Live 66-67/Tonight, Lets All Make Love In London - 3/5
Piper at the Gates of Dawn - 3/5 (beat meets psychedelic, terribly old dated but nice flavor)
A Saucerful of Secrets - 5/5 (THE BAND IN HIGHEST FORM)
More - 3/5 (rather boring but a nice discreet psych atmosphere)
Ummagumma - 4/5 (one of PF's best efforts, different moods, mystery and experimentations)

Atom Heart Mother - 2/5 (pop satisfaction)
Relics - 3/5
Meddle - 3.5/5
Obscured By Clouds - 3/5 (soft, boring songs with a few interesting instrumental moments)
Dark Side of the Moon - 2.5/5 (one of the most overrated albums of all time)
Wish You Were Here - 2.5/5 (accessible work with a few nice interludes)

Animals - 2/5 (the decline of the band, soft attack!!!!)
The Wall - 2/5 (mainstream commercial music, only a good mention for the solos)
A Collection of Great Dance Songs - ..........
The Final Cut - 1.5/5 (welcome to the machine of soft ballads)
Works - ........
A Momentary Lapse of Reason - 1.5/5 (weak!)
The Division Bell - 1/5 (melodic FM style with too gorgeous melodic, soft tunes)
PULSE - ........
Is There Anybody Out There? - 2 (a boring live with radiophonic tunes)
Echoes - 1.5/5 (weak!)

* the two PF's masterpieces

Piper At the Gates of Dawn(4 Stars) A must have for any Floyd enthusiast if they're going to understand their origins. Also, Syd was brilliant and way ahead of the mark. A true pioneer who unfortunately became mentally ill.

Saucerful of Secrets(3 Stars) I solid transitional lp from Syd to Gilmour. It has some wonderful peices like Jugband Blues, Corporal Clegg and Remember A Day but it was marred with the very dull See-Saw and the poor studio efforts of Saucerful.. and Set The Controls..(both of these songs would evolve and become much better listens on Uma Gumma)

More(2 Stars) Disapointing lp. The opening two tracks are excellent...Cirrus Minor and The Nile Song but then it disintegrates after that. It seems that they had some good ideas, but then bad production ruined them overall( such as Cymbaline) The second side was meant to be experimental, but it failed to really go anywhere, and thus isn't very interesting.

Uma Gumma(4 Stars) The ghost of Syd is finally excorcized on this great lp. The Live lp is a masterpiece. All 4 songs are brilliant. The Studio efforts of The Grand Vizier's Garden Party and Sysaphus bring down the quality of this lp. The Narrow Way is my favorite Gilmour tune of all time.

Atom Heart Mother(2 Stars) What a let down after Uma Gumma. While the long piece is an interesting listen, I certainly wouldn't call it a masterpiece. The rest of the lp just seems uninspired. Very boring tunes with the exception of Summer 68(a nice, quaint tune, but nothing special), and what the heck was up with Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast??!!( the worst Floyd tune..EVER!!)

Meddle(4 Stars) The 1st side is a mixture of good and mediocre, but the brilliant Echoes makes up for the ordinary 1st side and lifts this lp to 4 star status

Dark Side of The Moon(4 Stars) A true technical marvel for its time.

Wish You Were Here(4 Stars) Talking about an emotional lp. This one just drips with it. Poor Syd.

Animals(5 stars) The pinnacle of Floyd's career. Definitely their most progressive.

The Wall( 3 stars)  The beginning of Floyd's decline. Roger has clearly taken over the driver's seat and it isn't a good thing.

The Final Cut( 3 stars)   A very emotional lp but lacks the Pink Floyd sound.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell (2 stars)   A return to the old sound but it lacks the creativeness of earlier efforts and the cynicalness of Waters

Oh my goodness....how could I forget about one of my favs?

Obscured By clouds gets 4 stars. A good flowing lp and not a bad tune on it. Just a very solid effort that brings something a little different as far as The Pink Floyd Sound.

Dark Side of The Moon(4 Stars) A true technical marvel for its time

What Pink Floyd brought on this album which is so inovative?? I just want to understand why so many people love "Dark Side of the moon". Is there an other reason than the media ridiculous brainstorming?

What lp was more technically advanced than Dark Side in 73'. Perhaps Abbey Road.( but not in my opinion) Give Alan Parsons his due credit. There were more creative and innovative lps out there at the time, but this one is definitely the slickest. The production just makes it a joy to listen to.

Technically advanced, let's see, what do you think of this one? published in 1971:

Alpha Centauri is an crucial part of space rock history, and worth having in any form, glitches or not

Never heard it. Tangerine Dream does all instrumentals if I am not mistaken and while I enjoy an instrumental here and there I am not fond when an entire lp is one. It is just tastes.  Hey, at least we agree on Uma Gumma.

London 66/67 - 2/5 Only an little bonus in many ways, good to hear them early on but in my opinion too directionless.

Pipier - 3/5

Saucerful of Secrets - 2/5 Set the controls and title track strong, but too much filler in Syd's absence.

More - 3/5 I like it, a few weak songs but genereally a nice LP

Ummagumma - 4/5 Studio side a little odd but some strong points (ie Grantchester meadows/Narrow way) and the live side is brilliant!

Atom Heart mother - 4/5 AHM suite very good, I think the Floyd at their best in terms of those summery pastoral songs, ie Fat Old sun one of their most underrated tunes

Obscured by clouds - 3/5 Nice album at times a little boring though.

Meddle - 4/5 All round strong album, don't like pillow of winds though.

DSOTM - 5/5 cliche, i know, but brilliant.

WYWH - 4/5 SOYCD the greaest song ever for me, but welcome to the machine lets it down, I can't get round it.

Animals - 5/5 Dark, progressive, intereting I just love the sound of it.

The Wall - 5/5 My fav Floyd album it is quite commmercial but at the same time emotionally very charged which makes it so good.

TFC - 3/5 Too much waters now, nothing here that really gets me going, not awful though.

AMLOR - 2/5 I think the title sums it up.

Division Bell - 3/5 Better effort but its just not the same without Roger.

Incidentally who here counts the Floyd as their fav band, looking at a lot of the posts it comes across that everyone clearly likes them but for many they don't quite seem to be the ultimate in many peoples opinion. Am I right?

They used to be, but I have moved on. I still recognize their importance and while DSOTM and WYWH have suffered from over exposure, I still recognize their greatness.

Nowadays I rarely lisen to them...give me VdGG, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, IQ and Arena anyday over PF.

For me Pink Floyd is the "Ultimate No.1 Band". If I look at creativity, quality, live-act.

But my personal favourite band is ELP(musically more diverse/adventurous/explosive, more humour).

I like them, but for me there is no excitement in their music. Everything is at the same mid-pace tempo. They are the warm, comfortable blanket of prog rock (they tend to send me to sleep).

A masterpiece album of 70's space explorations! I love it.

And a pioneering album in the use of electronic equipment.

Well that gets me thinking actually, was once talking to a guy who was a session guitarist so fairly up on his music, and he reffered to the Floyd as a pop band. Which at first I passed off as him just getting hihgly subjective. But actually he has a point in some ways. In prog terms they are at no extremes, they instrumental ability is by no means the best ever. And their songs were always fairly accessible (well by the 70s anyway)

BUT nonetheless thats why I love them easy going, and their talent lies not in musical skill but the ability to create a whole work it sounds good as a whole not just down to one solo etc.

Live 66-67/Tonight, Lets All Make Love In London - ***

Piper at the Gates of Dawn - ****1/2 Great start for the band, Syd was what made Floyd and what imspired the rest of the band later on.

A Saucerful of Secrets - **** This is the band further exploring space rock, the filler here is good. Not as good as thier earlier album though.

More - ***1/2 Floyd exploring Simon and Garfunkle looking for a sound, although they do find it, many of the songs here could have been much longer and that would make this a 4 star.

Ummagumma - ***** Thats right, my favorite. The live album is perfect. Studio is the spaciest album by them and most prog the band ever was and shows who did what in thier albums. Live album is a 5 but the studio is a 4. The studio can be complete crap for all I care, the Live part is just so good.

Atom Heart Mother - ****1/2 Band at its most avant garde. Very prog and the band is finding a direction.

Relics - **** Best compilation with some nice Syd goodies.

Meddle - ***** Great album, no filler here and Echoes is my favorite epic by far.

Obscured By Clouds - **** Great transitional album. This is Darkside without the hype.

Dark Side of the Moon - ***** We all know the album, its quintesential Floyd. The music is all the good music ideas taken from Piper to Meddle and combined with some new technology, sound effects and put into one monumetual album.

Wish You Were Here - ***** Great follow up and even more prog than Darkside.

Animals - ***** Thier most prog album after Darkside. Great concept/lyrics/music.

The Wall - ****1/2 Best Concept, perfect lyrics, Playing isn't at it's best and Rick didn't do to much here but it still is highly entertaining and emotional.
A Collection of Great Dance Songs - **

The Final Cut - **** Emotional, and the best album after the wall.
Works - **

A Momentary Lapse of Reason - *** No direction and only 2 members working with 20 session players, does have its moments though.

The Division Bell - ***1/2
PULSE - ***

Is There Anybody Out There? - **** The wall with the best songs extended and the solos are extended to. Best of all though, RICK plays.

Echoes - *** To much editing on the great songs.

Top 3- Ummagumma, Animals, Meddle

I only rated the ones that I have.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn: 5/5 Amasterpiece of prog in its beginning and cutting edge psychedelia, with awesome songwriting and instrumentation.

Saucerful of Secrets: 4/5 Cool instrumentation, overall great album. Shows transitions from Barrett and continues to develop the classic floyd formula, but still has a 'barrett' sound.

Ummagumma: 3/5 Has weak and good parts, but dosn't sound enough like a band effort.

Atom Heart Mother: 5/5 The tile track is epic and breathtaking, and the rest is awesome even Alans Breakfast. Really creative and misunderstood piece.

Meddle: 4/5 Echoes is awesome, and all the other tracks are decent.

Darkside of the Moon: 5/5 Perfect engineering, the best thing about it is how the songs seem to flow together perfectly.

Wish You Were Here: 4/5 Most emotional and progressive effort, with only a few tiny weak moments (Shine on You Crazy Diamond takes to long at the beggining).

Animals: 5/5 Awesome concept album, shows the band at there progressive peak.

The Wall: 1/5 The band suddenly falls from its progressive peak to this mainstream concept album. It would better if it was made by The Who or a normal band, but it just dosn't sound like classic Floydian prog.

I'd definately say they're my favorite band (although King Crimson is a close second).

Live 66-67/Tonight, Lets All Make Love In London - (never heard it)
Piper at the Gates of Dawn - 9/10 (a good look at what they looked like in the early days)
A Saucerful of Secrets - 10/10 (easily my favorite, few weak points, although the title track would become much better on Ummagumma)
More - 4/10 (a few good tracks here, but overall fairly weak)
Ummagumma - 10/10 (even without the live disc this would be my second favorite, although I don't like the live version of Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun)
Atom Heart Mother - 9.5/10 (nice to hear them with an orchestra. the rest of the tracks are great too)
Relics - (never heard it)
Meddle - 7.5/10 (decent work, saved mostly by Echoes and One of These Days)
Obscured By Clouds - 8.5/10 (like DSOTM, but better)
Dark Side of the Moon - 6.5/10 (good album, but nowhere near their best)
Wish You Were Here - 8/10 (very good, no weak tracks)
Animals - 9.7/10 (PF at their progressive peak)
The Wall - 5/10 (decent, but a bit boring for the most part. Contains many great track, but not that great of an album)
A Collection of Great Dance Songs - 4/10 (good tracklist for a greatest hits album at the time, but not much here. the new version of Money is horrible)
The Final Cut - 9/10 (an amazing album, extremely underrated)
Works - 6/10 (very interesting tracklist for a best of, it's nice to see Ummagumma getting some space here)
A Momentary Lapse of Reason - 2/10 (easily their worst. only good part is Sorrow, which is such an amazing track)
Delicate Sound of Thunder - 3/10 (a bad live recording to support a bad studio album)
The Division Bell - 6/10 (better than AMLOR by a long shot. some great songs, but a lot of weak material too)
PULSE - 3/10 (the Gilmour-era songs are done very well. Astronomy Domine is not as good here as on the Take it Back single. Most of the pre-AMLOR tracks are absolutely horrible, with the exception of On The Run, Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell, and Wish You Were Here)
Is There Anybody Out There? - 8/10
Echoes - 6/10 (A much more complete greatest hits album than any of it's predicessors, but why nothing from More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, or Obscured by Clouds?)

*top three

5 stars for the most admirable pioneers of early and nowadays prog:

piper at the gates of dawn-2/5-conceptual,experimental, but one of their first endeavours for reaching the prog side!!!

saurceful of secrets-3/5-first attempt on early prog...succesful!!!

more-4/5-more than any other before 1969

ummagumma-1.5/5-almost a complete failure...luckily they ceased that psychedelic-nowhere!!!

atom heart mother-2.5/5-on the same line...things will be perished!!!hopefully...

meddle-4.5/5-and they almost done it!!!-extended compositions and ample by their scenic outlook!!!

DSOTM-5/5-that truely apogee culminating in 1975!!!"New Musical Express"...

wish you were here-*/5-better than ever!!!

animals-*/5-that's how we like it!!!

the wall-5/5-ingenous creation,an outcome of an re-assembled colaboration...

the final cut-1.5/5-the result of reluctant colaboration..!!!

a momentary lapse of reason-2.5/5-acceptable solo work of gilmour's prodigious solo years...

the division bell-3.5/5-besides his dull creation,a quite ingenous way of using the guitar!!!

Pulse-4/5-reminded me of what pink floyd meant!!!

Dark Side Of The Moon - Not really a prog album, more a nice pop/rock album with clever production effects(Now very dated).6/10

Wish You Were Here - beautifully constructed album that is very satisfying 9/10

Animals -Prog masterpeice.10/10

The Wall - 8/10 I still love this album.Very dark and emotional.Hard to listen to in its entirety, but still good.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn - 5/5- one of the best psych albums ever
A Saucerful of Secrets - 4/5- great album, but they'd go onto even better things
More - 2/5- 'Cirrus Minor' and 'The Nile Song'  are the only good ones here
Ummagumma - 3.5/5- the live album is top class, the studio stuff less so
Atom Heart Mother - 3.5/5- this one grows on me a lot- I really like 'If' and 'Fat Old Sun'
Relics - 3/5- patchy. they should have put every early single on rather than LP tracks.
Meddle - 4.5/5- almost a masterpiece: 'Echoes' is absolutely perfect
Obscured By Clouds - 4/5- a vastly unsung album- some great stuff on it
Dark Side of the Moon - 5/5- it could hardly get less than 5; it is a masterpiece
Wish You Were Here - 5/5- perhaps their finest album of all; pure class
Animals - 5/5- another classic
The Wall - 4/5- it's a great achievement but not a fave of mine
A Collection of Great Dance Songs - 1/5- utterly pointless
The Final Cut - 3.5/5- not as bad as its reputation suggests; to me it's almost as good as 'The Wall'
Works - 2/5- CD I had was poor and not of much use bar 'Embryo'
A Momentary Lapse of Reason - 2/5- not terrible but they've done far better
The Division Bell - 3.5/5- a great improvement; some gems here
PULSE - 3/5- classy live album
Is There Anybody Out There? - 3/5- not something I like hugely but if you like 'The Wall' this'll do nicely
Echoes - 3.5/5- decent intro but I can't imagine anyone just buying this and not buying anything else

Addendum: 'The First Three Singles '66-'67'- 3.5/5- pop psych gems yet all of the early, post Barrett singles should also have been here, plus 'Scream Thy Last Scream' and 'Vegetable Man' were once proposed as singles, so they could have gained an official release...

Green are my 3 favorites. I used to SWEAR by lots of the pre-Dark Side stuff, but recently I've come around to the majority, because I really feel Dark Side, Wish and Animals are the band at their musical, atmospheric, production, songwriting, conceptual peak.

Syd Barret is overrated, and 'The Division Bell' is actually pretty good.

BUT...my favorite Pink Floyd document is EASILY the godly 'Live At Pompeii'...the band's performance chemistry at its pinnacle. Those versions of their best pre-Dark Side songs is phenomenal. A mandatory DVD and something they really need to release on CD officially.

Oooh, I want to play! Unfortunately I don't have the entire studio back catalogue but for what it's worth, here is how I would rate the records I do have:

Meddle - 8/10 (Can I please resize Echoes to half of its length...? And while I am at it, get rid of Seamus? Having said that, One of These Days is truly great.)

Obscured by Clouds- 8½/10 (An unassuming, charming record, with songs that flow well together. It's not all that ambitious perhaps but I still get more out of it than Meddle.)

Dark Side of the Moon- 9½/10 (I know it's hard to believe but I was a whopping 32 years of age before I heard this record for the first time -or even anything from it! I was of course aware of its existence and its significance in music history but it just never crossed my path in my childhood or my teens...not even on the radio, at least not to the extenct that I would have any memories or recollections of the music. And the funny thing is, I always had the impression that DSOTM was a 'strange' album, with 'difficult' music, probably because of the theme of the concept and the way people in the media talked about it. Well, when I finally heard it last year, I was slightly disappointed; it wasn't strange at all! lol Still, I quickly grew to love it and I will only reduce half a point due to the disruption of the flow of the record with Money and the overlong sequence of On the Run. Other than that, perfect.)

Wish You Were Here- 10/10 (This record was my introduction to the band, apart from Another Brick in the Wall part II, which I heard from time to time as a teenager. It was instant love and that love has not diminished one bit in these two years that I have had the pleasure to own it. The first time I listened to WYWH, I sat put on my sofa, as if frozen. I *knew* that I had bought something truly special. It really was something of a milestone in my relation and approach to music in general.)

Animals- 9+/10 (Its bleakeness is what makes it such a powerful and engaging listening experience. By now Pink Floyd had become masters at putting across a certain mood and run with it. It took me awhile to get into this record but now I enjoy it from start to finish...well, apart for some overly streched bits in Dogs. )

The Wall- 9/10 (Right, another PF blockbuster which I had not heard until...two months ago! In some respects I actually count myself lucky as I have never had the possibility to play it to death, lol. I certainly played it a lot in the first three weeks since getting it and found it instantly accessible. Incidentally, the day after I bought it, I witnessed the reunion of the band at Live 8. Absolutely perfect timing. The Wall is a great blend of pure songs and musical ideas that help to hold the piece together. Ach, if only I had had this album in my teens, I would certainly have loved it even then... But as I said, at least I will never grow tired of it now. As an adult one learns to "pace" one's listening habits a bit better! )

The Division Bell- 7/10 (So I bought it because I wanted to get a taste for the more recent Floyd stuff... And even though I can see how it tries to emulate the structure of WYWH in some ways and go back to that classic PF sound without really pulling it off, I can still enjoy bits of it here and there. Let's just say that it is one the (many) records I am prone to put on whenever my ears need a rest from pure, stellar prog. Ideal background music, really )

Piper at the Gates of Dawn-3.5 stars -has some great songs such as astronomy domine, intersteller overdrive, and bike, songs like pow r toc h drag it down.

A Saucerful of Secrets-3 stars -similar to piper with good songs like let there be more light, a saucerful of secrets, and jugband blues but rick wright's tunes dont do much for me.

More-3.5 - their first completely non syd album.  Some great moments but some klunkers also.

Ummagumma-2 - hmm what a mixed bag.  Sysyphus is great but dont even get me started on Grand viziers and several small furry ect.

Atom Heart Mother- 4 - a huge step from their previous output.  The title track stands among their best tunes.  With uneven moments on the second side it isnt as good as it could have been.

Meddle-4.5 - Such a damn good album.  Crisp sound and a big step from Atom Heart Mother.  Echoes is so floating yet dense at the same time.

Obscured by Clouds- 4 - While not as good as Meddle, Obscured by Clouds has some very good instrumentals.  This is their bluesy and folky album.

Dark Side of the Moon-5 - This is my second favorite floyd album.  Crystal clear with great guitar and flow.  A very cohesive and concise album.

Wish You Were Here-5 - Their true masterpiece with the theme absence.  Their best song is on this album.

Animals-4 - This is good but can drag in some parts.  However Gilmour truely shines in this album.

The Wall-4 - This is the beginning of the end for the Great Pink Floyd.  This is a great album though with good sound quality and good songs.  I am afraid there is some filler in one though.

The Final Cut - 2.5 - This is not a good album and is pretty embarressing in some parts.  Everything is a piano ballad so if you hear one song you hear them all.  Only three songs I wouldn't call filler.

A Momentary Lapse - 1 - urp There is few moments on this album.

The Division Bell -2.5 - good improvement over their previous output.  But the good moments are too few and thinly spread.

However, they don't make up for the rest of the album that just plainly sucks.

Why is The Final Cut so disliked?

I find it to be the last fully listenable Floyd album (AMLOR and Division Bell not really holding their own, though the concept for the latter was fairly interesting).

Agreed its not exactly a progressive masterpiece, but the album has its finer moments, and if nothing else it has feel. I find songs like Paranoid Eyes and Poles Apart (The Final Cut and The Fletcher Memorial too for that matter) really emotional.

Above all, I find that The Final Cut flows very well as an album. The sonic detail in and arund the songs, and the way the bits link together make for a whole much greater than the sum of its parts. I don't think I'd rate any single track on the album as a four-star tune, but taken together, it's a **** album.
