I agree that you think that Pat Metheny is a better guitarist than Steve Howe.
Why Howe though? Who else do you think he's better than?

No chance. New age noodler (Matheny) vs. timeless, world-class, genre-defying artiste par excellence (Howe)

Metheny, a new age noodler? Right, I get it, you're referring to his "Zero Tolerance for Silence" album, aren't you?

I think that a lot of guitarists are "better than Howe", if you compare the complexity of the music that they played. But how do we know if Howe couldn't have played that stuff if he had wanted to? I think he's a good guitarist ... and the question "is X better than Y" can only be answered individually anyway.

At the risk of throwing this thread off-topic, I love Methany's
American Garage album, and any prog fans who love jazzy bands like
Hatfield and the North and traditional fusion should seek this album
out.

Measured by sheer diversity and eclecticism, nobody holds a candle to Howe. Please name names, if you think otherwise.

Actually I was thinking of Wichita Falls, which didn't really inspire me to explore his work further.
As for Howe, I will admit much of his solo work leaves much to be desired. But in a group environment, he's unbeatable. Heck he even managed to sneak some highly creative riffs into that corporate monstrosity known as Asia.

Lets take a look at this seriously
EVen though I still enjoy reading other people's comments on this
message board and sometimes putting my own opinion now and then. I'm
always a little repulsed by these threads where people try compare a
band to another band. We can try to compare bands in terms of technical
genius or creative genius or sheer innovativeness, but seriously what
is the point?
Take for instance, this thread. This is probably the most simplest way
to show how stupid we can be trying to prove something; whether it be
that our musical taste is better than the next man, or trying to be
some sort of music listening saviour to other avid music lovers.
Pat Metheny is better than Howe ...pff who cares?
Trust me I value yours and my opinion quite equally, but what is the
point of this bandering over which is better? If anything we should
just be enjoying the music that we love and let other people enjoy the
music they love. It's great that you voice your opinion from time to
time, but it's not like you're going to change the world to your tastes
as well. How bland would a world be if everyone had the same tastes?
I say again, there's no point to this thread. I'd like it to be deleted.

Well, the thing is Steve Howe is a classical guitarist. He also plays alot of really hard things to play in the backround when the keyboards are louder than him.

This is like comparing apples to oranges. Howe and Metheny are from two different worlds. How can you say one is better than the other. They are both technically proficient. It comes down to taste. Who's style do you like better.

Exactly so. BTW I think Pat Metheny's output is FAR BETTER than Howe's (though also it contains some irritating things) but they are really too different genres to be compared.

I agree, American Garage is a good point to start with Metheny (in fact that's where I started having heard the album played over the main speakers of a good record shop around 1980). However, to demonstrate that we trying to compare chalk and cheese in this thread, check out Metheny's Rarum Selected Recordings for the range of the man's playing facility.
What next: Segovia v Fripp?

I agree with kirklott Steve howe is of a much higher standard.

maybe he is but...so what? He hasn't contributed to classics like CTTE and GOD. Metheny is a first class noodler but after a while my ears tire of him.

Good answer Mike, but you have pointed my great problem with most Prog Metal fans, they believe in a simple equation:
Complexity = Greatness
Sorry, but this is absurd, skills have absolutely no relation with the quality of the musician. I doubt any living guitar player is in the level of Paco de Lucia, but I know a lot of posers from many genres that play more complex pieces of crap.

I personnally think that Pat Metheny and Steve Howe are SO different that it is pointless to discuss who is better. By the awy, if you want a decent jazz guitar player, not a muzak jazz player as Metheny, check out for Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. If you want a better contemporary jazz guitarist, John Scofield and John McLaughlin are far better than Metheny. Pat Metheny is very skilled, very talented as a player - but his music is not as good as it could be, he lacks feeling.
