I am sure most of us have tried at least to convert some people into becoming prog fans. Have you had any success? I have managed to turn my younger brother into a prog maniac. But there my success story stops for now ....

I can't say i fully converted someone, but i have impact quite a few people and added a lot of prog to their musical taste, which i am so proud doing.

None, as far as I'm aware

I only know a few people (outside this place) who have any actual passion for music of any kind. Coincidentally, they do appreciate some prog. Mostly Canterbury and some electronic.

The only one who comes to mind is my wife Vicky; before she met me, confirmed Duran Duran, George Michael, Soft cell... now confirmed progressive rock fanatic (mind you, we have been together 24 years...)

I would say at least three, maybe a few more. Some of them I lost contact with, so I'm not sure if they still are into prog, It mainly happened in the 70s, when progressive music had more exposure than now. I don't think i have converted anyone these days, though some people like a few tunes, but haven't become prog-heads per say.

IDK to be frank. Fully converted? Probably none. Prog bands I had people turn on to? A lot.

It always seems like this is a major thing that atheism and Prog have in common, always lots of talk of 'converting' or 'enlightening' people.

Why are people so obsessed with this? It always seems like such an obnoxious move to me.

I always thought it was fundamental christians who talked about "converting" people.  Really, this has nothing to do with religion; I've exposed many friends to progressive rock and jazz-rock over the years, and quite a few really loved the music and latched onto it.  Sometimes, with less commercial musical styles, it's merely a matter of exposing people to music they wouldn't normally hear and letting them judge for themselves whether they like it.

Nobody is forcing anyone to listen to prog, it is just another genre of music that you introduce to your friends, it is no difference than hip hop, jazz or heavy metal.

Introducing sure, but converting, sounds like a more forceful and sustained attempt.

I can't even get PA people not already so inclined to take an interest in my musical tastes; what luck would I have converting people outside of this site?

Incidentally, since wives were mentioned, my wife doesn't mind my music so long as it's not too rock, not too long, and, especially, not to loud. In PA, she likes Mellow Candle's Swaddling Songs especially.

I've found that playing a CD followed by rolling around on the floor, speaking in tongues is very effective.

Soft Cell were great too.

On topic.  I was introduced to Genesis when I was 13 going on 14 and later on, I don't know how much later 2/3 years later at least (when you're that age years last for ages), 2 friends who had no interest in music before, started borrowing my Genesis LPs.  They were just late starters I didn't convert them as I was more interested in Siouxsie Sioux by that time and Genesis were just another band I liked.  I didn't and don't convert  I just talk to interested people about music of all descriptions.  With those friends I suppose I just sowed the seeds

I find proselytes of prog to be as annoying as any other, for example religious zealots, so I don't bother to even try.

My wife's tolerance level of prog has improved considerably over the years, to the extent where she actively enjoys some of it.

I make recommendations and let people choose for themselves.  If they like it, cool.  If not, it's their ears not mine that are doing the listening.  It also depends on the Prog.  A fan of Rush is not necessarily a fan of ELP; a fan of Symphony X is not necessarily a fan of Yes.  Prog does not come as a single package - it is a collection of diverse artists and styles.  How can one convert to it as a whole?  One can only come to enjoy a new musical artist.  I hate it when people push me to like something I don't like, and since I adhere to the golden rule I don't push people either.  I will try it if it seems interesting but I always reserve the right to not like it.  I extend the same courtesy I demand to others.

A friend at work and I have been loaning each other music for many years now.  An early "success" was Dream Theater.  We saw the SFAM show together.  I think Awake is the only CD of them he actually owns, but I could be wrong.  I like a lot of the (non-prog) music he likes, but I don't think he's fallen in love with any prog bands.  Mostly he just respects them.  Since he did not care for We're Here Because We're Here I've pretty much given up on trying to guess what he'll like.  But as long as he keeps asking, I'll keep loaning.  I do fear a bit for him, though, as he seems to think he's getting too old to appreciate "loud" music.  (He's not even 50.  47 or 48, I think.)

He did get me in to Devo, which is cool.  Most of the other stuff I get from him I am already familiar with.

Oh wait, that does remind me of a recent "success".  He loved Kraftwork The Man Machine!  It's the only KW I have, though.

I've gotten one of my friends partially into 70's Classic Prog. He listens to a lot of stuff like Meshuggah and Nevermore. I sent him some King Crimson, Yes and Mahavishnu Orchestra on facebook and he seems to enjoy it. Also, I've gotten a lot of my friends into The Mars Volta and that's sort of the one band we all share a mutual interest for.

I've never converted people to anything ... be it in music, politics or religion. I believe that is something that is highly personal and it is improbable that we can change their ideas, when we are not in a place that has a lot of ideas, and likes to expound those ideas and their open-ness.

But I have gotten a lot of folks to listen to a lot of music because of my passionate write ups ... and I have a couple of folks that I thank my lucky stars I got a chance to meet, so I would know what the difference is between music and notes!

The rest is talk!
