Hi everybody, I'm a great fan of Daevid Allen's Gong. My favourite tracks are "Flying Teapot" (RGI pt. 1), "I never glid before" (RGI pt. 2), "Master Builder" (RGI pt. 3), "Shamal" and "Wingful of eyes" (Shamal).  But the whole trilogy is very very good IMO.

What are your fav tracks? (In the whole discography    )

Do you think that GONG ended when Daevid Allen left (Shamal, I suppose , when the group was lead by the great Pierre Moerlen    )?

Thanks

'Master Builder' is their greatest track.

I think the music from 'Master Builder' is their peak moment. I didn't know it was so popular. Expected to be the only one to mention the track.

After David Aellen there were still some very fine albums.

Master Builder is truly excellent but I'd also rate "Radio Gnome", "Oily Way", "I Never Glid Before" and "Fohat Digs Holes In Space" as equally fine examples of Allen-era Gong. I'd take Angel's Egg over You any day.

'Master Builder' from the "You" album. It also contains some of the best Moerlen drumming ever in a Gong album (and let me tell you that his input was permanently an all-time high) - that's why I put that particular song in my CD player the minute I knew that Master Moerlen had died from a heart attack in early May. This song is so intense, that instead of making me feel sad, it made me feel excited.

Regards.

Oily Way is fun, but most of Gong's music I know is very much fun. I like the guitar sound of Steve Hillage, and the female vocals (very sexy), but the rhythm section is very good also.

best songs according to Garp:

Prostitute poem
With Song / I am your pussy
Oily Way
I Never Glid Before
Zero The Hero/The Witch spell
You never blow your trip forever

'You Can't Kill Me' is great- a perfect realisation of Daevid Allen's twisted Syd Barrett homages and the jazz rock of the musicians.

You Tried Too Hard is a wonderful, elegaiac early song that is often overlooked.

"Fohat Digs Holes In Space". Absolutely amazing.

I'm another fan of Master Builder. I think is the best song of  "You", and  I could  not help playing my "air bass" and "air drums" every time I listen to . What an amazing rythm pattern!. But, if that wasn't enough, the playing of Mr Hillage and Mr Malherbe its also amazing.

Other favs:

Oily way, Nevr glid before, and Eat the phone book (very funny and groovie, I just love Moerlen's drum fills) from Angel's Egg, wich, by the way,it's my favourite album.

You can't kill me, Tried so hard and Fohat digs holes in space from Camembert Electrique

And finally, Flying Teapot

CrazyDiamond, "in the whole discography" is truly saying something. Even on the official Gong homepage ( http://www.planetgong.co.uk/ - http://www.planetgong.co.uk/  ) they admit that the discography is probably faulty and incomplete.

I mean in the discography accepted and known almost by everybody, I know that there is a huge amount of material!

My all-time favourite Gong track is "Castle In The Clouds" (Angel's Egg).

"Flying Teapot" is excellent too, and to complete my top 3, I'd add from "Outer Temple" to "Love Is What Y Make It", which seem to segue into a single track. I would add "Flute Salad", but that would mean having to include "Oily Way", which I'm not keen on...

Thanks for reminding that great band!
I like all the pieces reccommended by the people upstairs, but for some reason one song became very influential to me while digging into Gong cataloge:

Zero the Hero and the Witch's Spell

I just love the vocal improvisation from the second minute to the third, which then turns into a sax solo... Brilliant!

I don't like sax in general, but Gong is one big exception. (others are the mind blowing reeds of early KC and perfect wind section of VdGG, of course!)

And then there's the sexy voice of Gilli Smith... I believe she's only second to Annie Haslam in prog scene (and I don't know if there exists any other!)

The song appears in Peel Sessions album under the name Zero the Hero and the Orgasm witch! The improvisation goes along with guitar lines, and there's superb drumming!

And the least I care about Gong is the lyrics, though they are very entertaining. Whish I was a native speaker and enjoy it all through.

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Yes, I also do my air bass and air drums almost every time I listen to this track. And of course, when the sax and guitar solos get in, I can't help looking across my bedroom as if Malherbe and Hillage were actually on the other side of the "stage". Prog makes me sort of schizo at times...

You'v pretty much summed it up, those are easily some of Gongs finest songs... I'd possibly add 'You Cant Kill Me' and 'Fohat Digs Holes in Space' and 'Gong Song' though.

Love is how Y make it should be mentioned more, nothing like a song that sums up the whole trilogy in 3 minutes

I love the whole of Angel's Egg, it's a masterpiece! I also have a soft spot for And You Tried So Hard from Camembert Electrique.

I've got a copy of Time Is the Key by Pierre Moerlen's Gong; the first side of the LP is full of wonderful percussion that reminds me of Steve Reich but the other side gets a bit too funkyjazzrock for my taste.

I previously disliked Gong and it's only recently that I've come to give them a second chance. What a fool I've been. Oily Way made an immediate impression, so that has to be my favourite, but I imagine I'll have plenty more to discover..
