Just curious to see what percentage of PA members like jamming from time to time.

I play drums/percussion.
I own a Fender Jazz Bass, but haven't picked it up and put time into learning it..

I'm not in a band though i wish i was. There aren't any good musicians that i know so i tend to just jam alone or just play at some sit-ins at my school. I'm the drummer for our school jazz band as well.

Used to try to play music, but found out it was distracting me from other goals that I wanted to accomplish. Might pick up playing later, but for now, I just enjoy listening to it.

I don't, i have tried, but have permanent problems in co-ordination/steadiness in general, so musical instruments are not for me. I can appreciate good playing to the skies, though!

No, could never get me anywhere near one. Tongue

It is just a hobby and I've been messing around with guitar and keyboards years.  Mostly improvisation.  Which reminds me, I need to take a break and re-string the old one.

Yep, I play keys, I'm the guy in the red shirt and black jacket.  Biggest stage I've ever played on.  It was in a country band but it was still a lot of fun.  My keys were so loud during the sound check that they echoed off of a bridge full of rush hour traffic that was a quarter mile away.

Wow, I was expecting a big percentage, but this is even higher than I imagined.  Great stuff.  I am wondering how many PA musos actually had the chance to play in a prog band.  I guess not that many.  Most would probably record alone, or play a different genre with some mates.  Maybe there should be a PA band, call it "The Purple Room" or something LOL

Well, I play sax, piano/keyboard, harmonica, recorder, violin and I'll be teaching myself to play guitar in a week or two. I also sing, but I'm terrible. I'm not so hot on the violin, either. I like trying to learn to play any instrument I can get my hands on. I sort of write my own songs and I sort of don't. I never plan on having a musical career. Playing music is a hobby of mine, nothing more (but in my mind, my hobbies are more important than almost anything).

I compose and play guitar and sing in a band.  There's a progressive element to our music, but I wouldn't call us a prog band.  My personal repertoire includes rock, jazz, and classical music.

I can also string together a few chords on the piano, and I'm a legitimate kazoo virtuoso Tongue

I used to play with a band of friends for many years in my native Spain, just for fun, we were too bad for attempting to play gigs, my main instrument was guitar but in some songs I played bass or keyboards, and I love drumming but I could never practice enough because I don't have a drum kit myself. I did also backing vocals, occasionally lead vocals too but my voice timbre and range are terrible.

We played covers, here some of our repertoire, we tried quite a few others but these were the ones we got to play the most and best

Rush - Xanadu
Rush - The Trees
Rush - Closer to the Heart
Rush - Limelight
Rush - La Villa Strangiato (well, sort of attempt....)
Rush - Freewill
Rush - The Spirit of Radio
Yes - Hold On
Yes - Changes
Pink Floyd - Time (I usually played the bass on this one)
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (I usually played the bass)
Asia - Without You (I played the keyboard)
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (I played the keyboard)
Marillion - Jigsaw
Camel - The Snow Goose (I played the keyboard)
Bowie - Space Oddity
Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Peter Gabriel - Family Snapshot (I played the keyboard)
Queen - Father to Son
Queen - Liar
Queen - Love of my Life (acoustic guitar version like in Live Killers)
Queen - White Queen
Queen - Now I'm Here
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

When I moved to Belgium 8 years ago the band had to break down and I didn't play since Cry

I play guitar and bass. I used to play in a straight rock band that had some prog, jazz influences when I was in High School; we actually were pretty good, but I left the band. I still write music, and hope to find some like-minded individuals to jam around with.

I played a lot more 20 years ago.
Stopped when I realized I'd never be a "god" no matter what. I lacked something. I guess it'd be called "talent." LOL
Won an acoustic signed by Alex Skolnick a couple years back and retrained myself a squirt. I still suck. LOL
Still have my old 60s Epiphone Zenith classical out in the shed, though. Poor girl.

Like The Doctor up there, I'm an amazing air drummer. :D

I play keyboard in amateur hard rock/cover band
We play Guns'n'Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirana, Offspring. No prog at all :-(

The band is guitar-centered, so my role is just cholding chords . I'm trying to arrange some guitar songs,
to make them more "colorful" . But I refused to play "punk" stuff (boring for me), so when they play punk, I'm just sitting behind the keyboard and thinking I wish i'd have a beer until the song is ended

It's never too late.  I finally got in a band when I was 35, and we're still playing nearly 8 years later.  My guitar playing is better now than it's ever been , thanks to the extra practice.

Learning to play technical stuff is supposed to be painful. Of course, one cannot become a proficient guitar player overnight. You have to start with something really simple, practice whatever techniques and play whatever music comes your way, but never force yourself to play what you don't like. From my experience, if I want to learn to play technical rock-n'-roll, I should be able to play the blues and folk, get a feel for those styles and get an idea of what they are about.

Again, most importantly: learning to play technical stuff is supposed to be painful.

OK, ... lately, it's the electric guitar that's been my weapon of choice. I also forgot to mention that I use VST plugins from time to time that simulate the sounds of the Mellotron, the Hammond, the grand piano, and such. There was a time when I used to play around with those.

I still gotta figure out Garage Band.

I know how to plug in (Apogee One) and play, but all that syncing multiple tracks, getting Easy Drummer to do what I want it to do, etc. still befuddles me. I guess I should try to find out if Sweetwater does seminars for beginners like me. I only live an hour+ drive away.

^logic is very powerful. I find recording midi from my guitar synth is especially useful. You can get all sorts of nice things happening. There are so many guitar amps etc. you can record a guitar line and then try out different setups afterwards!
