A thread for the most abrasive, aggressive, intimidating, and also one of the best, black metal bands I've been exposed to. Considering their absolute extreme Satanic beliefs (which I'm not sure how serious they are. Read this:  http://imageshack.us/f/152/northernheritagebmzine2wq3.jpg/" rel="nofollow - http://imageshack.us/f/152/northernheritagebmzine2wq3.jpg/ ), they might be against... I don't know... any sort of appraisal, maybe? I don't know. So I will wash them with hearts and love and happy things, just because I love their music like Strawberry milkshakes and Apples with honey and other such sweet things.

Stuff:

and other such stuff. Share your bubbly sweet love to these adorable folks.

Well I usually donīt pay much attention to lyrics and if I did I wouldnīt be offended by their religious beliefs. I like their challenging and chaotic sounding black metal. Itīs the kind of music you have to be in the mood for, to really appreciate though. If it catchtes me on the wrong foot the bandīs music can be quite a stressful experience.

^ Their lyrics are surprisingly well thought-out and deep. When I actually read them it adds a whole new layer to the music. And yes it can be quite stressful, but not a lot of music can succeed in making me this scared and anxious, which is another reason I listen to them so much.

It's the only black metal band that actually does sound twisted, the rest tends to sound too cheesy.

Nice find on the magazine interview, frippism. Looks like it's from their very early days and as I understand it they've evolved a lot as a band since then and seem a bit more measured in their public statements. (I love me some black metal, but I completely despair of the eviller-than-thou pissing contests that so many black metal musicians feel obliged to get into, and that interview's a good example of it - I literally can't tell whether the band believed the goofy stuff they were saying then or whether they were just trying to be the grimmest kids on the block.)

Either way, I really liked Fas so I will probably check out their other albums in due course.

My favorite is when he calls "organized" Satanism an excuse for life lovers to gather and be happy like f**king hippies.

If you're in a state, where Satanists look like hippies, you're probably more a Satanist than Satan himself :O.

I support blatant philosophical satanism in my music, so I support Deathspell. Definite one of the best black metal bands around.

Have you listened to Dodecahedron's latest yet? They're basically the same band but with more w**k.

It's pretty good, but they sound like an obvious Deathspell ripoff. But I'm way excited for the new Deathspell EP coming out soon. It's gonna be dope.

Blatant (adjective): completely lacking in subtlety/ done openly and unashamedly.
Philosophical (adjective): of or relating to the study of fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence.
Satanism (noun): the worshiping of Satan, typically involving a travesty of Christian symbols and practices.

Fas-Ite is the best along with Chaining the Katechon or w/e its called.

If you are huge fans of Deathspell I reccommend Thy Catafalque. VERY VERY good black metal. Start with their first couple of albums to hear some traditional stuff but every album they release they begin to add more atmosphere and experimentation. A good example of a black metal band expanding and growing with every release. Not quite as Gorgutsy crazy as deathspell but heavy as heck nonetheless.

Specifically try their 3rd album. First track is black metal... second track starts out extremely weird with electronica and strange female ghosts.

Even though Kenose is considered an EP, it's 37 minutes long and so I consider it currently my favorite along with Fas-Ite

Me likely this band.

Fas is def my favorite. The Chaining... EP is just about as good in my book. Need to listen to their lastest again, but wasn't as impressed with it as I was their other material I've heard.

Goood news about a new EP coming. Any details on that?? (Track listing/release date/etc)

I want to give this band more hearts and bunnies. What other bands sound like deathspell?

Dodecahedron
Gorguts's album Obscura

I have not heard Negativa- do they sound similar?

I mean, we could turn this into a contest to find the most soul-crushing ridiculous music possible. I mean, it is hard to go beyond Deathspell or Gorguts's Obscura. ha

I've been a fan since I first heard Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice.  I even used the album title to get bonus points in Latin class.  Although my interest in music with that much aggression has waned, I still enjoy their more atmospheric songs.

So new Deathspell what does everyone think? Good stuffs. Really could have been one track the way it flows. It probably was meant to be. Just split into "sections" by parts and lyrical themes I bet.

Also, does everything feel like the Satan "the Haulocaust was great not because it killed Jews, but because it caused suffering, Just like Pol Pot was a great leader for killing his people" attitude is tongue and cheek because their music sounds so evil? Or do you think they are really actual evil terrible people that worship Satan?

I feel like the Satan thing started as tongue and cheek but I can never tell where seriousness begins and ends.

I think that "Drought" is probably in my top 3 favorite releases by them. Just incredible.

The Satan thing I feel like they might've taken it somewhat seriously in the beginning but since then they've probably lightened up to some extent.

I'm down to discuss some lyrics, I just got into these guys and they're badass...
How about just discussing certain songs at a time? I'm not big into reading, and I'm not very much into religon either so a lot of this is very confusing to me. Some of the phrases I'd like to investigate are:
"Where cause becomes consequence" and Hegel's quote "Death is the most terrible thing, and to maintain it's works is what requires the greatest strength."
Maybe it would just be better to go one song at a time because a lot of this has to deal with it's context, it's not right to take out phrases and just look at those.

lol no I was just surprised by the rather insane attack on Satanism. Well I'm not defending Satanism I don't think anyone here is a Satanist :D . I don't that DsO are on the "woooo Satan side", but more on the side that questions god and his importance, and yes, probably doesn't see the point in an advanced society at times. I think it's an interesting point even if I don't agree with it.

I'm not a Satanist but it seems like a rather reasonable belief system (unless we're talking theistic satanism, which is ridiculous).

But the new Deathspell EP is fantastic.

I have no issues with Satanism. Satanists tend to be some of the nicest people around.

My biggest hangup with getting into black metal is finding out that the band members are Nazis. I don't want to accidentally enjoy a band fronted by Nazis.

Are any of these guys Nazis?

I dug the first few minutes of what I heard.

Yeah I know what you mean, I like the whole "questioning God side" but until I came here and read that interview, I thought that's all Deathspell was. But they're also all about destruction that's where it gets goofy and simply not logical. But other than the "being happy watching everyone suffer" side they're really cool and I enjoy trying to decipher their lyrics. This is the epitome of Progressive Black metal... almost makes Meshuggah sound like Metallica Tongue

I think that suffering slightly always is being OK in a way. Idk... There's like a fairly normal level of "ok" which constitutes a bit of suffering from your boring life or something like that.
