Inspired by a previous thread dating back to 2009. Tried to put a bit of variety of bands in this one and mix up the classics with the modern. Really hard choice, but I'm going with the second Post/ Math Rock option - I love all three of those bands dearly. What's your choice?

Maybe not too surprisingly, I went with the Krautrock option. I mean Phallus Dei, Yeti, Tanz, Babylon, Wolf City, Viva la Trance, Delay, Soundtracks, Monster Movie, Eve Bamyashi, Tago Mago, Future Days, Babalooma, Landed, Affenstund, Pharaoh, Hosianna, Einsjager, Nosferatu, Letze Tage, Seligpreisung, Aguirre, Salomos etc etc....
Some of my fave records right there

Voted for Crossover because Oldfield is one of my favorites and I like what I have heard from Big Big Train. However, I do not like Talk Talk. For me, it is less about the genre than the band or artist. King Crimson is also one of my faves, but I have not heard enough Beardfish to make a statement about them and I know nothing about Storm Corrosion. I also really like Amon Duul II, and have respect for Popol Vuh from what I have heard, but again, I don't know their music that well. I can't stand Can. The bands on the other two categories I don't care much for either, so it was easy for me to ignore them with impunity. Categories have their uses, though, and can help guide us to new music we might enjoy (with the risk of trapping us in a maze of genre identifications with no understanding of the music).

Went with Crossover. I love Talk Talk. Of Big Big Train I only heard and own The Underfall Yard, and it's a fantastic record. Mike Oldfield is not an artist I usually listen to, but albums like Hergest Ridge or Ommadawn are pretty impressive.

don't know all of beardfish's output, but King Crimson and Storm Corrosion is enough to give it to eclectic.

Very hard choice between Eclectic, Kraut and RIO/Avant. Oldfield is one of my favorite artists but I don't like Talk Talk at all. No vote by now.

Haven't heard all of these bands, but I have to go with post/math because Russian Circles is my favorite band on the list, and Sigur Ros is great, too.

I tend to like more from Crossover, but with the band options I went with Eclectic. I love Big Big Train and I like some Mike Oldfield stuff but I don't like Talk Talk at all. I don't like Storm Corrosion at all but I do enjoy some King Crimson and Beardfish is one of my favorites so I went with Eclectic.

Eclectic over Krautrock yo ! Rio / Avant and Post-Rock have some killer albums in there too.

Yeah.. the krautrock trio is the only one, imo, with three amazing bands as opposed to one or two.

I voted for Krautrock as those are three really terrific bands. My runner-up is certainly RIO/Avant -- I adore Art Zoyd (a particular fave of mine in PA), love Henry Cow, and really like Kayo Dot.

Crossover. I like all three bands listed.
I haven't heard any RIO/Avant or Krautrock I like, I don't like King Crimson much (if at all) and Sigur Ros are the only post rock band that do anything for me.

RIO/Avant. I love Kayo Dot, Art Zoyd's first two albums are brilliant (I really need to hear more from them) and the one HC album I have isnt bad (Western Culture).
I dont like kraut- or Post- Rock and the only eclectic band there I like is KC. I dont knowany of the crossover acts so it was a very easy choice in the end.

Eclectic option. By the way, what's actually "eclectic" on minimalistic, quiet and melancholic album Storm Corrosion?

This is too complex a choice for me. For example I like of Talk Talk what is more Avant or Postrock than Crossover, also Oldfield is fine but not where he has "crossed over" to pop. Can are pretty eclectic etc.

Amon Düül 2 and Can are 2 of my top ten favorite bands, and Popol Vuh,
while not making it into the top 10, are excellent as well. it would have been a much tougher choice if Van der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant had been in for eclectic instead of Beardfish and Storm Corrosion and the Residents and Univers Zero had been in for Rio/Avantgarde instead of Kayo Dot and Art Zoyd

Crossover for me.
Big Big Train and Mike Oldfield are heavyweights, even when Talk Talk isn't my cup of tea.

There are great things about all of these categories, but if I was stuck on an island, I'd have to go with: Crossover: Mike Oldfield, Big Big Train, Talk Talk
