I was just curious to see what you all like most. I chose some of my favourite songs by the classic bands, all 10+ minutes and from my favourite era of prog ('71-'73). No survivor or anything, just vote for your favourite Smile

Nothing to say here. Nothing at all. Nothing is easy.

A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers is my favorite today. Starless has lost it's power. So even Supper's Ready, Close to the Edge, and Echoes pass it. I hate Thick as a Brick and Tarkus.

Not sure starless is long enough, though it is pretty 'epic'. You can't beat "supper's ready" though, that will have to be my choice.

This, to us, was perhaps Jerusalem boogie, but to the birds, it meant Supper is Ready.

How long must a track be to be considered an epic? 10+ min.? 15+ min.? 20+ min.? Starless is 12:18.

Anyway, many excellent epics here, but my vote goes to TAAB.

Ehh, I just went with 10+ minute songs. I know Starless is sort of an outlier here, but I wanted some Crimson representation and I like Starless more than Lizard. Probably should have went with Lizard instead. Oh well.

Nope.  Not all of us are in agreement.  In fact, I would rank CttE 4th, behind Supper's Ready, TAAB, and Echoes.

I can't decide between CTTE and TAAB. The rest are also amazing, and barely fall behind those two.

I mean that with Echoes in the list I don't care of what the other epics are, even when the list includes Close To The Edge, Starless and Thick As A Brick.

Echoes is my favorite song of my favorite band so I couldn't prefer anything else without falling in contradiction with myself.

That's the meaning of the word "read". Of course I know quite well all the tracks in the list.

I don't like Supper's Ready.

TAAB
Think Starless is as good, but TAAB wins in this context due to its extra Epicness (is that a word ?)
Then:
Supper
Echoes
Close

The rest dosent mean that much to me, would be well down my list.

A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers is not music, it's something more.
1- A plague..
2- Supper's Ready
3- Starless & CttE
4- the rest

Close to the Edge, with Tarkus close behind.  I love Starless, but I wouldn't consider it an "epic" in the same sense as the others here.  Had "Passion Play" been included, I might have voted for that.

"Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" hasn't really sunk in with me yet.  It might be the most complex and convoluted piece of all of these.  So much so that I have a hard time getting into it.

"Echoes" is a staple of mine, and probably the first side-long prog track that won me over when I was a kid.  But in retrospect, it's a bit lightweight compared to some of these choices.

Every track listed is Awesome, but I agree with Holy Moly that Starless is not really an epic and Echoes is a little too much of an extended jam to get my vote. I too would have voted for Passion Play had it been included, but I find myself less enamored with TAAB as time goes on. That said, I voted for Close to the Edge.

P.S. No Rush?! Angry

I don't know, I used to really like "Tarkus" 4-5 years ago. Keith and Carl have such a great chemistry. I like pretty much all of the melodies, even if some of the jazzy ones sound pretty cheesy for serious jazz. And Carl, man, Carl is a hoot. In one place your hands and arms will get burned out sooner than you hope.
