What would you fellow progressive music fans say about compiling a collection of the ProgArchives "Best of Progressive Rock" albums?
We could take a vote to decide what is the defining/definitive song of each sub-genre?
Any more ideas?
P.S. I am a camera. Camera camera.
------------- I am currently digging:
Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!
Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

When the capacity of a CD will exceed 1 terabyte we may start thinking of it.

I think that we could do it if we used some 4 seconds long samples from each release.

Seems to me that most proggers would not take kindly to 4 second samples. Its not in our DNA!!

How many CD's do we get? 2? 25?
But I agree with some of the others, this one would be a very tough and probably unencompassing assignment.

I remember a boxset released in the late 90's: it only focused on the bands of the 70's, there was 1 track for each band, and it was a 5 CD boxset... If you add the 80's bands, the 90's bands, the 2000's bands, etc...

If a compilation had one song from each subgenre, there'd only be room on a CD for four minutes each. A 3CD set would have room for twelve minutes each, but then which bands do you leave out?
If Dream Theater represented Progressive Metal, for example, then you have to omit Riverside, PoS, etc.
In the case of Symphonic - do you leave out Yes or Genesis? Or Camel or Focus or ELP or Renaissance?
It's not possible.
The only solution I can see is to make one such compilation per year, and have a rule that no band can appear on two successive compilations.

But what about rights and royalties? Seriously I'd find more interesting a compilation of "good but obscure" bands. A compilation including 21st Century Schizoid Man, Echoes, Firth Of Fifth, Lady Fantasy, Song Of Sheherazade, Tarkus...(well we are already above 80 minutes I think), would be a great package of music, but it's stuff that every prog fan has already and can rip on his own. Also I think a prog fan would not split any of those songs from their respective albums. I can't think of Lady Fantasy without Nimrodel.

^I could get behind a compilation of bands that would actually benefit from such a thing. I have actually bought albums based on songs I heard on label samplers. A progarchives "stuff you have never heard" sampler would be good for the artists, good for the listener, and good for the site..but probably a monumental undertaking and fairly thankless task.
I just noticed this;

I wanted to do it some time ago, but I thought the logistics would consume too much time for me. However, many people here have given just as much time to some of their polls, tournaments, etc as I expect it would be necessary for doing this. It would have to be made out of several CD's, and the way to divide such CD's would be the first thing to be decided. British prog would need to have more than one CD, I guess. Perhaps it would have to be something like British prog on the 70's, and perhaps more than one CD for it, then RPI (from the 70's, I guess). And then perhaps one for European prog on the 70's too (I guess it would be nice if such bands performed in their native languages). Then prog from America and / or Latin America (though this one may not work as only 70's). And another one for Asian, African, etc. Then Neo Prog, and Prog Metal, and well, many of you know the clasifications much better than me. Once the way the CD's wold be clasified, there would have to be polls to choose the most important bands from each one, and the most important albums, and the most important songs. In order to get the bands / Albums / songs that would go into the polls, there would have to be nomination rounds on the Top 10s and lists branch of the forum. Something like this would be my idea... about a year ago when I was thinking about it I had it clearer on my head, but now I kind of forgot all the details.

Not sure I want to hear Genesis or ELP or King Crimson again, on a compilation, and then hear Mr. Fripp not happy with the check he received for $0.34 American Pesos! I do not know how Archie Patterson used to do this, but he used to send out some samplers to the folks that spent money on the stuff he had ... and it was always interesting because there always was new stuff, and stuff that you never heard of before from Mars, Venus or Neptune. But I doubt that PA would be able to be that modern, or eventually able to find a happy medium and help the music get around. AND, add to the discussion, instead of otherwise. I kinda wish that "progressive" was less elitist and that it would help bring a lot of these other folks into the mix and fold in order to be able to cement our time, place and music in the annals of history of music. But, I do not think that the majority of folks that post here think that this is anything other than just "another hit", or just another "favorite song".

Who needs a compilation when you can stream several tracks on the PA mp3 player?

I would think splitting into subgenre sets would work the best imho.
