Well, since my first Topic here was about your most favorite Genesis album, I will close the Genesis posts with this one.
And since is really very tough to ask for only one song (and very unfair), here is the question:
Which are your 5 most beloved songs from Genesis?
You can put them in any order you want. (or alltogether!)
I'm sensing that I should start first eh????
Ok, let's see...
I will put them in chronological order.

1. The Knife (Trespass)
2. The Musical Box (Nursery Cryme)
3. Twillight Alehouse (B-side of the single Musical Box)
4. Supper's Ready (Foxtrot) (But only in the live version from the 'Genesis Archives' box set)
5. The Dancing of the Moonlight Knight (Selling England by the Pound)

I know I left out of this list some really remarkable songs, like The Fountain of Salmasis, The Lamia, Carpet Crawlers, Firth of Fifth, etc etc... But what can I do? I can't ask for the top-20 songs!
(But it would have been easier that way) LOL
I hope you will like this topic and respond... Wink

I think it should have been 10 instead of 5, but oh well I didn't create the thread. I love all of these songs in your list. It's just so hard to make this list because so much has to be neglected.

I hear you. Five songs is quite a challenge for such a great band, who made consistently good music for so long..

I read all your posts, and thank you for commenting first of all.
But I have one question: I don't see anybody refers to the song 'Twilight Alehouse'.
This happens because nobody really likes that song? I'm the only one who thinks it is an amazing song?
Or you just never heard about it? As I wrote it was on the b-side of the single 'The musical Box' and you can't find it in any record. Only in the box set "Genesis Archives". If you haven't heard it, go to YouTube and find it. I believe it surely worth it!
I had this song in an old video tape from a live performance for the Belgian Tv I think.
There were the usual and very known songs, The Musical Box, The Fountain of Salmacis, etc. And that one!
I had no idea where was that song. I was searching and searching, but nothing. So every time I had to put this video tape in order to listen to it. Until one day the video tape was destroyed! And I was panicked! Where I could find that song again? Nobody had no idea about it.
Thankfully sometime later that Cd box was released, and the song was inside! Hoorraayy!!! hahahaha
Anyway... Smile

Well, I sat down and made a list with all your votes so far... (I hope there will be more).
You have voted for 25 songs alltogether. But some of them are far beyond the others in votes.
I will post here only the most favorite songs so far...
Here we go:
 Supper's Ready: 14
 Musical Box: 10
 Cinema Show: 8
 Firth of Fifth: 6
Dancing with the Moonlight Knight: 6
 In the Cage: 5
 Dance on a Volcano: 5

And the list continues with 'The Knife' 'One for the Wine' and 'Burning Rope' with 4....
Let's see if there will be a continue...

Thank you all for participating in this...

I see that enough people are still voting. Thumbs Up
But I believe that when you start a topic like this, you should reach a conclusion at some point right?
So here's is what I'm gonna do:
I will leave this topic for one more week, and after that I will stop counting your top-5's. Of course anybody can write if he/she wants, but on Wednesday 29/8 I will stop the counting.
After that, I will transfer this topic on the Polls section, by writting the 10 most popular songs at that time. (But without writting how many votes they received, and I will mix them up as well.
So, this will be the final stage of this topic. Anyone who wants to vote, will go to the poll's section and vote one of these 10 songs. And after sometime that Poll will close as well. So, we will make the PA's Genesis Top-5 songs! Wink
What do you think? You like the idea?
I found it great! Because there is no point having people writting and writting, without having some results at some point... I hope you agree on this plan, and I hope many will vote in the final stage... Let's see... Smile
The important dates are: 1.Wednesday 29/8: I'll stop the counting. (Every post that will be posted on Wednesday 29/8 counts).
2. Thursday 30/8: The 10 most popular songs will be moved to the polls section and there you will be able to vote.
No comments will be needed. Just to vote.
There I will also write for how many days that poll will be open...
That's all! Tongue

I love the format, I did something similar a few years with Porcupine Tree, there was the 'nomination round' then the 'final voting' round.

With that being said, my top five Genesis songs are:

1)  Dance on a Volcano
2)  Turn it On Again
3)  The Cinema Show
4)  One for the Vine
5)  Home by the Sea / Second Home by the Sea (Live, The Way we Walk)

(honorable mention for "The Chamber of 32 Doors")

Come on! Only 3 days left!
Wednesday is the last day! After that I will gather up all your songs and I will move this Topic to the Polls section.
So, you have 3 more days in order to write your most beloved songs!
In my latest count I observed that 6 songs were preferred in common in your lists. But for the last 4 places, there are about 7-8 songs 'fighting' to enter the top-10.

Well, as I wrote at a previews comment, yesterday was the last day that you could write your most beloved songs before I collect all the songs that you have chosen, make the lists with them, and then pass this topic to the next (and final) stage. The POLL!
Of course this topic will be still open, and anybody that is in the mood can post here his/her Top-5 songs.
But they will not be counted for the voting.
Now, let's sum up.

You have chosen 25 songs from the Gabriel period in total, and 22 songs from their later period. Total: 47 songs!
From all these 47 songs I will pick the 10-12 that were chosen most of the times, and put them in a poll in the poll section. There you will be able to vote your most favorite song, so after sometime we will make Genesis Top-5 songs according to your votes.
In the poll we have 2 options. Or you can vote only one song, or multiple ones. Voting for just one it is very hard and rather unfair I believe. I was thinking to propose that each one can participate with 3 votes. But it will be up to you not to cheat on that. Because I can't arrange the poll to accept only 3 votes from each person. The option says 'multiple'. So I will show good faith on that matter.
For the moment I'm counting, and tomorrow morning or later this afternoon, I will set up the poll.
Let's see which ones will be the best 5 songs that you will choose!
Thank you for your participation on this topic! Clap

I've already posted my five, but I just want to say that I am surprised to see a lot of so gs being selected from the album DUKE. I should mention that I am surprised and Happy to see that! Duke really is one of their best albums. It offers the perfect blend of prog, pop and synth(electronic) . A lot of people don't realize that DUKE is quite a technical album. It offers quite a lot for the listener. Anyway, glad to see that I am not the only one who really sees the mastery that is DUKE!!

I agree, Duke is great. None of the songs from Duke quite make my top 5, but Behind the Lines, Heathaze and Turn It On Again are all pretty high up there. Apparently it's Tony Banks' favorite.

My favourite band.... if I consider the 1970-1976 era.
Imho, FOXTROT is the best album I've ever heard.

My five:

GOLD MEDAL  Supper's Ready  -  The Bible of progressive rock.

SILVER MEDAL  The Musical Box  -  One of the strongest end section ever recorded

BRONZE MEDAL  Watcher Of The Skies  -  Great mellotron opening, amazing rhythm, bombastic finale.

then:

4th PLACE  Dancing With The Moonlit Knight  -  Peter Gabriel, The Voice of Britain
5th PLACE  Firth Of Fifth  -  Incredible Instrumental sections and stunning solos

and honourable mentions for:

Seven Stones, The Fountain Of Salmacis, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed, Time Table, Get'em Out By Friday, Stagnation, The Knife, The Battle Of Epping Forest, Entangled, One For The Vine

I've never been a fan of Firth of Fifth, even the solos leave me shrugging.

I actually listened to Genesis before what happened after Gabriel left.

1. The Knife ( live )
2. Supper's Ready ( ( live '76 with Bruford )
3. Abacab ( I liked that track because there seemed to be some hope at that point )
4. Home By The Sea ( both parts )
5. Firth Of Fifth

And Duke was a collossal f**k up. Why? why ? why ?

It looks like SUPPERS READY is getting top honors in this form. It's not my favourite, but it's certainly one of thier best. Maybe GENESIS's most layered complex piece.

For me, Supper's Ready and Echoes are the best 15+minutes songs ever (not counting songs like Thick As  Brick or Tubular Bells that are a whole album).

You've got good taste. Tubular bells and Echoes are some serious epics, but give STILL REMAINS by FATES WARNING a spin. Great 16+min track. You won't be disappointed cause if you like those other 2 you'll appreciate that one

Anyone pick up the GENESIS LIVE BOX SET (1973 to 2007)?? I asked for it for my birthday. I wanna get my hands on the remastered mixes with the 5.1 surround DVDs. I wanna know if anyone is enjoying what looks to me like a beastly collection.

I think that we should all agree that SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND is arguably the very best GENESIS album. I think it is, even though A TRICK OF THE TAIL is my all time favourite. What a masterpiece that one is!! 😜

This has to be hard to do it for both eras, so here's what I'll do: One for the Gabriel era, one for the Collins era, and one for both...
Also, I'll have a few honorable mentions...

1. "Firth of Fifth" (Selling England by the Pound, 1973)/"it." (The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, 1974)
2. "Supper's Ready: (Foxtrot, 1972)
3." The Musical Box" (Nursery Cryme, 1971)
4. "Get 'Em Out By Friday" (Foxtrot, 1972)
5. "The Knife" (Trespass, 1970)

Honorable Mentions: "The Silent Sun", "Stagnation", "The Return of the Giant Hogweed", "Seven Stones", "Watcher of the Skies", "Time Table", "Can-Utility and the Coastliners", "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight", "The Battle of Epping Forest", "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", "In The Cage", "Carpet Crawlers", "The Colony of Slippermen", and "Back in N.Y.C."

Phil Collins era (1976-1992):
1. "Ripples" (A Trick of A Tail, 1976)
2. "Dodo Suite" (Abacab/B-Sides, 1981 (Submarine and Naminanu)
3. "One For The Vine" (Wind and Wuthering, 1976)
4. "Mama" (Genesis, 1983)
5. "Tonight Tonight Tonight" (Invisible Touch, 1986)

Honorable Mentions: Everything else from A Trick of A Tail and Wind and Wuthering, "Follow You Follow Me", "Deep in the Motherlode", "Duke Suite", "Turn It On Again", "Abacab", "Man On The Corner", "That's All", "Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea", "Invisible Touch", "The Brazillian", "Jesus He Knows Me", "Driving the Last Spike", and "Fading Lights"
