Pretty much by chance, I noticed that Bob has recently retired as a moderator.

We have been interacting (on and off) since 2005 and whilst our musical preferences were very different, I always admired his skills of diplomacy. Walking his tightrope well under testing circumstances, he was a great asset to PA.

Well, I am the opposite and my blunt and outspoken nature saw me being dumped as a Special Collaborator some years ago. Now as a "newbie" under a different name  I still make my contribution from the sidelines and Bob had been very supportive to that regardless of musical differences.

Frankly, I am surprised that I haven't been able to unearth a single thread thanking Bob for a nearly decade long service to PA.  If you care, put your hands together as a sign of appreciation and respect to a devoted, long-time and tireless worker as a farewell gesture.       .ClapClapClap

Over to you folks.

^ There's a Retired Admin thread in the Collab Zone, but nice of you to post.

I don't know anyone who doesn't like Bob.   That's quite an accomplishment.

I haven't been privy to the Collab Zone in years.
Would it be reasonable to ask that the masses to be informed, not just the insiders?

Bob had been a great asset, surely worth of respect beyond just the closed doors of the " elite" on PA?

Surely, that's not to difficult?

I might like to add that to his credit, Bob did contribute to Forums beyond being a moderator.
Only a select few of Collabs ever bother relating to "foot soldiers (the majority!) by acknowledging their existence and partaking in discussions - not from behind closed doors..

Bob was not acting out of ego, but of service.

Always hoped to meet him in the flesh given that we both live in the same town. Funny thing by best mate is also  a Uriah Heep fan so we really should get together and have a pint!

Oh yeahErmm Rightio..... the place where volunteers offer up their spare time for zero benefit to evaluate new music being proposed for the site, write bios, add albums, deal with trolls, erase bogus spammers, write reviews and generally just running the site? Excuse me?  The CZ is simply a collection of threads where volunteers give their free time to work on content addition, nothing more.  It's not some party.  There is no compensation for it.  Even those who get promo CDs set up those arrangements on their own....it is not provided by the PA.

Honestly Greg and Bora, if you think these PA folks are snobs and jerks, it just shows how little you know about the place.  They are a very nice bunch of guys and I miss them alot.

Dear. oh dear...
Making an observation is one thing, but naming people is not the least appropriate. Especially on a thread about Bob, a great diplomat.

Your defensive tone confirms the observations you find objectionable. Namely that Bob was a terrific moderator for ALL and not only for a select few in the Collab Zone. Yet, none of the "elite" bothered with a single note in this Forum until I started this thread. Nothing criminal about that, it only highlights the "them and us" approach you seem to deny.

BTW, in my previous incarnation I used to be a Special Collab and know very well what goes on behind the scenes concealed from the rest. So please, fair go!

Whatever....your "tribute" to Bob contained some chip on your shoulder..  That's your prerogative.  But when you make veiled generalizations about some very good people who don't deserve it, expect a little pushback.  Your implications that the collabs are egoists and "elites"-most of  whom won't engage others in the forum, are false.

I don't know - you boys...

This is just typical Bob - either surrounded by mayhem yet acting as if it were absolutely nothing to do with him or causing trouble even when he's not here.

I would like to say I'm glad to see the back of him, but he's none too pretty from that angle either, so I'll keep that thought to myself. His time as an Admin was an endless catalogue of blunders and bewilderment, wandering around the place with a bag of Werther's Originals and a mug of Horlicks, asking everyone and anyone if Mike Batt had been added yet and going on and on about his imaginary friend (Mix, Mox, Mex? something like that - I think it was probably a pooka). And as for his reviews - just don't get me started - they're so bloody long, it's like reading a version of War and Peace written by Marcel Proust on one of his less lucid days, whatever happened to the 100 word limit - there is only so many words I can read in one go before my eyes glaze over and I fall into a somnabulent slumber, and all that accuracy... is that really necessary? Why can't he just waffle meaninglessly for a paragraph about what he had for supper while listening to the album like everyone else? So, you listened to it all the way through - well done. And they're so old fashioned, archaic even, and he uses that thing that they used to have in the old days - you know, it was really popular, they used to beat it into you with sticks... what was it called... oh yeah, I remember - grammar, that's it.

And you Sir calling me a troll are no more than a typical example of bullies resented by many.
With over 3000 Prog albums under my belt you call me a troll? Shame on you!

Closing this thread on behalf of Bob? Sure, go ahead. You'd just further prove my observations about a handful of shocking w**kers excerting undue dominance. So much about "inferiority complex".

Your arrogance is likely to alienate more, people who would be looking for qualified input in place of dominance.

As mentioned earlier, I've only ever known of him as a reviewer, so I thought I'd highlight one of my faves - even if Bob doesn't seem to agree with meLOL How about this for a review?

3 stars Extra terrestrial's, Marylyn Monroe and a Transylvanian brain surgeon. but not a lemming in sight

I find Amon Duul II to be a frustrating band. Their "Live in London" album, which sold in significant quantities in the UK due to a budget price, indicated that they had originality and talent in no short measure. Having investigated further though, I find that their studio albums are alarmingly inconsistent, ranging from simplistic pop based songs to overlong, self indulgent improvisations. Outside Germany, this the band's third album bears the title "Dance of the lemmings" (I had to update the site to show this as it took me a while to find it under its German language name!).

The album's opening track "Syntelman's march of the roaring seventies" is a three part piece running to 16 minutes, and occupying the whole of the first side of this double LP. There are similarities with Hawkwind's "In search of space" from the same era, in the pounding rhythms and spacey sounds. The music varies from such psychedelic influences to acoustic, folk like phases which are reminiscent of albums such as Jethro Tull's "Thick as a brick". While the instrumental passages are frequent, they tend to reflect the overall tightness of the suite, with little of the improvisation which blighted the previous "Yeti".

Side two is occupied by the seven part "Restless skylight-Transistor-Child" which is notable for containing the most imaginative titles of the album. These include "A short stop at the Transylvanian brain surgery", "Dehypnotised toothpaste", and "Race from here to your ears". Needless to say the lyrics, which may be in English but are impenetrable nonetheless, bear no relation to the titles. According to John Weinzierl, the theme of the piece is an extra-terrestrial view of human life. Unusually, the track features sitar and choir type vocals working together, offering an ear catching counterpoint to the less structured section which follows. Improvised electric violin also makes an appearance, backed by a heavy electronic back beat. This suite is the most diverse of the four sides, and therefore the most demanding. The highlight is the "Race from here to your ears" section, a softer section with female vocal accompaniment and phasing. I do feel though that the "Live in London" version is much the superior. Strangely, the lyrics here mention "Syntelman", whose name is included in the tittle of the first suite.

There appears to be some confusion over whether the whole of the second album is the "Chamsin soundtrack", or just side three. The LP sleeve would appear to imply that sides three and four are both covered by this title. At the time of the album's release, the obscure film for which the music was intended had not been released, appearing in Germany a year later. The music did however win a German soundtrack award! The third side of the LP is occupied by the singularly titled "The Marylin Monroe- memorial- church" (complete with hyphens as shown), which runs to 18 minutes. This piece has more in common with the "Yeti" improvisations than the rest of the album. While it is mildly appealing, with floating early Pink Floyd like sounds, it is probably best regarded as soundtrack music and left at that.

Three separate tracks occupy side four. "Chewinggum telegram" probably contains the hardest rock on the album, the driving guitar once again being reminiscent of Hawkwind. "Stumbling over melted moonlight" continues very much in the same vein, with the closing "Toxological whispering" completing the trio of instrumentals in slightly slower guitar fusion style.

For me, this is easily the best of the Amon Duul 2 studio albums I have heard. OK, so it does ramble a bit at times, especially on side 3, but in general the music is focused and well performed. Incidentally, the album title also appears to bear no relation to anything on the album.

Just need to say....I didn't send this guy any PMs.

Also, sorry to everyone for engaging him in this thread.

No need for that Jim. You basically said what we all were thinkingSmile

BORA came here looking for something other than lauding Bob, that has become very clear by now.

Not what all were thinking. I was thinking how childish both sides of the argument were stealing the spotlight from the retiree. If Bora came here looking for something you gave it to him in spades.

I have to say that until yesterday I knew not of S Lang or his alter-ego Bora, whatever aggrieves him was afore my time and sod all to do with me or any of the current Admin Team. Whatever it was, given the 6+ year interval between then and now, it is something best forgotten. The Admin team members of those halcyon days have moved on, most of the SCs that lurked in the CZ all those moons ago have also found less mundane things to do in the real world, a few had to be shown the door with slightly more determination and some just faded away. The time for egos and ego-tripping is long since waned, the rest have just grown old or grown up or grown tired of the bickering of a few malcontents who will never be happy regardless of what we do. Pouring salt into old wounds stings, but it's better to grin and bear it than dwell in the past.

Sure, as one of the (then) three remaining Admins, it fell to me to chose between making a public announcement, a private one, or doing nothing when Bob retired. Since he is still with us, albeit on a well earned sabbatical, I decided to let him make the announcement if he so wished, but of course that is not his way - he is a quiet man who does things in his own quiet way - low key and without a fuss, that's our Bob.

Instead I created a Retired Admin Hall of Fame in the CZ for all the past Admins. We made no song-and-dance when Tony, Jody, Guigo, Iain, Alex, John and Angelo stepped down, we didn't make a big announcement when Maani, Peter, Bryan, Martin and Raffella retired and we'll make none now for Bob. If you respect those fine people then show it in whatever way you think fit, but somehow, making snide comments and picking fights isn't a fitting tribute to anyone.

I'll close this post by copying what I posted in the CZ for all to see:

I considered putting a small comment for each but unfortunately I don't know Bryan or Trotsky and have only had limited contact with Maani and Peter so decided against the idea. If people want to post their thoughts and comments on each then I think its a good idea.

It would be unfair of me to single-out any from the list, but that's not going to stop me:

The whole of the 2nd row are the Admins who (IMO) made the biggest impact - the PA and forum we have today is directly down to them - M@X and Rony created the framework and it was the leadership of the early Admins that put flesh on that framework but it was the policies, procedures and guidelines, the subgenres, teams and definitions of Bob, Tony, Guigo, Jody and Jim (who's still an Admin so not listed obviously) who brought it to life. They are also the five that made the Admins into a Team, it was a privilege to be asked to join them and an education working with them. For a bunch of ageing old men, (and I mean that in the nicest possible way Tongue), their knowledge, appreciation and passion for Progressive Rock in all its forms and all its eras is unequalled and unsurpassed. Seriously.

And I am going to further single-out Bob Macbeth, sorry, McBeath, not for his Admin skills (which are formidable - he produced so much of the policy around here it's too long to list), or for being the father-figure of the team and its de facto leader (though we never conferred that on him, or referred to him as such, nor did we ever defer to him, or do anything he suggested asked LOL), but for his reviews. I love Bob's reviews, the way they are written, how he conveys the music and his impressions of it, and for the controlled use of language he employs - you just know he listened, thought, listened again, understood and then thought some more before committing word to page - like a breath of fresh air that blows the dust of the platter prior to the stylus touching down gently on the groove - and then the music starts. Quality, depth and quantity - no one comes close - I'll take a handful of McBeath reviews over a truckload of 150 word first impressions or a bucketful of track-by-track chronologies any day of the week.

Thank you Bob. Clap

Still smarting from observing how things can come to life and take over.
My original (unedited) post is there for all to see.

I have little more to add, but in fairness to Finnforest, I confirm that he was NOT the abusive Collab.

Over and out.

Wrong avy for http://www.progarchives.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=20797" rel="nofollow - harmonium.ro , Dean. That was http://www.progarchives.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=10397" rel="nofollow - andu . Coincidentally also a Romanian...
And I don't remember http://www.progarchives.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=3717" rel="nofollow - Raff having such pic as an avatar either. Doesn't suit her at all (must be just your joke, is it?)...

Embarrassed The alex/andu avy was an in-joke, I guess I should have changed it when I posted outside the CZ - unfortunately both Alex and Raff have deleted their avatars and since Alex always used private photographs of himself I could not find a suitable replacement. But since the "cat is out of the bag" I can tell you that Henry Plainview is Ghandi2, 1967/ 1976 is Mandy, Knobby is Wallace and Bora is S Lang.

But rest-assured that image was one Raff, (then known as Ghost Rider) used back in 2007, whether it is appropriate or not it was an avy she used - I could have picked the BÖC "Fire of Unknown Origin" cover she used in later years, but didn't.

In a matter of days my name will be added to this list.

I have decided that due to changing circumstances in my professional life I will not be able to maintain an Admin/Moderator role in the PA in 2014. I'll still be here 19/7 posting irrelevant and irreverent comments and opinions on every conceivable subject, hijacking threads (such as this one) for my own nefarious ends, just not in an official capacity. This is my swan song, the big song-and-dance finale, on the day I'll simply change my status and quietly resume posting as if nothing has happened.

Angelo and I were promoted to the ranks of Admin in January 2008 and it seems neat and tidy that my tenure should come to an end as a whole number of  years, though that was never a plan as such. It's been fun (mostly) and I know that Jim, Andy, Keishiro and David can drive this Prog ship without my continued assistance and interference - they are a great team and the PA is in good hands. I'll miss the AZ and the fun we had there, but I'll miss none of the Admin tasks such as disciplining people, moderating threads, banning trolls, deleting spam and tidying up after ratings abusers and hackers.

In my first post in the AZ I stated: I'm working with the "if in doubt - ask" method rather than blundering about like a stoned Muppet wildly pressing buttons to see what happens. Alas that methodology didn't last, two years later when I attempted to delete a post in the Porcupine Tree Appreciation thread I watched in horror as the entire thread vanished into the aether, never to be seen again. Ouch That was not the only appearance of the 'blundering stoned Muppet' persona on this board but it's the only one I'll admit to in public. Wink

So, this is not goodbye, adieu, au revoir or even so long and thanks for the fish, but simply thanks for putting up with me as an Admin for the past six years, now I fully intend to grow old disgracefully. Evil Smile

Dean, I said my mushy sentimental stuff in the CZ thread, so you know my feelings.  But I'll just quickly say again that the site owes you a great gratitude for the many hours you have dedicated to its well being.  You will be missed in that capacity.  Thank you.

I am not able to post a new topic in the internal news so perhaps a collab could start one for Dean's retirement so that the general members can post their thanks to a job well done by Dean. His service deserves way more recognition than to be tacked on to a controversial thread which turned into petty bickering over a "supposed" class structure here at PA. Hopefully the thread would reflect Dean's fine service.

As a long time lurker I've always been impressed with how Easy Livin and Dean have kept the site going and the hard work they put in. So good luck to the both of you in whatever you are doing and thank you!

So like that recent Christmas Dr Who episode (minus the death and regeneration part) who is our newest "Admin/Moderator"???(there is probably a page somewhere on the site that tells you but I want to build up some suspense!)
