| It seems like Steven Wilson was in a kind of King Crimson mood when he did Grace for Drowning, and ended up with an album that sounds to me like a continuation of Islands. So, which of this two albums do you like better? |

I love Islands but it is not an album that gets a regular spin on my playlist unlike GFD .

Tough call. Islands is near the bottom of my KC list. I was a 'non-believer' at one point but Deadwing changed my mind. I was a lot less convinced by earlier albums because I perceived a lack of emotion in his music. It was all too controlled and perhaps even derivative yet Wilson was putting himself out there as the second coming. I suppose I admire him because he works hard at what he does and also he has at various times pulled together some great musicians especially for Raven. Someone described him as a musical director which is probably the best way to look at it . He has never and never will be a Fripp, Hackett or a Howe in terms of talent but he makes the best of the situation.

I own all of the Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson solo albums and I keep them around thinking that one day the music will click, but, alas, it's been 10 years and I still have yet to be moved by anything he's done. It's not that I don't admire what he's doing or even understand the music. I just don't emotionally or intellectually connect with the music in any way. Like I've said before, the music just leaves me cold. As long as you plenty to listen then its not a particular concern. There is a lot of music around that is way more fun than Wilson's. I guess you probably are not madly keen on Anathema and Amplifier and other such bands either but I could be wrong. There is a snobbery connected to enjoying music that taps into a general negativity about life and Wilson always chooses dismal stuff to write about.

I wonder how did you end up with all of Wilson's and PT's discography if you haven't found just about anything to enjoy from it. I would have given up at the second album, if those I got were suposed to be among the better ones. |
