3 stars 'Ænema' - Tool (Single)

This definately ranks up there as being one of Tool's most memorable and rocking songs. I will not say I'm a fan of this band, but I have explored their discography in relative depth and this song was one of the few that really stuck out to me.

Unlike alot of Tool songs, which either throw in alot of noisy ambience or take a while to get going, this song is very well written as a rock song. The center of the song is (as some might say it should be) the melody and hooks, and there are plenty to speak of here. Some great galloping drum/bass grooves provide a great backing for Maynard sounding angry and disillusioned as ever. While alot of Tool's lyrics are a bit too cryptic and pseudo-spiritual for my liking, this song actually strikes a note with the message it's trying to convey; the decadence and superficiality of modern society.

While there is alot of filler on the album this track originates from, 'Ænema' really gives a spark and helps me appreciate a band that I otherwise can't get into very much.
