I was thinking about all the prog that ever existed.  Folk Prog and Fusion are two popular sub-genres of prog, but I was wondering if there were any less obvious types of prog styles.  Prog Rap? Prog Country? Prog Disco? Feel free to add any to any non-popularized genre.

Prog Punk is something like the Cardiacs, extremely weird and f**ked up.... Except the music isn't, but just thinking about makes it sound extremely weird and f**ked up...

Inner City Unit were a good example of Prog Punk, especially their albums "Pass Out", "The President Tapes" and "Punkadelic"

Neondian (1984): garage (sometimes punk) prog rock by Klaus Dinger (ex member of NEU!). A dynamic mixture of ferocious and unconventional keyboard / guitars sounds!

Progressive Ambient Trance/techno, Shpongle - Are you Shpongled?

Prog Country....hmmmm....now that would sound interesting.

I'd be really interested to hear a band doing that.

Sting has a tune called 'Love is Stronger Than Justice' that is essentially a country tune with verses in 7/4 time, and it seems to complement the song.  I'm not saying this is a prog-style tune, but it shows that quirky alterations (such as non-standard time signatures) can add a different slant to a musical genre, and perhaps for the better.

So if anyone knows of any Country Prog bands out there, I'd love to give them a listen....

I believe there are two quasi-prog combinations that should be noted.

One is a combination of what is often called "trance-beat" music, with prog elements.  Perhaps the best example of this is a group called Babble, which put out two albums, The Stone and Ether.  The latter is, to my mind, as "progressive" as much of what exists on the site, and has been in almost constant rotation on my CD player for over 5 years.

The second is a combination of "world beat" music, with prog elements.  For anyone familiar with the Buddha Bar series, there are quite a few examples on those albums.

In both, the prog elements tend to include electronica, non-standard instrumentation, use of atmospheres, textures and sound effects, and occasional extended instrumental passages.  It is rare to find non-standard time signatures, though there are a few examples.

There is also at least one example of Christian rock with prog elements, on an album called "Supernatural" by DC Talk.  The song "Dive" in particular sounds like something from Magical Mystery Tour or Yellow Submarine, which many consider to be near-prog albums.

Peace.

Cracking album! Like Ozrics minus the rock!

Alamaailman Vasarat should be mentioned for creating music that sounds at once ethnic and "traditional" but also heavy and modern. No idea what genres they combine though.

Here & Now - Progressive space punk.

Hamster Theatre - RIO meets circus music and folk.

Mr Bungle often blend genres with wild abandon. For those curious as to how arabian techno music might sound then check out their song "Desert Search For Techno Allah".

hahah. Seriously, his rapping in "Honor Thy Father" sounds like Kid Rock, especially with that vocal effect it has at that part. Still, that was a pretty good song.

what about prog - reggae?? have anyone hear something that can be described as that?? There is a band here in Peru called Bareto, that mix reggae with some kind of traditional music and with jazzy elements, but i dont know if they can be called proggressive, it is good stuff though. Another peruvian band, Cimarrones, that plays progressive folk (afro peruvian folk) has couple reggae songs, but not with much prog elements. so... prog - reggae anyone??

Wilco have a strong prog ethic in the way they write and arrange their material. It's great stuff.
More like country-rock with prog sensibilities.
