Subject: Recommend me some 80s prog

I love both 70s and 80s, and I'm searching for some good 80s music with lot of synth riffs and catchy melodies, but with a clear prog vein (otherwise I would listen to AOR...). So far, two perfect examples would be Genesis' Duke, Rush's 80s era and Yes' 90125. Do you know some more that could fit the description? Thanks.

You should definitely check out Camel's Nude. It's a wonderful album.

Ok this is a long shot, but it is one of my favourite albums full stop. Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun. Loads of melody, haunting atmospheres and it is from 1987. Ticks most of the boxes in your query, - just don't expect 'prog rock'.

Based on you're examples I don't expect you'll have much interest in all the R.I.O/Avant/Zeuhl-albums I'd like to reccomend, so how about this electropop delight?

Eloy's "Planets" and "Colours" come to mind. They were a 70s prog band that made an especially smooth and graceful transition into the 80s and its technology. Lots of synthesizers, used very creatively and intelligently.

I'm not searching for albums 'only' released in the 80s, I'm talking about that typical synth/pop vein that albums like those I wrote above have. You know, catchy synth riffs, riverbs, echoes, strange athmospheres and so on, but played in an intelligent way.. BTW, thank you all, I'm gonna check all of this stuff.

David, that is a wonderful recommendation, which I endorse fully. An exceptional album.
The OP might also wish to try Gabriel's solo stuff, i.e. III, IV, So, and (top of the list) Passion.
The neo "scene" burst out in that decade, so go for Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, and Twelfth Night to start with.
There is a lot of good stuff in the '80's to explore, and our charts will help you a lot.

Thanks Steve.
I second those recs too. Gotta have a little 80s Marillion in your collection, that just goes without saying
So, I thought about your query Monsieur Ytse Jam, and you certainly have to check out Solaris:
Asia Minor also - especially with your affinity for melodic synths:
What about some ANyones Daughter?:
UUUUUHHHHH and I almost forgot Amenophis (This baby is a real humdinger that often gets overlooked for some reason):
Maybe some Supertramp with David Gilmour on guitar?:

If I remember anything else with bigger names I'll post here later, I'm dabbling to much in obscure stuff at the moment. Maybe Eardance would be up your alley if you're into King Crimson 80's sound.

i'm shocked. No one has yet suggested Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse of Reason? it ticks all the right boxes; huge digital production, synths, anthemic songs........get that!!!
I would also recommend Camel's The Single Factor, shorter songs but wonderfully streamlined 80s sound
The King Crimson trilogy is essential 80s prog listening too, esepciallyThree Of A Perfect Pair, sequencer prog!!

Hey Ytse, check out the two Canadian bands, Saga and FM. Two bands, one native of Toronto, the other native to Sarnia. I kind of grew up with them on Toronto, Canadian classic rock radio, with many of their commercially successful singles playing quite frequently. I'd post you some links, but they unfortunately haven't been working for lately. You've most likely heard of Saga, pretty big band within Canada and really big in Germany. Saga seem to fit your description the most though - Crossover with soaring, melodic guitar, tasteful synth leads, epic vocals, but all compacted into an 80's sounds. Check out the album World's Apart. FM's more atmsopheric and experiemntal; certainly not radio friendly like Saga. Check out the album Black Noise - a hidden gem in the world of Prog.

Some great suggestions in here. However, if this could help, neo prog in general does not answers my question, since I'm searching for a sort of 80s pop made with a bit of progness, not prog made with a bit of 80sness :D

Oh yeah, early, 80's Talk Talk as well. Later Talk Talk is drastically
different; popularly referred to as per-cursor Post-Rock. I prefer the
later albums, immensely, but the albums that Talk Talk are popularly
known for have that distinctive 80's production with synth pop leanings, but with a progressive mind set within their songwriting. Japan's another good suggestion - sort of similar to Talk Talk.

I second Japan, if you are looking for 80s pop with prog tendencies. Try Tin Drum. Maybe also some XTC? Skylarking has some proggy undertones imo.

IQ's most 80's sounding album is Nomzamo which I personally regard as one of their weakest but you might find it interesting

If you're looking for a combo of synth-pop and prog, the two bands that spring to mind are It Bites and Twelfth Night. For It Bites, the only album I have of theirs is their most recent, Map of the Past, but it is a great blend of those two styles. For Twelfth Night, check out either Fact and Fiction or Art and Illusion, both are great works in the field.

Oh sorry about that. Didn't see or read that, but I have some others you might dig.
1) The Cure. " Disintegration" 1989. This really may be of the best electronic pop/rock albums on the planet next to DUKE of course. Give this a spin. You won't be sorry and you'll have a much different opinion of The Cure all together. It is a classic.
Another good one is the entire BLADERUNNER soundtrack by VANGELIS. This album more strictly envolves the clever use of Syth fused with some jazz/rock on some songs of course, but more or less it is an electronic album with a strong progressive side. Really great for 1982
Anyway. Hope this helps

Some prog bands were very disappointing when they added a pop element to their sound. I feel that Genesis wasn't all bad when they made that major transition. Duke, Genesis(1983), and ABACAB are pretty decent albums I think. ABACAB is really pushing it for me with the amount of pop that is laced in the music.

Hey Zoviet, `Ra's got a very flat production, and all the drums are programmed, so they have a very cold and robotic sound - Like with Metromania, I always defended that because Eloy during that period are very science fiction sounding, so it just compliments that sound. Besides, look at the album sleeves from then, too - Sci-fi once again!

Ha ha true!! 80's were a funny time for fashion and I think a lot of 'pop' starts took it too far....80's hair!! 😜
As for music it's thee most brilliant era to me and by far my favourite. I own so much prog from this era it's crazy. There is so much!! How can anyone not love I.Q's THE WAKE. to me that is the best Neo prog 80's album. It's scary how brilliant it is. 👌I'd also be happy to recommend more other than my list shown above. ☺
