KILLERS

The two albums recorded by Iron Maiden with Paul Di'Anno as singer are sadly overlooked gems.Dickinson's charisma brough to the band a more experimental and captivating approach,but this earliest Maiden material holds something that got lost later on,a certain punk-styled wilderness and dirty,heavy simplicity.What makes Killers a stunning album is the simple fact that it's filled with excellent Heavy Metal tunes,from start to end.The guitar work on the album is of rare quality,and everything is complemented by Di'Anno's honest and furious roarings.

The Ides Of March is an incredible overture,simple as it is.Already we're presented with excellent guitar soloing,contrasting the beatuyfull melody of the main theme.It all seamlessly fades into Warchild,one of the songs that best showcase Di'Anno's wild vocal style.Everything happens extremely fast.Follows Murders In The Rue Morgue,one of my favourite Iron Maiden songs ever.There's nothing too special about it,but this one reflects all of the band's best qualities in therms of riffing and catchy melodies.After the impressive rush of these first three tracks,the music is developed into a proper album:it never goes too far beyond traditional Brittish Heavy Metal,but everything sounds just great,unlikely to go repetitive at any given time.Genghis Khan is a remarkable instrumental where again the spotlight is the guitar workout of both Dave Murray and Adrian Smith.The title track is simply antoher piece of excellent Metal,out of so many in this album.

To be honest,the sheer heavy brilliance of the first half looses a bit of it's stride on side 2,but there's harfly a bad track in the whole record.It's also worth pointing out that this is an extremely well recorded(and produced)album.All in all,this is a simpler and straighter Iron Maiden,but the sincerity of these first efforts always make me think twice before saying that the golden era of the band,fronted by an enthusiastic Bruce Dickinson,produced their best material.An excellent album of honest Heavy Metal.
