Subject: Subgenres Knockout Poll Pt 1
Date Posted: November 26 2013 at 08:11
Every week I shall start a new shorter version of this poll, removing whichever subgenre has been voted people's least favourite.

That's LEAST favourite, please try not to get it wrong.

Whichever gets the most votes will be knocked out, and we'll then move on.  One week at a time until eventually there'll be just two subgenres left battling it out in a few months time.

I love something from every sub, but if I were to wade through my entire collection, my guess is that Neo is the one who is least featured.

Strike that: Metal just as Gabe actuallyEmbarrassed

Symphonic will win no matter what.

I don't think crossover has enough star power really. Great bands but not enough big names imo.

^ I only know Mixtus Orbis thanks to your review but it rocked my world and I hope to expand eventuallyThumbs Up

There's only two subgenres that give me no enjoyment... Neo-prog and tech metal.  The rest have at least one awesome band that makes me drool when I don the headphones.

Thanks RyanThumbs Up

The sub is actually very eclectic. If you want a modern twist with lots of psych and electronic in the mix, then go for the Portuguese act Saturnia.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kd9Vt1kxlE" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kd9Vt1kxlE
Then there's the crazy ass American Krautrock distributor Wulf Zendik and his fellow star fighters. Insanely good kosmische musik from Texas of all places.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtDxms00lX8" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtDxms00lX8
And to counteract the brute force of Wulf, you may wanna check out Codona with the awesome lone dove cries of trumpet player Don Cherry.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hszMj-llN8" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hszMj-llN8

I voted for Tech/Extreme.  I can't think of any bands in that subgenre that I can stand for more than a couple of minutes. I'm with them in spirit, but my ears just can't handle that sound.
I do like some extreme-ish (to me, anyway) metal, but only low, slow stuff.

Regarding earlier discussion, I also love the eclectic Indo-Prog/ Raga Rock category, and have been sad in past polls seeing that so many just dismiss it/ don't bother with it. I rank it amongst my favourite categories even though it makes up quite a small portion of my collection.  Clivage has been a particular favourite, but there are plenty of albums to love, and every album I've heard from the category I really like.  Malachi's Holy Music is one of my particular favourites, but I don't think it would appeal to most here.

I voted for Neo Prog over Prog Metal (that said, every category in PA has some albums I've found to like).  My favourite album listed in the Neo Prog category is Marc Cecccotti's Sometimes Around Uranus (or sorry, Saturn, don't know why Uranus is on my mind).  My favourite band in Prog Metal is Diablo Swing Orchestra.   I've actually been getting into more metal recently.

I now deeply regret not voting for Tech/Extreme prog metal. It's not that I hate it as much as RIO Avant/Zeuhl (not even remotely possible) but I quite like prog metal like Riverside and am sorry to see it lose.

And I simply cannot understand the hatred for Neo-prog, which is actually just symphonic prog issued after the 70s. IQ, Marillion and Pendragon are 3 of my top 5 bands!

I can't make an informed vote since I haven't heard albums from all the subgenres, so I'm abstaining til later.

It sure is a shame to see prog metal and tech/extreme catching such flak. I'm definitely a fan and sympathizer of both of those subgenres and have a top 5 personal favorite band from each.

I voted tech/extreme metal.  Next will probably be metal, zeuhl,RIO, jazz, heavy in more or less that order
I hope prog folk will somehow sneak into the final 4, by virtue of being a genre that, while perhaps not very popular, is not often actively disliked, if that makes sense.  Another one I could see going far is crossover, since it's "everyone's" 3rd or 4th favourite subgenre Confused.

There's certain neo I really like, but the big names often leave me cold, so maybe that is part of the "hatred".  If people only know those big names, and perceive them as retread of symphonic of the 1970s, they might never explore the sub genre further, and discover so many excellent bands, who were influenced by the big names but are now once removed from the 70s, especially those from the continent.

I posit that the majority of people on this site would rather listen to a variety of interesting music, than things that all sound relatively similar / done before.

There, I managed not to use the words "boring" or "generic" LOL

Anyone who votes against Canterbury and Neo Prog will not get a Christmas card from me this year.

On the other side of the spectrum there is avant-prog that can be rather unoriginal too.

There is unoriginal music in every single genre of music, let alone sub-genre's of prog. Any who say otherwise could only be described as either stupid, or in need of a reality check.

Okay, my apologies. I voted for my most favorite. Really tired after my Thanksgiving meal. I'll get it right next time. Hopefully Symphonic Prog survives in the meantime.

At this point in the poll....one might save some time by getting rid of the 3 genres that are way out in front i.e. Tech/Extreme Prog Metal, Progressive Metal and Neo-prog .........now.....any of these are not gonna make it past the 3rd round.

Don't be so sure, those 26 Tech voters might go with something else next time.

Yeah, I'm predicting E/P metal and P/M rock to take some serious hits the next round.

As for T/E metal getting the boot the first round...what a surpriseLOL
I must be really hated here by some.Tongue

RIO shall win!

Neo-Prog shall be obliterated.

there was my take at trying to spark something.

I guess that nothing sparks my hate as much as apathy. I have absolute no interest in the slightest for neo-prog bands or most modern-day symphonic bands (I'm looking at you Flower Kings :O ) because it fails to move me in any way.

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal does need some appreciation for being able to produce such vile hatred from so many people on this site. I won't talk about the fact that I like many bands from there and feel many of them are doing extremely interesting things.

In that way I guess I can appreciate a "shocking" Shocked popular artist like Miley Cyrus more than a band like Spock's Beard. I hate her music so much... so goddamn much. She also has the same birthday as me :(((((

that was my two cents

please don't eat me

I'm pretty much the same as you Frippism. I'm rooting for RIO in an oblivious to the outside World sort of way.

Neo really doesn't connect with me at all, I've tried several times & I like a fair amount of modern Symph (echolyn, Discipline, Anglagard) but for some reason never neo.

I have a small amount of Tech/Extreme Metal and certainly enjoy what I have. I'm surprised they're taking such a beating as my assumption was that there were quite a few fans here. I guess they are even more polarizing than RIO/Zeuhl for the Symph/neo crowd.

I don't understand the enmity for Neo Prog either....it's basically symph prog and imo some of it is as good or better than the early symph prog bands from the 70's who were just as mellow at times.

I voted against tech extreme metal.....can't stand it but  do like some prog metal.

Exactly.  I figure the 18 that voted neo and the 15 that voted prog metal will probably do the same thing in round 2.  The big question is what is the second most hated subgenre of those 26 Tech voters LOL

I can only think of one Neo-Prog album that I don't absolutely hate. That's far less than the other sub-genres, so I guess It will have my vote.

I'm shocked to see, Tech/Extreme, one of my favorite genres taking such a beating.

Because I love melody and dramatic music it is pretty obvious what I voted against here. What we should not easily forget is that Neo Prog single handedly rescued Prog from the musical doldrums back in eighties / early nineties. I'm kind of surprised that melody seems to be going out the window relating to listeners these days - maybe it's a good thing that only around 60 or so members voted here, it kind of shows that lovers of seriously good music aren't bothered with voting on this topic.

I'm following the people who come closest to my age and kill Neo-Prog to death.
