Subject: Recommendations from the "outer fringes" of RPI

PFM was the first RPI band I heard, followed closely by Banco, Il Balleto di Bronzo, and Area, and several others. This was all many years ago, and since then I assumed that most RPI groups followed in the general pattern of these groups. I am fairly limited in my knowledge of RPI, so I was very surprised when, during the past year, I came across the strange avant-folk-electronic hybrid of Franco Battiato, and the dark early goth of Jacula.
So I'm figuring there's got to be more out there, stuff I never even dreamed existed. Help me find some artists in the RPI genre who are really "out there" - I love the avant garde, and I love albums that take me by surprise. How weird does it get?

Sorry if this quote gets all scrambled up, it's the phone.
Just wanted to second this list, Jim did a great job.
The ones that I know of and think you would like are Pholas Dactylus, Cervello (you really need to get this one Steve. Sounds very much like an Italian version of Burnin Red Ivanhoe) and Rockys Filj. These are all albums that are out there, but in very charming ways.

Oh almost forgot about Art Fleury. They toured with Area back in the seventies before recording their debut in 80. I have this one, also reviewed it, and it is a complete mindf*ck. A combination of electronic RIO, field recordings, tape manipulations, radio segments, burial cortege styled organ and an abnormally strange way of gluing all these things together.
Gave it a three, but I am seriously considering a bump to 4. The word original doesn't even begin to describe this album

A very nice list. Very, very nice. I know Rocky's Filj, Three Monks, Nichelodeon, Yugen, SS, and PD (thanks to Guldyboy)...all are top notch. I have deep love for Yugen...especially their debut. 6 star album in my book.

Pierre, what's that album we spoke about a couple of months back, that was like a very rambling, avant-garde spoken word collage experimental piece? All I remember is, you said that you `like the train on the front cover', so you might be able to narrow it down from that description lol!

Seeing as you dig Battiato, then you should probably check out his 'other' albums. He was member of a band called Osage Tribe, an experimental electronic live act named Telaio Magnetico - plus he has worked together with another quirky Italian, Juri Camicasca, on a number of albums, in particular La Evoluzione.
Another Italian release you should lend an ear to is Yugen keys man's solo project called SKE. A fairly new release that flirts around with equal measures RIO, RPI, Canterbury and electronic. Beautiful album. It's mad, avant, melodic and soothing all at once.

I don't know so much of RPI either, except for a bit of the big 3, and the albums YS and Palepoli, which have already been mentioned. However, I also have an album called Inferno, by Metamorfosi, which is probably my favourite RPI albums from the ones I've heard, I just love it all, and the singer for me is just about as good as Francesco di Giancomo, also with a very powerful voice. And keyboards, lots of keyboards. I just love it.

I figure anything Jacula/Antonious Rex related is about as `outer fringe' of Italian prog as possible, so I present one of my favourite pieces, from the debut Jacula album:

They were actually the catalyst for my starting this thread. Between them and Franco Battiato (whom I discovered around this time last year), I realized there must be more "weird" music from Italy than I ever imagined. And I knew there'd be plenty of folks on this forum that could show me the way there.

To be honest, I'm still not sure I love their music, but I'm so intrigued by their oddness that I'm eager to listen and learn anyway. Good stuff is worth the time and effort to let it sink in.

To be honest, Steve, I'm talking a big game there! Jacula/Rex is not the sort of project that I listen to day in/day out! Just one I really immerse myself in every few months, and get so much out of the experience. Both the vintage albums and the newer releases all offer something fascinating, but listening to particulalrly those earlier albums can be draining and somewhat unhappy.
But have you heard the Antonius Rex album `Ralefun'? It's their one album that almost sounds like a `proper' RPI album, very melodic with lots of flute and acoustic guitar, for some reason reminds me a lot of PFM? Try these two tracks:
Antonius Rex - Ralefun 01 - Magic Sadness:
Antonius Rex - Ralefun 02 - Agonia per un Amore:
Warning, though, these tracks don't sound from the `outer fringes' of RPI unlike some of the other Jacula/Rex related stuff! Hope you like, guys, that's a very special album to me!

Underrated gem close to Stormy Six, mix of folk, prog, classical and jazz.
Combining the first LP and follow up EP from this peculiar and rather late in the game Italian folkloric art prog unit, the material from their eponymous debut co-mingles the magisterial prog neoclassicism of St. Just and Opus Avantra, the whimsical bippity-boop of early 70's French psych/proggers Komintern and the delicately askew acoustic configurations of Quebec's Conventum with sound effects and narrative interventions to mostly winning ends, while the work on "Specchi", their aborted second album (finally released as an EP) would take these preoccupations to an even more enjoyable set of conclusions, reformatting the suite like structures into song form bursts that tap a vein of perky eccentricity reminiscent of their fellow travellers on the early 80's Italian scene in La Pattona. MUTANT SOUNDS.

Some new(old) ones I just thought of:
Canzoniere del Lazio (Strange Area-like folk flavour with loads of manic avant sprees):
Black Engine (Modern avant band that I only recently came across with their album Ku Klux Klowns)
Le Groupe X (Kitschy experimental group with loads of weird toy synths)

Dave, I do check once in a while for it on Discogs.com, but not often enough.
As for buying vinyl without a decent turntable, I'm doing that these days. I've got a piece of junk USB/turntable combo that rips that albun at ONLY 128kb, and it comes out sounding all hollow and tinny. Garbage.
Sad thing is, I bought a Peter Frohmader (Nekropolis) LP called `Ritual' a week or two ago, and I haven't been able to hear it in it's full glory yet. I can't even buy a download of it :/
Still, it LOOKS awesome!

I have a couple of his albums, mainly the first Nekropolis and his collaboration with Richard Pinhas(Heldon) called Fossil Culture, and they're pretty dark I must say.

Me and my duck are attuned to one another - all I have to do is feed him daily with stale bread is all
That album though is really a long ways from most of the Italian fusion scene. To these ears, it sounds far more influenced by the more wild and untethered jazz rock of Miles, Mwandishi and Weather Report - than the more melodically fuelled acts such as Perigeo, Bella Band, Etna and Arti e Mestieri.

Dave, I've read several mentions that it's very Soft Machine influenced, but even on the few listens I've given, I think that is more of a lazy comparison and quite innacurate. Little moments sure, but not a massive influence.

If we're talking the free jazzy type thang The Softs went on to employ with 4,5 and 6 - then I guess the comparison is pretty apt. I still think it has more to do with the wilder side of the US fusion scene though.
