Okay, I have a $25 Amazon gift card and I would like to buy some new CD's, because my 50 CD rack really looks wimpy when it's less than half full and I would like my collection to look impressive to my dorm-mates at college Big smile.  My question is - what should I get?  There's so much good stuff out there that I don't know where to start.  That's where you're suggestions come in!  Doesn't matter if it's music I already like, or stuff you just think I might.  I'm thinking of buying 1 rock, 1 classical, and one jazz CD, although that's not by any means set in stone.

I recently bought a number of Weather Report, Santana, and Stanley Clarke CD's for $4.99 each on Amazon if you are looking for a quantity purchase.

My recommendations:

For rock, go for something by Ponytail. Their latest (Do Whatever You Want All The Time) is their best.
For classical, you can probably get a good version Mussorgsky's Night on the Bare Mountain and Pictures at an Exhibition at a good price. The Stokowski versions are great.
I'm the wrong guy to ask about jazz, but maybe check out Jaga Jazzists' The Livingroom Hush (youtube "Animal Chin", if that doesn't convince you then nevermind xD)

Lately I've been on a big they Might be Giants kick, and if you haven't heard them yet, I'd definitely recommend getting one of their albums, like A User's Guide to TMBG, Severe Tire Damage, Flood, Join Us, or their s/t debut

For Jazz - i'd recommend Dave Holland's Extensions  http://www.amazon.com/ECM-Touchstones-Dave-Holland-Quartet/dp/B001BOX2XQ/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_9" rel="nofollow - http://www.amazon.com/ECM-Touchstones-Dave-Holland-Quartet/dp/B001BOX2XQ/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_9

The reviews will give a nice insight as well. It's incredibly cheap when taking your price limitations but heh - 3.99 for used with $4 shipping or new for the price of 6.15 with same shipping price. If i find more quality, cheap records on Amazon i'll be sure to post too.

:Edit!

Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots. Used for .89c plus shipping and handling.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002I4Q/sr=1-12/qid=1374869048/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1374869048&seller=&sr=1-12" rel="nofollow - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002I4Q/sr=1-12/qid=1374869048/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1374869048&seller=&sr=1-12

Twenty-five bucks ?   That's about enough for packaging and postage.

Seriously though, I'd check to see if the things I'm interested in have an "Also available used from these sellers" tag and see what I can get.   Most used CDs work fine, or aren't used at all but just reduced in price, so you can end up with two or three cool things.

^Yeah I just made my order and I'm paying twice as much for shipping as I am for the actual CDs! LOL

Anyway, thanks to those who suggested stuff, I got:

Weather Report - Heavy Weather (thanks Scott for the rec and Rob for the 5-star review that convinced me to buy it)

Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots (thanks Austin)

Florence + The Machine - Lungs

Vivaldi - The Four Seasons
