Do you guys think Mastodon should be considered Eclectic Prog Metal? I mean they have glimpses of Math Rock, Psychedelic, Prog Rock, Prog Metal, Sludge, Punk, Heavy Metal, etc? I don't believe anyone has made this thread yet, so what do you think? Should move Mastodon out of Extreme/Tech Prog Metal dept?

Is eclectic prog metal even a thing here? Doesn't really matter either way, they are what you want them to be

I think they fit fine, it's hard to pin down what they are, which is why extreme metal works, that's kind of a wide description. They started as a sludge band but have gotten better at incorporating tons of different elements to their music. harsh vocals, heavy music, extreme, progressive, sludgy goodness

Doesn't matter. Plus there is no such thing as eclectic prog metal on PA, and we are trying our very best not to make anymore subs. They are listed on PA in a fitting sub. No sub is 'better' than the other, and while Mastodon do have a nice mix of differentiating styles going on, they are still metal at the heart of almost everything they do.
A sub is just a place to file acts, so we can get on with it.
Also: who cares? The music is great either way. I could see this being an issue if they were located in folk, but they're not.

^ You know... they have some slightly folk like songs... The Sparrow, Joseph Merrick, well maybe that's it actually. Still, maybe eclectic folk progressive metal needs to be a sub, no slacking!

^^ It's songs like those that make me rethink where they are at now

Yeah but they're greatly outnumbered by songs like Blasteroid, Capillarian Crest and Iron Tusk to name a few. And even they're more straight up hard rock stuff, Quintessence, Black Tongue, Birchman, is more extreme metal than it is folk haha.

Mastodon is progressive metal at the heart of it, but not the way Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, or Queensryche are prog metal, but the way Opeth and Gojira are prog metal, which is extreme prog metal, they're good where they're at. But the fact that you have to take two before you put a classification on them is a testament to what a great band they really are.

Prog metal suits best for Mastodon. No need to complicate it.

Prog metal only with an accent on the metal.

I say you can classify them however you think is best. But for PA purposes, leave em alone.

According to our definitions, see http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=44" rel="nofollow - E/P , http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=19" rel="nofollow - PM , http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=43" rel="nofollow - T/E , I think they fit the extreme sub better

I don't feel they are experimental or eclectic enough to qualify as E/P. As for PM or T/E, I think they way they sound today they could fit in the PM bucket, but they are a better fit as T/E given their roots.

They clearly fit best within Extinct Big Nosed With Bloody Fab Beards Mammoth Metal, although their last opus could easily have fitted within Eclectic Whiskery Progressive Tusky Metal.
Rumour has it that their next one might well have a track influenced by Egg, so people may well have to consider moving them into Dinosaur Canterbury Soundlike Siberian Tundra Prog, but we will, of course, need to wait for a proper eval.
By gum, I love these important discussions

More and more, I feel like Mastodon is leaving the metal genre altogether. It's almost progressive ROCK now, but I really do like their albums a lot.

Their latest album is very melodic, but the songs flow together so well. There are so many groups on PA that can fit into many genres.
