Do you consider it a good piece of poetry? How do you understand it? Just curious...

I like the piece as a whole but outside of its musical context I can't say it's anything but the ramblings of Morrison which, by today's standards, look like fantastic lyrics/poetry, but aren't really anything beyond that. Morrison was great, at times brilliant, definitely unique, but not everything he put down on paper was good. The Celebration is OK I would say.

I haven't heard the song, so I couldn't give an opinion as to whether the poem works lyrically; as poetry I found it rather amateurish. Many of the rhymes were quite generic and awkward, and I didn't get any sense of flow at all in the poem.
I haven't attempted to unpack the imagery, and as I don't know much about Morrison I doubt I'd be in a position to discern his intent (most likely a social commentary, from what I do know).

I thought this thread was going to be about the King Crimson album. Now I am angry because I don't like the Doors.

I thought so too. I can say that Lizard (King Crimson) may be my favorite Crimson album!! But they dished out so many masterpieces in the 70's, so I'm not sure.
But talking about the topic, I never really liked this Doors album. I stick mainly to their self-titled album, Strange Days, and L.A. Woman.
I think The Crystal Ship has better lyrics (maybe that's just because it's my FAVORITE Doors song), sorry!

I've only heard the live version on "Absolutely Live", though of course the "Not to Touch the Earth" segment is well known as a standalone piece. On the piece as a whole, I think it employs musical drama very well, with the "WAKE UP!" part always making me jump out of my seat in surprise. And the "Not to Touch the Earth" (run with me, run with me, etc) part is one of the best pieces the Doors ever did, both musically and lyrically. The rest of the suite is pretty forgettable though, and I don't really get much out of the lyrics.

Ehn, I've read worse. Though I have to ask why critics considers stuff like, say, the lyrics to Thick As A Brick to be pretentious, yet stuff like "Celebration Of The Lizard" get a free pass.

Celebration of the Lizard gets a free pass? I always thought critical consensus was that it's a bloated excess and one of the Doors' biggest missteps.
