What were some moments in the history of prog that we'd like to forget? What album or concert did you hear that made you embarrassed to associate with the prog genre?
The first thing that comes to my head is Rick Wakeman's ice capades thing... I mean really. how cheesy can you possibly get?
any others?

I think 'The Hare That Lost His Spectacles' in 'A Passion Play' is one of the most teeth grindingly awful things I've ever heard.
Also, every ELP 'comedy' number, bar 'The Sheriff' which is tolerable, should never have been written at all.
'Rhapsodies' by Rick Wakeman is a real shock- there's a disco version of 'Rhapsody In Blue' and a reggae 'Swan Lake' called 'Swan Lager' (!)- the mind boggles....

Medieval passions plays were often extremely heavy thematically so in order to give the audience some respite from the subject matter the interval was often composed of a lighthearted sketch often comprising animal caricatures. This is the purpose of "The Hare..." on Jethro Tull's "Passion Play."

By the way, Mr Class and Qual., nice avatar of one of the most underrated rock albums ever- 'Mad Shadows' by Mott The Hoople, which ranks higher than their glam rock work does for me.
'Who Dunnit' by Genesis is horrid too- definitely the worst song they ever recorded.

I like all the comedy numbers of ELP.......
I think they are great! It shows the versatility of the band.....after all the bombast they allways had some lightweighted songs. I don't think Yes or Pink Floyd(with the exception of Seamus) would do something like that.

I think ELP has quite a few to their credit.
The line "every day a little sadder/a little madder/someone get me a
ladder" from Still You Turn Me On, Emerson's attempt at composing a
classical piece on Works Vol. 1 and... well... everything about Love
Beach are all options that spring to mind.

'Whodunnit' is the winner for sure! 'Illegal Alien', 'Jesus He Knows Me' and 'I Can't Dance' earn honourable mentions.
The middle-noodling part of KC's 'Moonchild' always raises my ire.
'Seamus' and 'Mademoiselle Nobs' from the FLOYD are notoriously bad.
With 'Pow R Toc H' close behind. Many people hate 'Dogs of War' but I
don't mind it (live that is....)
ROGER WATERS' "Radio K.A.O.S." is tough to listen to.
"Big Generator" by YES and parts of "Union" are horrid.
And never was a big fan of ASIA, PRISM, SAGA and some STYX. (That 'Prog-Lite') kind of stuff
------------- Marmalade...I like marmalade.

I guess I'm more new school than the rest of the posts so far, but for me it's no contest. "Get a Life" by Queensryche is a terrible terrible song. This from a band that until that moment had been one of my top 5 favorites.
Don't get me wrong, I still like 'em, but that song almost single-handedly negated all the great work they had done to that point.
Honorable mention goes to LaBrie's first Mullmuzzler album. I don't even remember what song it was, I just remember ripping the CD out of the player with the wife in the car laughing at it (and me) and I haven't played it since.

Guys Great nominations here
I thought " do you want to be the lover of another under cover you could even be the man on the moon " was the cringeworthy line from still you turn me on .
The start of the waiting room is dreadful on what otherwise is the mother of all concept albums. I fear giving that abum to prog skeptics for that one track.
Tales struck severe blows to Prog which thas never fully recovered and only with the rise of a new generation in the 90s has it somewhat risen again

can't help agreeing with Chris Stacey and Cluster One: Asia sucks!!! I really don't understand why they are listed in the archives (and for quite a long time!!!) while great artists such as Daap Purple and Jon Lord are excluded! I like ELP's comedy stuff, and the stupid "ladder" line in Still You Turn Me On doesn't bother me since English is not my native language! I care more about the wah-wah guitars in the studio version. ELP became more embarrasing with love beach (albeit a few shiny moments in that album), and hot seat is total crap. I also agree with comments on Yes' generator and union albums. Hard to imagine such cheesy stuff may come out of a band, who once produced masterpieces as the Yes album and Close to the Edge. (union is a little bit better than generator, but loses creidt owing to the great line up, which is highly promising but delivers nothing) Genesis itself is an embarrasment after Hackett's departure, I think all of their post '80's albums (well, 3 and duke might be exceptions.. but that's it!) should be removed! I really don't understand why some dudes keep on praising these s**t.
------------- Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

'Rhapsodies' by Rick Wakeman is a real shock |
...but features one of the best gatefold pictures. Wakeman flying!!
I'd like to add:
Yes - Man In The Moon (oh dear GOD what an awful song)
ELP - the cover of Love Beach (and the music on Love Beach for that matter) - guys, you are not the Bee Gees.
Genesis - Calling All Stations tour in North America cancelled due to lack of interest. This is the band that 10 years earlier sold out 5 nights in a row at the biggest cities.
And finally, Neil Peart's rat tail in the Big Money video.

I like everyones nominations, great stuff! Sometimes you just gotta step back and laugh, you cant take it all too seriously.
As for more cringeworthy moments, everyone's favorite band DT have had their share of course, including:
-All rap passages on ToT
-All the lyrics to 'Sacrificed Sons'
-That silly middle section of A Change of Seasons with all the lame quotations
-All of 'The Great Debate', or as I like to call it 'An Ode to Stupid Political Pundits'
-Pretty much James LaBrie in general

Yeah, well, I should have explained myself more. The reason I don't like the album that much is that I feel Wish You Were Here is a much better album because of Wright's more prominant role. I still think without him, Floyd would not be as great a band as they are.
