Subject: 2112 vs Moving Pictures

Although here on Prog Archives, the two most popular Rush albums are Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings, the two most popular Rush albums with the general public have been 2112 and Moving Pictures. So, which of these are your favorite? Personally, I think 2112 is overrated, but I absolutely love Moving Pictures.

Moving Pics by light years.....2112 is one of the weaker classic albums imo

I'm gonna go with 2112. I've always found Moving Pictures a bit overrated. I love Limelight and I have a fondness for Vital Signs no one else seems to share, but I am forever baffled at the popularity of Tom Sawyer.

Moving Pictures is overall much better, although it is hard to beat 2112 by itself.

I love first sides of both albums, but I just don't like MP second side while I like 2112 second side. So 2112. And I find Moving Pictures to be overrated.

As a teenager at the time, it was my most played song off that album.....I loved it. Hearing it live last year was a major treat.

The highest-rated album is in fact Moving Pictures with 4.40.

I prefer Moving Pictures, but I'm not a big Rush fan, so what do I know? Wink

Moving Pictures of course! 2112 suite is good, but the rest is average stuff.

2112 for me. Although the second side is rather weak. But the 2112 suite on the first side is enough for me to have the winner...

Although the 2112 suite is one of my favourite Rush songs and probably better than any song on Moving Pictures, the rest of the album isn't that good, the only song there i find pretty good is Passage to Bangkok, and the rest ranges from simply bad to okay. But on Moving Pictures most songs are great and the worst song is just good, so i vote for Moving Pictures.

Although I like the short songs on 2112, as a whole Moving Pictures is better.

2112 is a great album but it pales when compared to Moving Pictures, they simply became so much better musicians. The 2112 suite was a very inspired young effort and the B-side songs were also good, but you can't compare it with the mature perfection of Moving Pictures.

I prefer 2112 much more. Although I consider side 2 to be a little week, the 2112 suite on side 1 is one of my favorite Rush pieces.

Overall I have to pick Moving Pictures, because of decent B-side of 2112. But an album-titled epic is a way better than any song off MP and probably it's a best Rush song for me.

2112 has that start right....probably The best bit of music that rush ever did. It's just sublime...moving pictures is good but pales against the first of rush's best tracks.

From 2112 to Moving Pictures Rush was as good as any band ever. Those five LP's are all within a hair's breath of each other but I give the slight edge to 2112.

I'm not a big Rush fan, but I think both of these albums are so good. I have to give Moving Pictures the edge because by the time I got around to sitting down with it, I was very impressed. Such a great beast, front to back.

Moving Pictures edges 2112. As already mentiioned, these, and the albums in between, represent a classic period for the band.

A lot of times people complain about side two on 2112. However, for me the only weak songs on there are "lessons" and "twilight zone." I don't really think "tears" is that great either but I wouldn't call it weak. Even "twilight zone" isn't THAT bad. "Lessons" however, is probably one of Rush's weakest songs from the seventies.

^I think "I think I´m going bald" is weaker.

I've always thought Rush got better after 2112 so no contest for me. There's not one weak chord on Moving Pictures.

Stating an opinion on how Red tires me out means I'm replying because of Rush?? Lol

I was gonna say it's age-specific: I think of 2112 as a high school record.   But you're in your 50s, so . . .

MP, definitely.

Compared to most pre 1991 albums side two on 2112 is rather weak so it kind of loses points for that. However, even though the title track is one of the best things they have ever done it still doesn't put it ahead of MP which is a near perfect album.

I'm gonna go with 2112. I've always found Moving Pictures a bit overrated. 2112 is my favorite album for the suite and despite not being progressive I also love the shorter songs on the 2nd side.

Comparing a 9.9 to a perfect ten. Both are so great as to make making a distinction meaningless. Gun to my head, I say Moving Pictures, but there is a special kind of greatness in 2112 that appears nowhere else.

_Moving Pictures_

_2112_ was the very first album I ever purchased with my own money.  Still an awesome listen, but definitely a tale of two halves.

_Moving Pictures_ is nearly perfect and Rush at its pinnacle, (I'd include _Permanent Waves_).  MP's weakest tracks, "Witch Hunt" and "Vital Signs" are leaps and bounds better than "The Twilight Zone" or "Lessons".
