of an album, splitting the album up as if it were on a vinyl that could hold 40 minutes on each side. This isn't something you can do with every album, you don't want to mess with transitions if there are any.

Yes. It's nice to stand up halfway the album and get some coffee and chocolate or something else to eat, and be happy that there still is a second half.

This reminds me of Ummagumma. How the album is up to 80 minutes and such,

Yes I pause it sometimes. But when I go for long drives that are 3 hours or more, I like to listen to the entire album.
