The Germans have thrown out a lot of talent, but I feel that the love for their guitarists is weak. So who's your favorite?
------------- I consider drone metal to be progressive...

Micheal Rother's one of my favourite musicians period. The stuff he did in Neu!, just wow. Simple, but just great.

Love the Krautrock, but in my younger days I played more air guitar to the mighty Schenker than any other guitarist.

Yeah, Karoli's great as well. Perfect for Can. I've always loved his nasally tone and minimalistic style of playing. So unique.

Bornemann is cool, but I like Jan Zehrfeld's work (Panzerballett) a lot more. So the vote goes for 'other', as JZ is not in the list.

A subject I know little about tbh . I voted Frank Bornemann but the only other I have heard is Edgar Froese who is very good. However from Melrose onwards TD mostly used a session guitarist which confuses the issue. Edgar is very good on Underwater Sunlight though especially Song Of The Whale Pt1.

I'm only familiar with 7 of these guitarists, but I can't help but cast my vote for Manuel Gottsching - for some reason he always reminds me of Steve Hillage..................
............sh*t, I forgot - Ax Genrich (Guru Guru) is one, rockin' motherf**ker of a guitarist.............

Nowadays... everything recorded and released is subject to digital manipulation. So the only honest answer here is to go back to the pre digital age and in this case no one compares to Micheal Schenker. He may be the greatest rock guitarist ever. I only wish he played in a band of equal talent. Same for Ritchie Blackmore. Uli Roth is a huge oversight here also. Right behind Schenker in my book.

Lots of love for Karrer - don't you worry about that Tom, although I prefer him on the violin. Nobody plays violin as strange and off base as he does If we're talking guitarists from ADll, then what about John Weinzierl? Love his playing, and to some extent he reminds me of Karoli. You know that cool psychedelic stratocaster sound from the late sixties. Weinzierl was however more rugged and heavy imo. I mean just have a listen to Yeti Paintpeeling stuff right there!

As to my vote.............hmmmm I'll have to think about it. In terms of pushing the instrument further than what had been tried before, pioneering skills, then the obvious choice would be Göttsching. Then again I love both Karoli and Weinzierl too - as well as Ax Genrich, Stefan Danielak aka Lupo, obscure frontman off of Silberbart(heaviest mother north of Sudan) Hajo Teschner and Connie Veit from Gila and Popol Vuh. I am forgetting so many here, which is why I'm waiting a bit with an actual vote.

Jabs was actually pretty good, more tasteful than plenty other 80s shredders. But if you are bigtime into Scorpions, you already know all about Schenker and Roth and 9 times out of 10, people are going to vote for either of those two over Jabs.

I, as you can imagine, voted for Helmut Koellen. A versatile musician he was, both great on six-string, and a Rick bass sound that just wouldn't quit! And not only in Triumvirat, but on his solo album and session work with the group Jail.
Thanks so much for including him in this poll.

That's it, I'm voting for Manuel as well!!!
Not only a magician with a guitar, but also quite the trailblazing electronic wizard.
What I really like about his guitar playing though, is the fact that he always manages to keep himself emerged in his 'solos' - I mean, when the man finds a sonic spree of joy, he will literally pursue it to the ends of the earth. The guy has an emotional stamina close to that of Barbra Cartland on amphetamine.

Thanks, I was trying to think of his name!! I always enjoyed his work on "Wolf City."
My vote went to Helmut Koellen, as he's the only one of the bunch I saw live, and I thought he was excellent on both bass guitar and 6 string guitar. Much like Greg Lake, he was amazingly talented on instruments and voice, and was a fine frontman.
Now, my personal favorite would be Michael Shenker, but I don't consider him a prog guitarist. I play a fair amount of UFO, it is fun & easy to play! His technique is scary, he frets with his index and middle fingers only, much like the jazz legend Django Reinhardt.

More than one! But Ax G. is probably the best of them all, and the one that should have stuck around and done more. His solo albums are an excursion to insanity and fun! Which might explain some of the fun stuff in Guru Guru better in those early days. But missing John Weinzierl from Amon Duul 2 in this poll is ridiculous and insane. Michael Karoli would be the 2nd one in my list, but John is by far the best of them all! But if I had to choose friends between Manuel, Michael and John, I would say all three or none! End of story! If we want to discuss music theory and the work within the composition, I would say that Karoli would likely get the most votes, since he is a part of the big German music machine at the Berlin Conservatory as were the other members of Can. However, for pure ROCK music, within the context of rock music, west coast inspired, I would say that John Weinzierl is my choice. I can't help listening to James Gurley in "Ball and Chain" with Janis Joplin, and right there not hear John, and then listen to Yeti, and not hear James Gurley ... and John did not stop there ... he kept going and he continued it until "Hijack" ... though I think that the sadness and frustration had already bit AD2 too much by then ... but that album is magnificent. Manuel, fits into a different category ... and I'm not sure that many folks would consider him as valuable and important as the other two, but I think that in the end, the work he did with Ash Ra Tempel and Ashra and by himself, and then with Klaus Schulze, is something that most guitarists do not have the guts to do and try! In the Cakewalk board I mentioned him and someone said that he was too mechanical and just chord oriented, but I did not feel that in "In Blue" with Klaus at all ... but maybe I don't know music as much ... I just love listening to it! But for sheer beauty in transitions ... Michael Karoli would be the best ... check out the transitions in "Bel Air" and then the 2 long cuts in "Soon Over Babbalooma", that went together on the LP. You can not "compose" the little touches and details ... that's just a "feel" ... during the play ... and that is a massive credit to their ability to improvise ... and above all ... the hardest thing to teach in improviation ... listen to those around you and reply with them and work with them, and in music this is hardest ... and most musicians FAIL the course at that moment!

Chris Karrer is mostly the Rhytyhm guitarist, if it can be called that in Amon Duul 2 ... and his strength is the violin, not the guitar ... and the best example is "Apocaliptyc Bore" ... that Scorpions made fun of with a similar piece and called it "Fly to the Rainbow" ... AD2 was saying goodbye to the drugs and all that, and Scorpions said ... screw that ... let's have a party! Play these back to back ... a very nice 15 minutes of music! And it really tells you about 2 generations and their work ... AD2 was more a part of history and the time .. .Scorpions was just a hit band! John Weinzierl is the name you want and he is the lead in Yeti, and all that I'm pretty sure. ... I could be incorrect here.
