This era of KC took some getting used to for me, but I'm glad I persevered. I like these three albums fairly equally. Discipline seems to get the most love, but just recently I'm leaning towards Three of a perfect Pair.
So, what's everyone's favourite of the perfect trio?

I clicked on Beat because my fav 80s KC' song, Requiem, was released on that album.

Discipline, but Beat and 3 of a Perfect Pair are better albums than they are usually given credit for.

All are brilliant, but Discipline just about wins it for being more listenable, although the other 2 are more refined in what they were trying to do, and VERY underrated on this website Love all the album covers too, plus the names for that matter

Three of a perfect pair for me. I only like side one of Discipline; I find side two repetitive and boring. I really like Beat as well.

All this albums are not so good IMO. Crimson was a good band in 70's, and their posterior records are empty.

I'm afraid I haven't got the 80's Crimson albums. However, I do have a pair of live albums from the double trio, and it seems they played most of the best song from the 80's there, plus I also have one live album from the 80's line-up, which includes the whole Discipline. From this I'm sure the songs I liked better from that album were the same covered on the double trio live albums, and that I like the double trio versions much better, so I don't really feel very interested in getting that particular album, which actually I don't find as great as their 70's albums. About the other 2 albums, I'm not sure how much I might be missing, but I have the feeling that there might be a couple more songs that I might happen to like there.

I think the studio albums form a wonderful three of a perfect pair, but would still 'stick' to their live recordings from that time more. If recommending one record, would pick "Absent Lovers" 2CD. Much yet to dig out from the post-releases of DGMLive! catalogue also.

^^ Yeah, I've seen several performances from that era and they had a really good and original live sound. The TOAPP concert in Japoan is particulalrly good.

Discipline. Considering an interview I read many many years ago, I think Fripp agrees with me.

Thinking about it, each of these 3 albums have sensational tracks on them, it is difficult to pick 'the best' of them, but the first is the 'holotype' for the next 2, so it's understandable that 'Discipline' comes in at 1st placement.

Has to be Discipline. So many great moments, such a great album. Such a brave album too.

I agree. I know Fripp and used to meet with him backstage after shows in that era, and he was PUMPED by the early formation of that band!
Reasons included:
a) their energy: they were fresh, young, and full of creative energy.
b) instrumentation: Fripp and Belew were just opening the door to the sonic possibilities of the Roland synth guitar! I told Bob that I thought it was a "strong instrument" and he looked at me me, nodded, smiled and said "Indeed!"
c) personnel: Belew brought some of the "new wave" energy that Fripp channeled through his "Exposure" and "League of Crafty Guitarists" experiments, and Levin took things to a whole new level with the Chapman stick.
d) chemistry: Fripp had played with all of the bandmates on earlier projects except, I believe, for Adrian. These were seasoned vets who knew exactly what they wanted to do.
Fripp told me that his touring band (their first tour) was the "best rock band in the industry right now," and I had to agree.
BTW, I haven't seen Bob in years, but we exchange emails. I think he's enjoying his retirement and married life!

Yeah, Discipline beats the other two. I'm a little prejudiced because I saw them on that tour. I think they veered off a little too far into commercialism with Beat and to noise with Three.

It's really cool knowing someone like Fripp. However, unless he has changed his mind, he doesn't seem to be planning to remain in retirement in the near future, given the news a few months ago about his reforming King Crimson.

I could ask him, but I have a policy of not asking musicians at that level about their upcoming plans. It puts them at a discomfort level. I prefer to react to what they are doing after they have launched their projects & are more willing to open up about the subject.
Bob's a very private person as you probably know, he gets scared by "vampiric" fans. Best to give him a lot of room and let him do nearly all of the talking. His sense of humor is like a razor! (insert "Sky Saw" guitar lick)
